- Denzel Walking Style Explained-Walking Technique with The Walking Code. Denzel Washington has a distinct walking style in movies that is as iconic as the sprinting style of Tom Cruise. It is purposeful yet relaxed, authoritative yet vulnerable. Join me to explore this unique and beloved walking style. How did he create it, what are its unique characteristics, and what parts of the style might you want to try and emulate. We will see clips from older movies like Devil in a Blue Dress and Virtuosity as well as newer movies like Flight and The Equalizer. Specifically, I will look at the following characteristics of his walk:
Posture
Head Movement
Leg Swing
Foot Position
Shoulder and Hand Position

denzel is awesome, swaggering everywhere. We need an entire generation of Denzel's in the USA. bring that masculine stuff back!!!
Absolutely
I love his walk. So strong and confident.
Definitely
Wow my sisters and I always talk about Denzel's walk, you always know it's him😊
For sure.
Listening to you deconstruct Denzel's walk, I realize how much you understand walking mechanics.
Thanks
He is one of my favourite actors as well, everything he does I enjoy.
Me too.
Lord Jesus YES!!!!!! Denzel - his walk was the first thing I noticed before I ever learned his name ❤❤❤
A fellow fan
Yes indeed. Same here
Yes, he walks like a boss. I love it.
Thanks
As an amateur animator studying walk cycles for animating characters, you videos are not only helpful to learn to walk properly, but are a treasure trove of information for animators.
I have heard that from other animators. Thanks so much.
Bruce Lee, Stallone, Travolta, Arnold, and Denzel have the most iconic walks.
Travolta mentioned changing his walking each movie
I have found none of these to be even moderately impressive.
@@williamj.dovejr.8613 Absolutely!!!
@@ToddMartinMD now that you say , i see it ;) but always a swing in it
Yes, they all swing one foot in front of the other. Like women.
Denzel walk was at its best in "Training Day"
It was great
His walk says, "I'm THE MAN!!" Period!!! Especially in those Equalizer movies!!!!
Definitely. A corkscrew threw the chin says that too.
Excellent analysis of a perfect pain free relaxed walk by Dr.Tod,thanks.
Thanks
This style of video is very good at getting the big picture across while holding the viewer's attention.
Thank you. I am glad you liked it. I am considering more of these.
This is the walk that I discovered! I wanted to incorporate a twist at the waist to allow full incorporation of the hips, but still be led by the shoulders, so as to remain masculine. This very walk is what I ended up with. It feels more natural the more I do it. I also do a lot of yoga and feel like this would be a lot harder without it.
Glad you like it. Yoga can definitely help with incorporating those core muscles into your movement.
@@ToddMartinMDI’m a born and bred NYer. My brothers all walked the same way as Denzel. It’s a slight glide and bop that NYers all recognize easily. 🥰
Sorry I didn't have your videos 10- 15 years ago was a nurse. But the lateral stride that Denzel does reminds me of something we used to call the bop but smoother. So, Denzel is doing the smooth bop ;)
I guess he is.
His walk, his his laugh, his side eye, and him having to clap in every movie. It just makes me weak.❤
When you compared his walk to the other male actors sheesh it all just made sense. The others were nothing compared to him . God bless this beautiful man
Absolutely one of a kind.
My dad has that same swagger
70 years old and walks like he still a young buck.
Why are you calling him old? He is a young buck to someone 90 in the nursing home. This video is about walking not ageing.
Yes Denzell's walk is synonyms to Spike Lee's moving camera attached on the actor view point. I love Denzell and Spike's walk at the beginning of Malcolm X...classic. lol
Great movie.
My algorithm too smooth right now! 👍🏾 Great video!
Thanks
I just thought Denzel ran track at some point in past time. I've always noticed track runners to have a stride as Denzel's🏃🏾♂️LOL😂He straightened up what I knew as "Pimp Walk"🕺🏾
In the movie Malcom X, he did a really exaggerated pimp walk in the scenes of Malcom's earlier life.
I been walking like Denzel since St. Elsewhere!🤣🤣🤣
You got the mechanics down. But the most important thing is the feeling. The Spirit.
Absolutely.
What a good analysis! I used to walk bending to the right because of my leg being shorter.
I am glad you enjoyed it.
I never noticed his walk, but I definitely could see how others do now that I pay attention. Thank you for the description.
My pleasure
Mr. Denzel Washington walks like my late husband, Roman, strode. His style of ambulation inspired others to take notice and trust his competence before he ever said a word.
Fascinating. Appreciate the analysis so much and suggestions for healthier walking styles. Speaking of leading men, when I was little and noticed a height difference between a leading lady and a leading man in a movie we were watching, my dad said (of male movie stars): "They're all short, and they're all bow-legged." Ever since, the gait of male movie stars always grabs my attention and very often they do walk with that duck walk you talk about, legs kind of bowed and toes turned out instead of straight.
It is very common in male actors. Not so much in female actresses because it is very hard to walk with duck feet in heels, and most actresses need to be able to walk well in heels.
Thanks, Dr. Martin. So dad was wrong about leading men being bow-legged. I believed that for the longest time, and now I know it's likely they just walk in a way that makes them seem bow-legged. @@ToddMartinMD
@twocents8355 I wasn’t saying he was wrong. I have a theory that they become duck footed because the frequently have to walk slowly toward the camera, and doing duck feet naturally slows them down. Bow legs develop from that. This would probably affect leading men more because the camera is on them.
Thanks again. Have learned so much from you. I thought bow legs were something one was born with but now know the condition may be the result of what a leading man's job requires. @@ToddMartinMD
@@twocents8355 Glad you are learning a lot. If the leading men took my course, they could walk slower without the duck feet and bow legs. I'm waiting for Idris Elba to give me a call.
There is no one cooler than denzel sheesh
Agreed
Fantastic assessment of Denzel’s unique walk. I just discovered your channel after a female group discussion on how much we dislike men who do the duck walk. Denzel was mentioned as having a perfect walk! Just another perfect thing about this special man.
Now I’m going to watch more and improve my walking for exercise. Oh yes, Denzel can do no wrong. 👍😀
Awesome! Thank you!
I am not a movie goer, so this is the first time I have seen Mr Washington's walk - I have not seen his walk either on or off camera before. It is so good to see this comparison with your (Dr Martin) walking code. To me, Mr Washington 's walk, which I feel uncomfortable with, is looking from the outside in, whereas with the walking code, you look from the inside out.
Interesting point. Thanks.
Since you’re not a movie goer, a tip, most refer as Dr. Washington
@@samahhassan9207 Thank you.
Haha, I thought I was the only one who tries to copy Denzel's walk. It's effortless and carries so much swagger. You showed my favorite Denzel characters, Devil in a Blue Dress and Training Day. Those were perfect examples. His son has a similar walk, but more upright and he has a little bounce in it. His walk in Blackkklansman was hilarious.
I am not recommending people try and copy it, but I did want to break it down since people often comment on it.
Thrilled to have discovered this channel well into my 50s. I started to apply some of the tips and it’s already decreased the pain I felt on my legs and hips. Not aiming to walk like Denzel but he’s a great specimen. Thanks Dr T.
Welcome aboard!
Training day Denzel was awesome
Very true
Either you have it or you don’t. Soul comes into play as well. Denzel is the man💪🏿 in acting.

I am an AA man and have been told on occasion I walk similar to him, like a strut. When I started working in corporate America, I was actually told to work on modifying my walk because it could come of as “ intimidating “ and could be seen negatively by the client base. Unfortunately I couldn’t do such a thing so I ended up getting a government job, lower pay, but happier to be around individuals who get “ the walk” and not make a big deal about it
That’s too bad you couldn’t make it work in corporate America. I hope you find yourself in a good place.
@@ToddMartinMD this was some years ago however I attribute to a conditioning process where they want to break you down in every way and build you back up to their liking. Have been in a good place for some time. BTW, great breakdown on the video .
Thanks for sharing your experience.
It looks like Mr. Washington is using a swimmers upper body and arm with the lower body form that you’re teaching, Dr. Todd. Smoother than a bop.
That’s an interesting observation.
@@ToddMartinMD I learned about swimming from reading a book how the upper body, arms and hands have to be positioned, move and flow in certain strokes. The hands either slice the water facing outward or cup the water facing toward the back of the body. Mr. Washington exhibits a swimmers body while he’s walking.
Thank you! Especially for mentioning the rotator cuff stress. His walk is amazing though. The shoulder movement strikes me as strong and aggressive but so subtle.
You are so welcome!
Most helpful for me, minutes 9-12. I do all three of the nose for that hover. Something to work on.
Excellent
Denzel's walk telegraphs that something is holding him back and tries to twist him but he keeps on going forward regardless. Or sometimes it communicates that Denzel isn't in a rush as he knows that he's gonna get where he's going anyways. I think the walk adds to the different characters he plays big time. His son David has the same walk in TENET.
Great points.
Awesome video!
Many thanks
Truthfully grossly underscored in Hollywood wood with all the movies he acted in training day was what the award winning what a joke A soldier story, He got game, Carbon copy, Fences the list goes Denzel is the Truth 💯✊🏾🇯🇲💪🏾
He is a legend no matter how many oscars he won or didn’t win.
Great channel Great info thx alot new sub

@@ToddMartinMD thx my Brutha
Hey Doc. this like butter on toast, much appreciated!
My pleasure
Denzel is one of my all-time favorite actors, and I love this breakdown! I'm going to be looking for these elements, especially the "telegraphing" where he is going by turning his head. This is my second video of yours, and thank you for this analysis, Dr. Martin!
You are welcome. I’m glad you liked it
I feel compelled to leave a comment. Denzel is also one of my favourite actors and his idiosyncratic walk was always piqued my interest. I was fortunate to find this video. While watching it I was completely engaged. Walking is something people often take for granted and it was interesting to see a thorough analysis of it. Subscribed.
Thanks for watching and subscribing.
I haven't had time to check out your recent videos, Todd, but this just popped up on my feed and I love it! I shall be sharing on Facebook and Twitter (X)!
Awesome. Thanks, James. Very good to hear from you. I hope you are doing well.
@@ToddMartinMDYeah, I'm doing fine, thanks, Todd. I am walking really well after all my issues - Your channel and surgery and physio have literally got me back on my feet!
@@rayafilms So great to hear. Thanks, James.
My dear Denzel’s walk is ultimate cool.
What you termed ‘duck foot’ is what our ancestors call slew foot. Check out Ocho Cinco stand and footing also pigeon toes spike Lee and knock knees those people are what they are❤
Thanks
Nice vid brother, Denzel's walk always been the supporting character in his movies. Gotta do Samuel L. Jackson's walk next!! 🙏🏼💯
Good idea. Thanks
If “Bring it on baby!” was ever captured in a walk Denzels got it 💯 Whilst other stars walk like they’re walking to the gallows 😂
You know it.
My pop had a killer walk. It just some you had to go thru as a man to possess that Walk. You had to be tried, tested and persevered to have that walk.
Interesting observation.
I need to study this, i didn't know i will need a PHD to know how to walk properly !
I am not suggesting people try and copy his walk. I’m just explaining what people appreciate about it.
How many people think Obama copied Denzel's walk?
Definitely
Good Observation:)
Pretty much
Not a bad move... I'm taking notes myself. LOL
I don't think he copied his walk, he copied his whole damn style 😂😂😂
My Wife always tells me that I walk like Denzel. I never noticed because I felt and feel that I walk just like my Father. My Father spent 29 years in the U.S. Army. I spent 23 years in the U.S. Marines. I strongly feel that it is a combination of the marching and close order drill along with an African swag. Either way I love MY stride! Thanks Dad!
Ubuntu. Ma'at. Ase' 👊🏿
I’m sure there are a lot of people with a similar walk.
@@ToddMartinMD Probably.
Damn, I walk like Denzel, and I do have tendinitis in my left shoulder. This could be the reason. Thanks for the tip.
My pleasure.
Excellent informational video. As an MD has there ever been a study on impact in last few decades of those plastic baby walkers may have on development of adult walk? Another would be a study of how infants progress from crawl to walk i.e. what of the development crawl technique may lead to how one walks. I ask because I seem to see more youthful men with what I call the forward doily walk than I ever have noticed before. Also the "push" some parents do to get their infant/ toddler walking for bragging rights in today's helicopter parent world.
Another fun one to analyze is the overt swagger (ghetto or NY Italian think John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever) or the primal posturing one sees in public places by those over steroidal workout types.
I was slow to begin walking but was very proficient in my 'crawl' technique' which got laughs in old home videos. LOL
I don’t know about the effect of strollers on gait as people get older. There seems to be more dysfunctional walking in people these days, but the causes are probably many. There are many different styles-some are just bad mechanics and some are cultural, where people are consciously trying to walk a certain way which may not be normal.
In depth
Hope you enjoyed it.
This was a great idea for a video.
I am glad you liked it.
Please do one RIP Jim Brown had that swagger walk. Mr. Obama similar walk also
Wait. Tom Cruise runs like a cartoon chicken. Ever notice that? But Denzel has swag for days.
I love the way Tom Cruise runs
This was dope. Can you break down Jordan’s walk?
Thanks.. I will have to check it out first.
Love this, Denzel is the goat. Can you do a walking style on stone cold Steve Austin. I started to do this as my signature walk and I’ve noticed my confidence skyrocket as well respect from others. Not to mention the ladies love it
Glad you liked it. I’ll have to take a look at Steve Austin’s walk. I haven’t noticed anything special about it.
And Denzel son as well
I’ll check it out
Bruce Lee had that walk too!!! Especially in Enter The Dragon!!! Only certain men have that I'm The Man walk!!!
Very confident.
man...I just wanna walk like Denzel! lol
I wouldn't try to copy it.

Did you ever tell Denzel that good information? Interesting
I’m waiting by the phone for him to call.
This is a great video. You just found a new subscriber
Thanks and welcome
Loved it 🙏🏽
Thanks
@5:50 The guy on the left is indian actor Sanjay Dutt. He also has a unique walk. A manly swagger that is his signature movement.
Dutt is great. I did a video on him a couple years ago.
@ToddMartinMD I will be sure to check it out. Just discovered your channel and subscribed after watching this video. Good work
no longer PC but this is subtle version of what we used to simply call "Pimp Walk" in the old neighborhood. Check out former GSW splash brother Klay Thompson
Many people have felt the same.
Tom Cruise's run is really stiff. It's not fast, but it looks like the runner is at his limit
Denzel walk works because he's Denzel. He walks the walk.
True
Interesting analysis. I've wondereed about the walking stylesf Clint Eastwood and Henry Fonda. They both have and had a striking gliding stride.
Clint’s stride is nice and normal, the way I would recommend. I have to check out Fonda.
@@ToddMartinMD Hi Todd. Thanks for your reply. I will disagree about Clint. It might be normal in the sense of healthy but I have always found it very distinctive. Maybe not back in Rawhide days but, yes, since then.
@michaelkelemen5567 I just watched him in one of the old spaghetti westerns to check, so it could be different recently.
It just looks like a confident man’s walk.
next video on Michael J Fox, his walk style on For Love or Money was too good
I never k es he had. specific walk. I will have to check it out.
absolutely sir@@ToddMartinMD
Sir, Sir, Can we forget the mechanics of his walk for a moment and let us enjoy this Gift from God? Please edit this video and show him walking in the rain in "Mo Better Blue" and in the navy's white uniform in "Crimson Tide." 😂😂😂😂😂 Just kidding!! Great video. 😘
Thanks
We used to call the walk with the tilt " tipping" and men tipped to varying degrees.
Thanks for the info

The only actor who compares is yul brynner. He had an amazing walk.
I’ll have to check out some Yul Videos
@@ToddMartinMD he is before your time, but that man could walk. I am enjoying these celebrity walk break downs. Would love a few great women walkers.
@@SCsweettea Not too far. I have seen him in plenty of stuff. I just haven't studied his gait.
@@SCsweettea If you have a thought on women walkers, let me know. Much of the female gait for actresses is going to be an affectation or due to the clothes they are wearing, so I would be interested to hear your choices.
I love your Walking Styles analyzis, can you analyze Thomas Shelby walk? His walking style is so weird cause his arms are wide open, but people idolize his "alpha male walk"
I’ve seen some of those alpha walk videos. I will consider that. If you have any links to videos of him walking that show his whole body clearly (not so dark), please share them with me.
I wish you could analyze my walk. Can I book a session?
I do video sessions but I prefer it to be people who are enrolled in my course and already familiar with my techniques and have practiced them. It makes it much more productive.
1:16 everyone had somebody in the neighborhood who had a walk… Ours was 1969 Charlie. Keep in gangsta…😂😂
🙏🏾
Glad you enjoyed it.
I always noticed Clint Eastwood had a unique walk.
He does
He's not using lateral bend to place the heel. He's positioning his head over the foot for balance - check out David Weck and spinal engine theory. His internally over rotated shoulders are not the consequence of that. Best walk still remains with Keanu when it comes to Hollywood ❤ flawless energy transfer.
Denziel does not have big shoulders, that is why the lateral bend is not obvious to you. The proportionately biggest shoulders of any actor belonged to James Caan. Tell me he isn't using lateral bend. th-cam.com/video/P7GD795XDAw/w-d-xo.html
I don’t think Weck’s principle makes any sense, although I know ow people who watch him would think this. For one, his head is not over his foot when his heel comes down at all. It is out in front of him, which is or
al gait. I think Weck tries to shoehorn midfoot running principles i not walking, but that just doesn’t work. We will just have to agree to disagree.
Tom Cruises run? I didn't know he had one and if he does, it can hardly be compared with Denzel's walk. Not close!
You must not watch Tom Cruise’s movies. Either way, this is not a competition.

How about President Obama? No other president had the "cool brother" walk.😊
@barbarabutterfield2679 His walk is really just a normal basic walk. So many people walk poorly that it may seem different to some, but there isn’t anything that stands out about his walk to analyze. But thanks for the suggestion.
Elements of John Wayne's walk with dropping right should and palms backward. I could see it best in your demonstration, Dr. Tod.
Thanks
02:33 Tupac was very “duck footed.” 😅
I didn’t know that
Cool Strides I admired:
Denzel Washington
Michael Jordan
Barrack Obama
Deion Sanders
Good list
The dadbod walk.
Good video..but I don’t know if it’s that deep.. Black man have always had a dope walk..
There are aspects of the walk that are cool and other aspects that are not the healthiest. I want to give people a bit of an understanding of healthy walking while also attracting an audience that doesn’t necessarily gravitate towards videos about body mechanics. In that respect it is doing exactly what I was hoping for.
Au contraire: being intentional with your motion is deep regardless of race or gender.
How you walk affects your self perception as well as other’s perspective of you.
In the video clip, Denzel explained the reason why he adopted this walk-he was emulating the walk of a man he admired.
Black men/people are not a monolith, we do not all have “dope walks” and we do possess the capacity for them introspection.
I’ve always watched how a man walks. You’ll have a cool walk as long as you don’t go duck style. I like a slight bulldog walk too.
I agree. The duck foot walk doesn’t look cool, but there are a surprising number of masculine male actors that walk that way.
Putin also has confident walk
He has the gunslinger walk, from his KGB days.
You can't teach cool. You either have it or you don't. That's why there's only one Denzel ! Check out Daniel Craig's walk in his Bond films. You can't teach swag like that 😅
I have a video on Daniel Craig’s walk in the Bond films. You actually can teach the walk, but I am not suggesting people try and copy it. You obviously can’t teach someone to be Denzel.
Walk like A MAN with the confidence of a noble member of royalty.
Good recommendation
He walks in slow motion. That’s it.
Slow motion amplifies the good and bad. People walking with duck feet look bad in slow motion.
Denzel's walk is colloquial what we call in the hood as 'pimpin' ..yet Not in the derogatory sense.
Trust, it's cultural and historic and natually how many of our men have displayed that Black Man swagger.
Also, pls note Denzel happens to be slightly bow-legged which adds to the mystique. 🖤
Thanks.
Lmao 😁
His walk is pimpish...but aggressive and deliberate.
good description
