Golden Gate Bridge with Awesome San Francisco Fog - Quadcopter Aerial Views

- Aerial views of the world famous Golden Gate Bridge and the City of San Francisco in the background. On this day the bridge was shrouded in awesome San Francisco fog. This is the final video edit using footage from 3 flights I made back in November 30, 2013 at the world famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. I flew a DJI Phantom1 quadcopter drone and captured video using a GoPro Hero 3+ black edition camera slung on a 2-dimensional gimbal mounted to the belly of the quadcopter.

I was on a bus from Mill Valley to San Francisco early one morning. The sun was coming up over the Berkeley Hills to the east. A huge oil tanker was coming in from the Pacific. Like a perfect machine or an intricate ballet, our bus came onto the Golden Gate Bridge just as the ship was gliding underneath the bridge. A vision of being at the perfect place at the perfect moment. I could see the top of the tanker as it passed directly under us. Meanwhile rays of sunlight splashing us all.

This bridge is definitely on my "Drone Bucket List" - I'm waiting untill I have enough bail money saved up. LOL
I've flown over it multiple times in recent months and it was hands down the best flight I've ever done. Highlyyyy recommend!

In case you didn't know, flying in restricted airspace will bring more restrictions down on everyone in the multirotor/quadcopter/RC flying community. Please Google "Don't Fly Drones Here", you will clearly see that where you're flying (especially over the GG Bridge) is marked as restricted and will get you in trouble. I speak from experience.
I was getting some footage at (what I thought was a regular park) in South SF when an ARMED park ranger came up to me and my friend and told me I was not allowed to fly in national parks and we had to show ID so he could do a background check (like we were terrorists). He specifically mentioned that someone flew a drone over the Golden Gate Bridge (maybe or maybe not you) and they now had to crack down. He let me off with a warning (he was supposed to confiscate my quadcopter).
I'm happy that you want to get great footage (so do I), but please PLEASE don't ruin it for the rest of us. I had also thought about flying from the same place you were before (I take my tourist buddies there all the time) but I know its illegal to fly there (Anywhere on that North coast as well as from the Presidio all the way down to Ocean Beach). There have been several cases in the news where irresponsible pilots did something silly and made the entire community look bad.
Not hatin on ya...but we're already under scrutiny from the public and negative press has been making some people downright hostile towards our community.

R Tan My thoughts exactly! We've had people flying drones over our fires here in southern California. In doing so the aircraft couldn't fly to drop water and fire retardant, which caused the fires to spread faster. Although these videos by drones are very cool and I enjoy them immensely, use some common sense and don't fly them in the airspace where aircraft go or other restricted areas!
I can see why the government would freak out considering all the bad things that have been going on with that criminal group in the middle east. Stay safe
Let them try to restrict....RESIST. The government should not be jack-booted overlords. Kali-fornia is a perfect example .....cops in helicopters overhead at all times, permit to camp or drive off the road, license to trim trees or fingernails, F OFF.

Im from the Philippines. can you give me some tips on how to fly Drone in that area ? they say its illegal to fly. i tried it 3 days ago someone approached me and told me to stop cuz its illegal or he will call the cops. is it true? mwybe you can help me. tomorrow will be my last day here in sfo. so sad. thanks a lof

I tried to take off from this location with my Mavic Pro and immediately after it launched I lost signal. It was hovering about 15 ft off the ground fighting the wind with absolutely no control whatsoever. Thank god it hovered in the same spot despite the high gust of wind. Eventually I was able to connect but it auto landed once it connected.Never again will I do this but also lucky I didn't get in trouble with the Park Rangers. I was naive to think it was okay to fly near the bridge.
too bad we can't fly the drone where ever we want like back in the days anymore...now there are too many restrictions with drones.

A sign mounted on a pole in the Marin County parking lot for the Golden
Gate Bridge says “Unmanned Aircraft/ Drones: Launching, landing or
operating unmanned or remote controlled aircraft/drones is prohibited
near the Golden Gate Bridge. Please report all activity to Golden Gate
Bridge Dispatch (415) 923-2230.”

Awesome views and footage, but come on - this is the stuff that gets us all bad press. Been flying long range FPV for 6 years and would love to fly over GG but don't because I know it's not safe and not in best interest of hobby. Not hating on your flight but posting this sort of thing isn't good.

networkit I agree. Though the video is awesome, and we would all like to FPV fly there, but in today's world, it isn't really the "hobby friendly thing to do". Though the DJIs are pretty reliable, you have to always consider the "What If" factor -- as in what if you lost a motor while flying hundreds of feet above the traffic? A falling DJI from altitude could easily smash somebody's windshield on a car below. That could lead to some serious trouble on the Golden Gate Bridge or elsewhere. Also, the flight was well above the 400 foot (stay below) limit.When I fly my quad (home-built Aeroquad) I am always careful to stay clear of people and situations that could be dangerous. As a 30+ year RC pilot, and a 25+ year full scale pilot, safety is always a top priority of mine and should be for other RC pilots. I have loved this hobby for many years and would hate to see it "legislated out of existence."
