- Primal Scream, Little Barrie and The The guitarist Barrie Cadogan plays his 1962 Gibson ES-330 at Gibson HQ in London and tells the story of how he acquired the vintage guitar. Along the way, Barrie shows off some killer tones, talks Bigbys and recalls the time he sold an ES-335 to Radiohead's Ed O'Brien.

I could literally spend weeks just watching Barrie play guitar. Even without the urge to pickup one of mine to try and pick out what he’s doing.
Barrie Cadogan is the best guitarist in the UK at the moment and in my opinion, he is theee guitar hero of my generation. It's great to see him getting some of the recognition he deserves, these videos are an absolute pleasure! So are the comments :)
Could not agree more. He appreciates the best parts of the past, but has his own unique voice as a guitar player. What a gem.
He's good but he doesn't make me pick up the instrument. I get that taste is subjective but I think in my opinion that Buck fellow is a phenomenal player from the UK, especially how he digs deep into his soloing and changes effortlessly between his pick and fingers.

Every time I watch this it reminds how important rhythm is in good guitar playing. Guitar playing is at its most musical IMO when its thought of as part of the rhythm section.

Usually you learn about the importance of rhythm in your first guitar lesson at the age of six. But better later than never.

He knows how to use the volume and tone controls (as well as being a thoughtful, nuanced guitar player). That changes everything. Just turning up to 10 on the guitar is bizarre, yet so many people do it.

And it's because he is a monster vintage-style player who knows exactly how to use his equipment
That room iteself provides a fantastic natural reverb. The sound would be very different in a small room, particularly if carpeted and other things absorbing the reflections. I'd bet almost any instrument or vocal would be complemented by that room's reverb, just listen the the room's sound when he's only speaking.

I’ve been playing that amp twice and it has a killer sound. It has only 5w. Sounds like God.

Thanks so much for posting this. Barrie Cadogan is an amazing player - melodic, raunchy, combining double-stops, runs, chordal licks, resulting in an economic and highly tasteful style; this video has been a revelation to me, and I will not only be going back to some of Barrie's previous playing, but will be re-watching this video regularly.

People interested in guitar playing need to know this guy. He has such a unique approach and so much taste. Keep em coming !

This guitar sounds so great! I was looking for that percussive, warm midrangy sound that a 335 can't provide. A 330 is now on my whish list.
Great guitar, great player, one of the best and most underrated guitars.
it's kind of a lovely surprise when you hear a guy like this pick up and play and really be a great player. So many of the guitarists from bands like Primal Scream seem to be great and making iconic riffs but actually not too well versed in many styles like this gentleman

Love it, like a love letter to the 330. I've got one that looks identical with the b7 bigsby and cherry red, though it's got dot inlays and it's my favorite guitar as well.
No pedals. No cranked up amp. No reverb. This is rock-n-roll!
The natural reverb of that room itself is fantastic and very complimentary.
No cranked up amp kinda flies in the face of a rock and roll, a clean tone isn’t really part of the equation. Plus his is cranked enough to be distorted, so...

Joshua Bloodsworth He was never a part of the original line up of Primal Scream, when you were growing up. He played with them for a few years.

I was tossing up between the 335 and 330. This has made my mind up. Just great playing with such an expressive and interesting sounding Guitar. Almost from another time somehow.

The ES-330, made famous in the jazz world by greats like Grant Green and Emily Remler. Awesome sounding guitar.

The Golden Age for Gibson P90s, the early 60's were crazy soulful pickups.

I love barrie’s playing so unique and such a great tone, I remember hanging out in vintage and rare in denmark street when he worked there, made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when he played! a really nice guy too had time for everyone.
This video (& Barrie's playing!) is literally the reason I bought my ES-330 '61 reissue....and I'm SO glad I did :-)

The thing with this amp is that you have to crank it otherwise it sounds like shit unless you have pedals.
I had to get rid of mine because I needed money but with an EQ pedal and a good overdrive it has a pretty decent sound for the price. I never tried it with the original cab I plugged it into a Marshall 4x12. I just think it should be more bassy.
@@Junction335 yeah I like a bassier amp too. Ended up shelling out a bit of cash and getting a Fender Deluxe Reverb.
Still got a nice vintage sound and breaks up nice when you crank it, but a lot more bass.

Cadogan is wearing vintage style black pointed toe shoes from the pre-surfer early 1960s or late 50s. (Can't tell if he also has the steel toes and a switchblade ready to rumble).

The Funky Funky Meters. I didn’t learn about them till I heard Phil from Pantera talk about music from Louisiana. And me being from south Texas on the gulf. I knew I had to love this band before listening to them

Hi Barrie, I'm old now and I've been playing guitar for years and like most guitarist, It's something you'll ever be able to put down. The reason that I'm commenting on your video is that I first heard of you a couple of years ago and there was something about your playing that kept me coming back and listening. I really love that you're into the old sounds. Most music today sucks, but you bring on a whole new light and life to your sound. Absolutely incredible playing. I'm very surprised that someone so young is so talented and into this kind of music. It's great , keep up the videos. Great old guitars, must of cost you a fortune for them. There's just something about old instruments. So many young musicians tode ay just suck as far as I'm concerned. Don't get me wrong, even young girls that can play their asses off. TH-cam is a great venue for showcasing people's talent. I'm talking about girls that are like 15 or 16 years old. Some unbelievable talent out there, but these are the people who never seem to make it big in the music business. Anyways, just thought I'd say, you do a great job. Recently got a Epi Casino cheap because the owner had tried a Bigsby and subsequently removed it.
I covered over the two ragged holes with black stickers of a fly and a spider. It's my first hollowbody style guitar Really I opted for the more affordable Casino just to try out P90's but now it's equal favourite alongside my Hot Rod Tele
I have probably watched this once a day since discovering it a month ago 😂. It’s given me such a three-three-oh hankering. ❤
