  • Denzel Walking Style Explained-Walking Technique with The Walking Code. Denzel Washington has a distinct walking style in movies that is as iconic as the sprinting style of Tom Cruise. It is purposeful yet relaxed, authoritative yet vulnerable. Join me to explore this unique and beloved walking style. How did he create it, what are its unique characteristics, and what parts of the style might you want to try and emulate. We will see clips from older movies like Devil in a Blue Dress and Virtuosity as well as newer movies like Flight and The Equalizer. Specifically, I will look at the following characteristics of his walk:
    Posture
    Head Movement
    Leg Swing
    Foot Position
    Shoulder and Hand Position

    This is the walk that I discovered! I wanted to incorporate a twist at the waist to allow full incorporation of the hips, but still be led by the shoulders, so as to remain masculine. This very walk is what I ended up with. It feels more natural the more I do it. I also do a lot of yoga and feel like this would be a lot harder without it.

    Fascinating. Appreciate the analysis so much and suggestions for healthier walking styles. Speaking of leading men, when I was little and noticed a height difference between a leading lady and a leading man in a movie we were watching, my dad said (of male movie stars): "They're all short, and they're all bow-legged." Ever since, the gait of male movie stars always grabs my attention and very often they do walk with that duck walk you talk about, legs kind of bowed and toes turned out instead of straight.

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It is very common in male actors. Not so much in female actresses because it is very hard to walk with duck feet in heels, and most actresses need to be able to walk well in heels.

    • @twocents8355
      @twocents8355 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, Dr. Martin. So dad was wrong about leading men being bow-legged. I believed that for the longest time, and now I know it's likely they just walk in a way that makes them seem bow-legged. @@ToddMartinMD

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @twocents8355 I wasn’t saying he was wrong. I have a theory that they become duck footed because the frequently have to walk slowly toward the camera, and doing duck feet naturally slows them down. Bow legs develop from that. This would probably affect leading men more because the camera is on them.

    • @twocents8355
      @twocents8355 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Excellent informational video. As an MD has there ever been a study on impact in last few decades of those plastic baby walkers may have on development of adult walk? Another would be a study of how infants progress from crawl to walk i.e. what of the development crawl technique may lead to how one walks. I ask because I seem to see more youthful men with what I call the forward doily walk than I ever have noticed before. Also the "push" some parents do to get their infant/ toddler walking for bragging rights in today's helicopter parent world.
    Another fun one to analyze is the overt swagger (ghetto or NY Italian think John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever) or the primal posturing one sees in public places by those over steroidal workout types.
    I was slow to begin walking but was very proficient in my 'crawl' technique' which got laughs in old home videos. LOL

      I don’t know about the effect of strollers on gait as people get older. There seems to be more dysfunctional walking in people these days, but the causes are probably many. There are many different styles-some are just bad mechanics and some are cultural, where people are consciously trying to walk a certain way which may not be normal.

    He's not using lateral bend to place the heel. He's positioning his head over the foot for balance - check out David Weck and spinal engine theory. His internally over rotated shoulders are not the consequence of that. Best walk still remains with Keanu when it comes to Hollywood ❤ flawless energy transfer.

    • @seancidy6008
      @seancidy6008 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Denziel does not have big shoulders, that is why the lateral bend is not obvious to you. The proportionately biggest shoulders of any actor belonged to James Caan. Tell me he isn't using lateral bend. th-cam.com/video/P7GD795XDAw/w-d-xo.html

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I don’t think Weck’s principle makes any sense, although I know ow people who watch him would think this. For one, his head is not over his foot when his heel comes down at all. It is out in front of him, which is or
      al gait. I think Weck tries to shoehorn midfoot running principles i not walking, but that just doesn’t work. We will just have to agree to disagree.

      There are aspects of the walk that are cool and other aspects that are not the healthiest. I want to give people a bit of an understanding of healthy walking while also attracting an audience that doesn’t necessarily gravitate towards videos about body mechanics. In that respect it is doing exactly what I was hoping for.

    • @princessigbo2631
      @princessigbo2631 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Au contraire: being intentional with your motion is deep regardless of race or gender.
      How you walk affects your self perception as well as other’s perspective of you.
      In the video clip, Denzel explained the reason why he adopted this walk-he was emulating the walk of a man he admired.
      Black men/people are not a monolith, we do not all have “dope walks” and we do possess the capacity for them introspection.
