  • This time around, we race the New Haven I-5 against Mallard, the fastest steam locomotive in the world!
You may be wondering what makes Mallard the fastest so I’ll tell you!
On July 3rd in 1938, Mallard set the steam speed record by reaching 126 MPH (202.777 km/h) on a downhill slope in England! It’s also important to know that Mallard still holds the official steam speed record to this day!
Now I’ll go into detail about the New Haven I-5.
Ten I-5s were built for the New Haven railroad in 1937. Eight of them were constantly in service pulling passenger trains such as the Merchants Limited while the other two were in storage or repair in case one of the other eight needed to be replaced. They were amazing locomotives in terms of design and reliability but were never pushed to their limits due to speed restrictions on the railroad. In 1951, all ten of the I-5s were retired and then sadly scrapped.
There’s no commentary or background music in this video, much like the other racing videos but I hope you all enjoy the race anyways!

I’d also like to add that if you want to request an idea for a future video, I encourage you to leave a comment on what you want me to do, whether it be another race or maybe a strength contest between locomotives!
