Jac gets his first shoes...hind shoes only. Many of Stacy Westfall's reiners are barefoot in the front. They have shoes in the hind because it makes it a lot easier for them to slide. Training the slide as well as performing it 3-4 times in a pattern makes shoes the friendliest thing you can do for a reining horse; it allows for less friction sliding which makes the stop easier on the horses joints, body, etc.
2:10-Stacy describes how she uses training cycles with her horses, much like a runner would train and she describes how to work something, like having a cold, into that cycle.

Stacy is just starting to teach Jac how to slide. Watch the ratio of stops vs loping around on Jac. Jac shows a desire to stop but he doesn't know how to hold his hind feet without catching his toe and letting his hoof roll over. He will eventually, with practice, learn how to ski along on his hind sliding shoes.
This is the story of two-year-old Jacs Electric Whiz (Jac), the last baby out of Whizards Baby Doll, better known as "Roxy". Roxy touched the hearts of horse lovers around the world when she and Stacy Westfall made history with their bareback and bridleless freestyle reining ride. The loss of Roxy in 2012 has left a void in the equine community. Although nobody can replace her, Roxy's spirit lives on, not only in our hearts, but in Jac as well.
Join us as we follow Jac through weekly videos documenting his training journey from his first session to his first show and more. It is a journey filled with questions, breakthroughs, setbacks and accomplishments... and everything in between.

Why do you bump him the whole time? That seems like a lot of extra work. (Also seems to force you to sacrifice your seat since you're concentrated on leg cues?) He's a gorgeous sorrel by the way! :)

Amber Rose I was working on getting him to follow my legs. If you ever saw his mother and the Live Like You Were Dyin freestyle, it is the same way I trained her. This short video will help you understand some, th-cam.com/video/sRJGtOBtVzU/w-d-xo.html

I don`t know why she is bumping him with her legs so much, is she stabbing with those spurs? I thought spurs are meant to roll on the horses belly?

Birgit Schenk No, I am not stabbing him with the spurs but I am bumping him with my leg. Maybe this short video will help you understand, th-cam.com/video/sRJGtOBtVzU/w-d-xo.html.
