    The entire reason I picked up Splatoon 1 was because it lacked voice chat. My experience with voice chat with randoms has not been good, typical boys don't know how to talk to a girl situation. But Splatoon made me unafraid to pick up and play an online game with strangers. I had a similar experience with a random player in Splatoon 1.
      At first the ranked mode's sorting system wasn't too picky, so you would sometimes get paired with people who were higher or lower rank than you.
      *I was A-* (that's "A minus") at the time and got put in a Rainmaker match with *an A+ and 2 S ranks on my team,* and another *2 S ranks and 2 S+ ranks on the enemy side.*
      I had an Octo brush. During the last minute I ran ahead of my teammates who were slowly pushing forward and I started inking the podium-thingy and the ground around it so the guy with the Rainmaker behind me would have more room to maneuver when he caught up. (Don't remember if I stuck a Squid Beakon in a corner somewhere nearby, but that sounds like something I would do at the time too).
      An enemy splats me- he starts squidbagging- *_the Rainmaker swims right past him through the trail I left-_* the guy stops squidbagging and turns around, but *_it's too late and we get a knockout_* before I can even respawn! ^_^
      I wonder what it feels like to _ultimately lose_ a game _you had a clear advantage in_ because _you got cocky_ about taking out *_the objectively lowest-level player in the match!_* X^D

I'm pretty prone to getting squidbagged just because a lot of my matches end up having me kill the same few people feeding to me over and over, so they get *really* excited when they finally get me, I guess. Obviously in a competitive setting it's best to not squidbag but in solo queue I do it sparingly because I find it funny when they squidbag me back I'm like "ayyy there we go!" When that happens.

      @zarico6157 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Same here! For me i honestly don’t mind getting squidbagged at all, as long as it feels genuine. Lots of backlining and locking people out or killing pushes can be frustrating for opposing players, so when one of em “finally” takes me out to make room for a push, and celebrates with a lil squidbagging, it honestly makes me feel kinda honoured! It reminds me that im playing with actual people in real time ykno, people that are celebrating getting a splat on the annoying hydra.
      Conversely if youre someone who squidbags without the context of it being celebratory, you suck. its not that serious, but its a shitty thing to do.

Eventually I got a splat on them and I got so hyped I started squidbagging like crazy. They got like 5 more splats on me before I got one on them. Immediate squidbagging. They killed me and squid bagged me every single time. I looked back on the replay to literally be the only person they squid bagged. Again. I had not played with them because it was my first match logging on after about a week. I was also just trying out motion controls for the first time in a match. I stopped playing PvP and went back to Salmon Run. It literally made me feel like crap.
      So I wasn’t cracked. I wasn’t beating them. Had not played with them and was beating them. They just decided to be a jerk for no reason what so ever and decided to target me for whatever reason.

    One story in which squid bagging in this context was a positive experience: I made good friends with the 8 random people I played with one day in turf war once and we kept squidbagging each other after every splat and that's the only time I've been squidbagged after being splatted as a sign of kinship instead of disrespect lol we were all just being incredibly silly and I really cherish having those replays. No voice chat and yet we all carried the same impeccably chaotic energy and were on exactly the same page. All 8 of us swapped to the dab emote and squid partied in the lobby between games, squidbagging or playing leap frog. My favorite moment is when one of them killed me with the undercover brella and then proceeded to throw themselves off the map. That was the single best session of turf war I ever played.
    Also on your point about voice chat; as someone who is neurodivergent and afab, I've always been turned off by shooters. One too many R slurs and sexist comments will make you never want to play if you also deal with that shit irl. And my heart was racing on my first ever online game in Splatoon because I genuinely worried so much about what others would think if I played badly. Yet the moment that game was over, I was in love with this game. The lack of voice chat being a feature of the game rather than a downside is an understatement and genuinely make this game such a treat for someone who may have never known they could enjoy a shooter before

    I'm a mod for a Twitch streamer who primarily streams Splatoon. Any time someone new joins and maybe squidbags, my streamer friend shuts it down immediately. No squidbags, no spinning, none of that, even if the person you taunt doesn't mind. Because even if that one person is okay with it, allowing that sort of taunting at all encourages others to do it to more people, including some who may not be okay with it. I think it's great that he discourages it entirely, and our little community is rather friendly and tight-knit, likely at least in part due not allowing squidbags or taunts.

I think one of the best things someone told me when I was scrimming another team was to always be respectful, no matter how "bad" you think that team is. You treat every team with the same amount of respect no matter how new to seasoned they may be. They're competitive players too, and driving them off the scene does nothing but hurt the community. This also includes other signs of disrespect, such as purposefully trolling another team with a meme comp in what is supposed to be a serious scrim, having one or more of your teammates throw because "you can still win without them", etc. You show respect, no matter what. Also, don't purposefully scrim with teams significantly below your level, unless your trying to see how they play so you can help them

    I agree that the lack of voice chat in public matches is a feature, but when i want to play with friends it sucks, i can't hear both the game and the discord chat from the same headset, at least i don't know how to do it from my headset, even if there is a method, i usualy play on docked mode, with a bluetooth usb to my headset, using some wierd cable to conect to both my phone and the switch is just a whole other layer of inconvenience, in fact untill now i can't talk with then with headset, and without headset it's horrible becouse there are a lot of cars driving near my house and they're annoying without the noise canceling headset, making everytime i want to play with voice chat with friends a whole new issue that i usaly think it's not worthit and then i end up playing alone.

    In my opinion, seabagging (the term I prefer for Octoling inclusivity) should be reserved exclusively for 3 scenarios:
    - sea parties (especially if someone disconnects on either team in a competitive setting)
    - end of salmon run
    - splatoon 3: in queue when celebrating a win with your teammates (not private battles)

    Whenever i get squidbagged, i do it back even though I know i shouldn't. I'll even admit, once i went into turf war after going on a losing streak in clam blitz and going from A rank back to B. So i was already upset and i got squidbagged by some dude. I made it my mission to go after him and only him, and he eventually ended up DCing. It felt good to get some revenge out but then i felt guilty because i basically trolled a dude out of a game.

    I don't mind being squidbagged/squidbagging when it's in the right context. Taunting is a feature in a lot of games for a reason. If you get an insane kill on me, taunt all you like, I can't even be mad at that. The stuff about toxic behaviour scaring off potential community members is very true though. When it's being done just to be a vindictive douche is when it becomes a problem.

    This is a well constructed video and I do feel as if I resonate with a lot of the points made here, but I feel like overall I disagree about squid bagging being this horribly toxic god complex people have. I do think that it is inherently toxic and when it’s used to harass a player over and over and over again I think it’s terrible. When it’s used as just a playful gesture amidst a game though I’ve never seen it as troublesome. Like if you got another inkjet with your inkjet or got a quad from the rainmaker bubble. I think that most people that do the action are either doing because they’re getting revenge on someone that’s done it to them or because they’ve done a really good play and want to show that off. Whether that leads to their downfall or not. I do think it can be harmful if used too much, but overall I think it’s just a part of gaming in general. Nice video though, I do think having conversations around this topic would be beneficial for the community overall.

    • @keengoon116
      @keengoon116 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I agree. I feel like people are either saying it's harmless or it's the epitome of evil. There's the healthy friendly squidbagging when you celebrate your victorious inkjet 1v1's or kill your friend in solo, and there's the more toxic squidbagging when you're harassing some kid and bagging them over and over. The latter i'm not a huge fan of, but i don't want people to get rid of squidbagging altogether. I also think people are overreacting when they see someone bagging, like bro he's not calling you names he's just being a goof. You'll win the game and let that speak for itself. Or just bag back haha

    Squidbagging is low tier taunting, anyway. 0 points for creativity. The best way to taunt is to deplete your ink, then try to throw a curling bomb. You won’t have enough ink, but if you hold down the sub button, you’ll look like your dabbing on them. At least put some effort into your taunt.
    That being said, the only place I enjoy squidbagging is with my crew in Salmon Run.

    I hate squid-bagging. I die a lot. It’s how I play! And every time (about 1/7 of people who kill me who have the opportunity to squid-bag do squid-bag.) someone squid-bags me, I get frustrated and I ask myself ‘Why? you already showed me you’re “better” than me by killing me. Why do you need to show me how much i suck when you’ve already killed me?’ It’s just a rude thing to do.
    What really wows me is when I kill someone, and then again, and again, but then they get me back. Neither of us have squid-bagged each other. After that match, they got a different weapon out. Then they killed me a lot. After that round, stages changed. They friend requested me. It was pretty cool. I respect them.

  • @scribblecloud
    @scribblecloud ปีที่แล้ว +4

    absolutely. I literally cannot bring myself to play online tf2 because the communication through chat and voice chat makes it way more terrifying and just makes me think my team will probably hate me or i wont read or hear what theyre saying properly and mess something up. Splatoon is way more relaxing in that regard. i DO really REALLY wish though that there was an optional ingame feature to voice chat with friends as setting up discord calls and having to use two separate audio inputs is kinda annoying.
    btw i usually only squid bag for short little bits if im really proud or surprised or excited by a win, and also usually less as a taunt to the enemy but more just as a show of excitement and happiness to myself and my team. (and i only do it for like a split second typically) basically the same youd use ''booyah''

    I have been squidbagged yet in S3 but S2 was really bad, esp. when I was first learning. At first it was humiliating but I just considered the player a poor sport. Another thing that use to happen is when you splat someone and they'd chase you all over the map every time they saw you. As my play improved, when they did it to me, I'd give it right back. Not good sportmanship, but it always seemed to teach them a lesson. the best lesson was the win we'd normally have.

    I have only played Splatoon 3, so maybe I have no place to say anything, but I think now that we can interact in the lobby, squid bagging has changed. Sure, people still use it to be toxic, but I feel like in the lobby waiting for a match it's more of a friendly gesture and sort of a way to read the room, so to speak. People who I squidbag with in the lobby seem to not be as aggressive than those who don't. The battles are still reasonably tough, but your less likely to be stuck in base all match. I've only really been squid bagged on twice in a match and it just made me roll my eyes. I understand that the connotations are kinda gross in different games, but it seems to me at least it's a more friendly gesture in 3. Of course, that's just my two cents

    • @clorofolle
      @clorofolle ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I get friended often by people I squidbag with in lobbies! I like to squidbag to show I'm friendly and then lead them off in adventures in the locker room or the stairs. We play and jump and squidback and booyah at eachother during matches, and some of them send me friend requests and try to join in in future games. I never thought someone could see a group of squids partying in lobby and think "they must be mocking the others"!

    • @klausd.6285
      @klausd.6285 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He did say in the video it depends on context. The context he was talking about was during a match and the person just being toxic while trying to bring others down.
      Not people being friendly in lobby waiting for a match.
      There is a massive difference between someone squidbagging you after every kill, even though you never killed them and they are only squidbagging you and someone squidbagging you in the lobby wanting to play around.

  • @retro_wolf

    To be completely honest, until about a year ago, I didn't know the dirty meaning of teabagging, and thought it was just a taunt lol. I mean it's still a taunt but there should be a cleaner way to do it (especially because I prefer to avoid inappropriate things). When playing with my friends, it's fun to taunt when it's not out of disrespect lol. I don't take offense to it, but it could really set many people off. So it's not really right. I feel the only time you should be doing it is like in a private match with your friends.

  • @SuperNerd528

    I never knew it was called squidbagging until I started interacting with the online community which as always is mostly male centric. I just thought it was a fun way to celebrate at the end of a game (Salmon run) or a fun way to splash around with your team mates especially pre game when were in the lobby now. I never saw it with malicious intent just a way of celebration. I didnt see it as a way of one uping or taunting. At the same time I've never really played FPS games. Splatoon is the only game I've ever played like this.

    Great insight on an oh-so-common action! Squidbagging is a fast track to developing a toxic mentality towards your growth as a player. Think about it, you're celebrating YOUR kill. Not only does it come off as cocky, but I believe it gives players a sort of blind spot. They think the game is about how good THEY can play 1v1 as opposed to 4v4, as the game is intended. Splatoon is simply way too team based to allow for players who play and think only for/of themselves to go far.

  • @CrazyAnimeGirl8D

    Back in splatoon 1 I was a teenager and get so upset over being squidbagged. I already had bad confidence so it just made it worse. So I would squidbag back thinking that would make them stop. Or I would have my friends who were on their team just stop playing so they would lose over and over again until they left probably from rage quitting. I calmed down during 2 and just learned to ignore them and keep on inking. I would still get deeply angry when it happened but I wouldn't try to get revenge. Now in 3 at 24 years old I just don't even blink an eye. I just don't care and just say oh wow how rude. But care for if one of my own team mates bag the enemy. Then I silently judge my team mate and keep on inking. Been a learning curve with age.

    When I used to play Splatoon (1), I was much more inclined to get tilted by seabaggers. Back then, I was still a teenager, and I can totally see how this drives away potential new players. One person doing it might not feel like much, but you could leave that lobby and encounter another seabagger just as easily. I hope newcomers learn to block these players if they're upsetting them, and continue playing the game at the very least.

    i really dont like t-bagging or squid-bagging. i dont mind if i lose, but t-bagging is grossly sexually aggressive. you can win and maybe jump around happily, but t-bagging has a sexual aggression to it that always makes me uneasy even if the player didnt do it on purpose or is aware of the connotations.
    i also agree that doing it in friendly ways like saying hello is totally different.
    esp as a woman whos into video games, which is often male-dominated and therefore has more aggression/ sexual aggression (not saying all men, just saying that compared to female dominated communities male ones have more aggression and sexual aggression, this DOES NOT MEAN ALL MEN)

    I remember Squid Bagging being a lot more common of an issue in Splatoon 2 instead of 3, that's something I think is because a lot of people playing 3 either grew up since 2, or are starting with 3 and literally don't know what it is outside of Salmon Runs and maybe Squid Parties (which are seemingly also really rare from my perspective). And in Salmon Run it's used in a positive context to the extreme (WE BEAT A HARD WAVE or KING SALMONOID DOWN!!!)

    Is there a term for those squid parties in solo games where they start having a little party right from the start, when nobody has disconnected, or nobody didn’t play the objective? Because it happened three times in two days for me when I hadn’t seen it in over a month’s play, and the fact that nobody besides my friends seem to care about it, accept it even, is making me take my first break of this game. And it takes a lot for me to do that, as it’s one of my few joys in life right now.
