  • Follow the Union Limited from Willowmore through the spectacular Toorwaterpoort to Oudtshoorn. Locomotives 19B 1412 and 19D 2698 provide the power, and they steam like clockwork throughout the day. Apart from the amazing stretch of line through Toorwaterpoort, another highlight of this video is the train running through the foothills of the Groot Swartberg, which is wearing a mantle of snow after some wild weather the previous day.

    I did this trip in the opposite direction, the river on the right was dry, but there was a cloudburst in the mountains, and we saw the wall of water coming downstream, just as well that we were running late, or our photographers would have been stranded on the opposite bank! Thanks for the fantastic memories you have brought back, of the incredible sound in the Poort, and the lovely sound of the 2 exhausts beating in unison!

    Beautiful video, especially as I know Willowmore and surrounds very well. The Toorwaterpoort trip is amazing. You can here the echos in the poort as the train, seemingly like a toy train, winds it way past the massive gorge. Too bad the Rosmead-Klipplaat-Oudsthoorn line is closed...

    magnificent film. even if it is 20 years old already. nothing better than steam and a cold day. but what makes me wonder. why are the locos working so ahrd_ after all they have only a few passenger coaches at the hook. and not 100 wagons iron ore from Saldanha?

    I just love the south African steam engines, Garratts and all. Its like it is a law that manufacturers cannot make these in HO, East African locomotives as well. MTH HO trains needs to make these.

    Once the engine has done a round 70 yards you can close the drain valves on the cylinders, otherwise you loose some power on the engine. I have worked steam engines and boilers on Ships.

    • @steamfreak
      @steamfreak  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cylinder cocks operate on the exhaust stroke, so they shouldn't cause any power loss.

    Wow! What awesome footage this is. Well done to whoever took the time to record this.. The firemen must have been kept pretty busy maintaining that head of steam. Is the water tender between the 2 locos standard or a recent design? Thanks for the upload........sheer joy!!!!!!!!

    • @budgie8264
      @budgie8264 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. They run on diesel the reason for the tanker behind in place of the coal wagon.

    • @steamfreak

      Thanks. It was formerly a 19 class tender, converted to water tank purposes.

    The Toorwaterpoort was great on my scrambler. But difficult. Local farmer thinks the railway line belongs to him.

    • @steamfreak

      +Deon Van der Westhuizen I hope you didn't end up on the wrong end off a firearm!

    • @Deontjie
      @Deontjie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We really met a local farmer who was convinced that the railroad, station, and public road belongs to him. If I were living in the middle of nowhere I would capture any travelers just for the new conversation. The reluctant farmer tried his best to persuade us not to go "over his land" through his poort. But we were friendly and committed. We thought we could use our off-road motorbikes to ride in the dry river bed, but that was impossible. We had to ride on the tracks. The new concrete sleepers made the journey very bumpy. Speed-limit for the train is only 15 km/h through the poort, so we were safe. We found about 30 dead big tortoises between the tracks. We assume they got trapped between the tracks and starved to death.

    • @steamfreak

      Yes, they are heavyweight cars and the locomotives are branch line locomotives. One could probably have done it, but 2 look good!

      And sure are gradients present,the force applied ti the wheels are alternative,not constant,,so more pistons,,more continuity thr force. this is a cause to a possible slipping.
