X (エックス) - Tunnel Scene 🌌 Acapella

  • An original a-cappella arrangement of Tunnel Scene from X (エックス, Ekkusu), released for the Game Boy in 1992. Even though I've never played this game (it was only released in Japan), the first time I heard this song I immediately imagined doing an A Cappella version. The game started as an experiment in doing 3D graphics on the Game Boy, and in a major way influenced the creation of the original Star Fox for the SNES. Nintendo included remixes of this song for Smash Bros. Brawl, Smash Bros Wii U, and Smash Bros. Ultimate.
This arrangement got way bigger than the original four-track Game Boy version of the song! I left out several video tracks, but you can still see the main ones. You'll have to use your imagination for the arpeggios...it was a nightmare to try and sync those up. For this expanded arrangement, I took inspiration from a few Famitracker versions done by fans of the game. Like most of my acapella projects, I could have kept going and going on this one, adding more to it, refining the arrangement even more...eventually I had to say "it's done!!". Thanks to Freya from Discord for sending me their helpful notation to start with.

    Did You Know?:
X was made by Argonaut Software. The success of X as a technical achievement for the Game Boy drew Nintendo's attention to Argonaut Software and got them to offer Argonaut an opportunity to co-develop the Super FX chip for Nintendo and make Star Fox (1993), Stunt Race FX (1994), and Star Fox 2 (1995).
Members of Argonaut Software would go on to join Nintendo and later found Q Games, who were responsible for Star Fox Command (2006), Star Fox 64 3D (2011), and the PixelJunk games.
The remaining members of Argonaut team would go on to make Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, Croc 2, The Emperor's New Groove (PS1), Disney's Aladdin in Nasira's Revenge (PS1), Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (PS1), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (PS1), Alien Resurrection (PS1), Bionicle the Game, and i-Ninja.

Like a melodic waterfall in my ear. I've never actually seen footage from X, and the whole time all I could think of was the original Star Fox, where you could fly into and through enemy ships in one level, only to read the description and see that there is indeed a link between the games. I always wondered why none of the Star Fox sequels brought that element back. That was my favorite part.

I'd love to see more obscure games (even ones that are region locked)! Plenty of ones with incredible music that we clearly never knew about. (Klonoa definitely deserves love for its amazing soundtrack)

At first I was wondering if it would sound good but then, in the first 5 seconds I thought two things:
    Man this sounds good!
    This is Smooth McfrickinGroove!
    Why wouldn't I like it?

I never thought I’d get to hear an awesome cover of this song! I first heard it in smash 4 and it instantly became a favourite of mine. After that I looked up the original game and for a gameboy game it was quite impressive. Anyway since the song/game wouldn’t be as well known over here I’m just surprised and happy to see this song get more attention

Holy shit man, this is one of the best things I've ever heard. This'll be one of those songs that I will randomly think of and be like 'If I don't listen to that right now, I don't think I'm gonna make it'. Srsly dude, keep it up!
