For 50 years, this song has been my spiritual meditation. A higher power using Jesse's tender voice and subtle accompaniment to calm a world of turbulence. One of those special recordings that can't be explained any other way.

And The Catholic Church used the song at Church in 70s,the part of the song that stood out the most was the lead and 12 string ,interesting about Valenti bio,bet he made some cash on that one.

When this song came out, I remember listening to it with my new friend, I was about ten, a few days later I heard that he had drowned in the wissahickon creek, I never saw or heard about him after that! As the years have gone by I have often heard this song, and have never not prayed for my friend.. it's my connection to him , and God! Peace...

Someone should find the isolated tracks of this tune, if there are any, and analyze them. Maybe Rick Beato can include it on his "What Makes This Song Great?" series.

So for the people who don't know Chet Powers also known as Dino Valenti was a folk singer in NYC Greenich village in the early 60's. He later went on to play in Quicksilver Messenger Service in San Francisco for a few years off and on during the early 70's and into the 80's.

I had the pleasure of hearing these guys live in about 1969 outdoors in a field in Vermont, a kind of mini Woodstock before Woodstock. I believe Jesse live on the Big Island and grows coffee today. Another fabulous song they did was "Darkness Darkness".

Been listening to this song for 50 years, an all time favorite that I turn it up whenever I hear it on the radio. What I love most is the guitars and now I understand thanks to this interview that what I’ve been hearing is a 12 string electric and I’m like OH, OF COURSE !. Thank you Jesse for telling us the history, I love it even more now.

When I was a kid I saw the Youngbloods and the James Gang in a very large barn warehouse outside of Portland Oregon. That barn was also used for regional pro wrestling and all the wrestling ropes and canvas were simply stashed on the side of the stage. Incredible concert and of course Youngbloods played Get Together. Joe Walsh with James gang was also awesome. We were all blown away!

This song was channeled from the ethers. Jesse reaches and brings out its heavenly essence as did Chet God bless his soul. It expresses humanity’s consciousness evolution. “Cmon people”...

That song and LSD entered my life at the same time. That's when the worm turned.

Written by Chet Powers a.k.a. Dino Vallenti. The song was actually a Kingston Trio type hootenanny song that was originally performed in folk circles. Vallenti had been a member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and had served some time in prison in the sixties for some type of drug related charges.

Prior to the Youngbloods, Jessie was a "folk singer". He would ride his motorcycle from NYC to Cambridge Ma for his shows at Club 47. His first Album, Soul of A City Boy had an amazing song, 4 in the morning that we LOVED!

When I heard the words: "You hold the key to love and fear", I did a back flip in eternity while drifting off to sleep. I had to recall the words carefully so I could identify the song later.

I was surprised I just heard the J Airplane version .It had a different ,( and most important lyric) They sang "when the WIND that brought us here ". When "When the ONE that brought us here returns for us at last" is far more meaningful... I was an atheist at the time.... That line pierced me, opened me further cracked my shell ( I was 12). The sound of 67-68. was an apt soundtrack for me and the school girls I grew up with, transforming into adolescence.

Saw the Youngbloods live (circa 1971) and the band did not include it in their two sets and encore. Probably tired of it? I don't think they performed it live much during those years.

The return of Christ is alluded to in the 2nd verse:
"Some may come and some may go
    We must surely pass
When the One that left us here
    Returns for us at last"

Jesse Colin Young is one of the greatestest singer-songwriters in American history with a dozen of the best songs ever writen and youngbloods deserve to be up there with the Beach Boys and the Byrds and Love and Doors etc.You just probably only heard one song on the radio and made that comment .You need to listen to the early albums like Elephant Mountain(1969)and Rock Festival(1970) etc,not the later solo stuff which can be pretty bland soundibg.
