    I added the project file in the description for those who have trouble with the node setup.
    If your foam does not appear, check the dynamic paint output settings. Press the little "Plus"-signs and make sure the names of the vertex colors are the same as the dynamic paint output setting ones.

    Hints n tips for some newbies ( like me ) - have to stress an awesome tutorial but some of us like me not quite there yet
    * Download the Blender file linked below - there is a big difference between Math node and MixRGB used here - you will be scratching your head if you used the wrong one from video ( like I did )
    * Minor point on Blender file provided - it reference as image which doesn't exist which causes purple/pink color - go into node editor, select world and delete the image/texture node
    * The attribute Node is really powerful - it seems to be able to take maps from very diverse sources. In this case it is taking foam generated from ocean modifier + dp_wetmap vertex colours generated from dynamic paint just by name! If confused by where things come from in the displacement group of nodes in tutorial they are
    ** foam' is part of the ocean modifier ( Properties->Modifiers->Ocean->Generate Foam->Foam Data Layer Name).
    ** The wet map is exposed as as a set of vertex color maps under Properties->Object data->Vertex Colors->dp_wetmap. The wetmap is generated by Properties->Physics->dynamic paint->canvas->Dynamic Paint output.
    have to stress there is a HUGE amount in this video. If you are a newbie like me spend a bit of time
    * Playing with dynamic paint on a simple plane and a ball going backwards and forth
    * Break apart the foam and water textures to see what they look like alone
    * Play around with using Black and white image maps as source into FAC of mix Shader nodes

    If the effect of sphere displacement it's not visible, it could be the resolution of the ocean modifier. Setting resolution at 17 like in the video, all is working.

    Just tried this with 2.76 and (surprise) no foam. At least until I looked closer and there was foam, it was just the same colour as the ocean. It's a lighting/brightness issue. Problem can be solved fairly easily by adding an Emission Shader and another Add Shader node in the Foam group.

    quick question, when I got to the part where you first see the ocean moving, I did all the options the same as in the video, but when I start the animation (Alt a) nothing happens. (note: this might be because I did something wrong with the foam data layer name, which I don't know if it's automatically generated)

    This is a wonderful tutorial, just what I wanted to learn. I have a little tweak to implement but I'm not sure how. I want a camera coming from top directly into the ocean and produce a splash in the water. But what I don't want is to have any object shown in the camera, it is just like a camera hit the ocean and a splash is produced. Any idea how this can be achieved ? thanks

  • @MarkHewis
    @MarkHewis 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is awesome - quick question I cannot get my head around the feeding of the 'dp_wetmap' attribute node into the 'RGBMix->Add' is this some shortcut for color input of RGBMix which means it automatically knows if fed a name of a vertex color map it knows what to do with it?
    On another note this is by far the most elegant and CPU friendly way I have seen of movement through water - way better than trying to do it in fluid dynamics nice one! Wish I could think the way you do.

    • @BlindIllusionist
      @BlindIllusionist  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yes I think it works because the wetmap is a black/white map.

    • @MarkHewis
      @MarkHewis 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for that. Got confused between 'attribute' node which feeds a map into following nodes and 'value' node which just passes a value into it. Now I have head around the displacement node group in your demo how long did it take you to figure out the correct combo? A tutorial on that would be awesome! Rather than showing end product show how you got there.

    Some very good tips and some pretty good looking result. But what bugs me a bit are the missing splashes of water when the object enters the ocean and also when it gets draged across the surface. How would you go about adding those?

    • @BlindIllusionist
      @BlindIllusionist  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lohiau1 You could try particle systems or an explode modifier

    • @Joh00226
      @Joh00226 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Blind Illusionist better solution would be to just add a cointainer filled with water inches under the ocean modifier , so when the ball goes under it reacts with the container and the water splashes.

    • @BlindIllusionist

      Yes, a good idea

    • @BlindIllusionist

      I don't think it's possible. You can export the dynamic paint as an image sequence and import it into a game engine, maybe you can use this data for a real time displacement. But simply exporting this setup as it is into a game engine is not possible. At least not that I know.

    Love your tutorial and I got a halfway decent Seaview Sub submerging video with it, but I have tried it several ways and I just cannot get the deformation of the plane surface that you achieve?? Can you tell me if there is a setting I am missing or what setting exactly controls this deformation by the ball? Thank you for your time. Oh, I should have mentioned that I am trying now to use your process to make a desert sand plane and have the Jupiter 2 slide through the dunes. Not sure yet is it's possible or not but it looks like it might be working, but here the deformation will be very important.

    • @BlindIllusionist
      @BlindIllusionist  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the deformation not working at all? Or is it just not detailed enough? Try setting up the resolution of the ocean modifier for a better result. Also check, if the ocean is set as canvas and the ball is set as brush in the dynamic paint options.

    • @4KProductionsFilms
      @4KProductionsFilms 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your reply. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I have the resolution set to 20 (should it be higher?) and I have double checked the canvas and brush settings (one thing that may be my problem; I am not using the ball I am using a Submarine model on the surface but it is set to brush) I get plenty of foam that looks great but no deformation behind the sub like your ball does. Edit: I increased the Ocean resolution to 27 and I do get some deformation now! So I think you solved my problem. Thanks.

    Hi! I am making a animation that is 700-1500 frames long, (not done yet so dont know the specific lenght) and it has a huge ocean. I have some troubles with the foam. The ocean has one object, that isn't moving, but the foam is just increasing. I checked the materials are right, names are righ.

    • @BlindIllusionist
      @BlindIllusionist  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you have an ocean setup and in the ocean is one object that is static and the foam should appear around it, right? But instead the foam is increasing and starting to cover the entire ocean? Hm that's strange, I would need to check your file to be able to see what could be the problem.

    • @gimmeadsense1347
      @gimmeadsense1347 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can send the .blend file, just tell me where to send it. Of course if you don't want it it's okay.
      If something is unclear: (just in case, if I didn't gave enough information)
      The ocean has one "floating" objekt (it doesn't move, in real life it's so big that it doesn't really react to waves, so it should generate the foam only when the ocean's waves hit it, or something like that), but the foam is just increasing more and more from that objekt. I use latest version of the blender (2.79). The ocean is animated as shown in the video.
      Sorry to bother you with these long comments, hope you have a great day.

      Blind Illusionist I downloaded your tutorial, then in render is same problem i don`t know what i have to do to fix this problem

      Click the plus signs. Then check the vertex color output. There will probably one that is called dp_wetmap.001. Delete this one so you only have the two maps with the correct names

      Blind Illusionist In picture is foam, but motion of ball doesn`t form a foam.

      I had the same problem. Just do the next step: the Dynamic paint brush, as instructed up to 2:39 and you'll see the wake. The video may have been generated separately from the voice over so they verbal instructions don't take place at the same time.

      It's not a very descriptive tutorial. He makes a lot of assumptions about the skill level of the viewer. I would just move on to another tut

      Hey SeiRy Guy, Yes you are right, it is going a bit fast and is more suitable for advanced users.
      Hey Bro Team, did you check if the object is set to brush and the ocean is set to canvas?

    • @grandpasy2883
      @grandpasy2883 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah man, it's not a bad tutorial at all but you didn't cover all bases. Like you forgot to tell the viewer that you are using cycles render and you used a few shortcut keys that you forgot to mention if i remember correctly, no big deal :)

    Is there a way of texturing the water and foam in Blender Internal?

    • @BlindIllusionist
      @BlindIllusionist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know but I don't think so.

    • @ctmpodcast6901
      @ctmpodcast6901 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could, with the dynamic paint you could set that to be a 'foam' texture, which would essentially be a glass bsdf with lots of Fresnel.

    Can you make the ocean open like the red sea?

    • @BlindIllusionist
      @BlindIllusionist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Marcio MGJ You mean you want to have it bigger with no visible ending? That's absolutely possible, just use some arrays. But it will slow down your computer really hard...

    • @Mendes631
      @Mendes631 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I´m you the movies like 10 commitments. Recently, in Brasil, a Soap Opera hired a Special Effects company from US, Stargate, and they made the moses opening the sea. and It was not Blender , but Blender has its power. Maybe better than other computer. I´l like to know how it would work done in Blender...i saw a version of 2 box of water that are separate and mix in one...

      @EdwardPanzer 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      well do thanks a lot!. and could you give me a tip on doing more "splashes" i have a ship crashing threw the water and the water isn't really splashing. any help?

    • @BlindIllusionist
      @BlindIllusionist  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Captain Storm -Dj.S7orm- Well...unfortunatelly, this isn't a real water simulation, it just looks like it. So it won't splash, no matter how fast the ship is hitting. But you can add a particle system to the position your ship is hitting your water.

      0:43 i found out that I had to change the Geometry setting in the ocean modifier tab from "generate" to "displace" which "displace[s] existing geometry according to the simulation" which is what we want.
