      Waiting List can be troublesome but RAC(Reserved Against Cancellation) is ok. You will most probably get seats with RAC if you book one week in advance but never travel if you're in the waiting list because as your experience shows if you're in the waiting list at the time of travel you will be in RAC but if you're in RAC at the time of booking there is more than 90% chance that you will get confirmed. The sequence is Waiting List -> RAC-> Confirmed. Again all this depends on how busy the station is. Always book as early as possible. Atleast two weeks in advance. Hope this helps you.

      Yes to add to this it is summer vacation getting confirmed seats is tough and cancelation are few. Being summer more will opt for AC tickets. It's also college admission time so people will travel across states for admission.
      As advised above only travel if you have RAC tickets where like this time you are atleast assured a seat and can legally board the train. With waiting list ticket you cannot board the train.When you cancel a RAC ticket you will be refunded full amount after deducting nominal charges for admin.Yes we are a country of 1.4 billion what the lady said is correct for long distance trains we book atleast 2 months in advance on popular routes. Else take the flight.Or bus India has sleeper coach overnight bus.

      Yes never travel on a wait listed ticket. If you are in RAC at the time of travel you will not have sleeping berth - only seating, two of you will share a berth as you did now. If you get a confirmed ticket then you will have a full berth. Long journeys only take AC two tier or AC first class- they are comfortable journeys. Never travel non ac sleeper. they are terrible. Try to book premium trains- Rajdhani express, Tejas express, shatabdi express(seating) etc.

    If the rail ticket mentions RAC status (reservation against cancellation), it means that you are provided reserved sitting accomodation initially . On any berth failing vacant due to cancellation or confirmed passengers not turning up , you will be alloted according to priority. People travel on RAC only on urgent basis. You have the option of cancelling your RAC ticket 4 hours prior to boarding the train when the chart is made, and seek refund. Next time, if the ticket is wait listed, do not book, it may or may not get confirmed or go into RAC mode.

    I have watched a lot of your content and was always amazed at the fact that you guys being foreigners managed to book train tickets in India. Even Indians find it confusing and inconvenient on their first try. So, you have all my respect for being courageous enough to try. Really regret the unfortunate situation. But really appreciate you guys for keeping it together and surviving it.
    If possible, I suggest you ask an Indian to book train tickets for you, preferably one of your subscribes over a booking agent. If you let them know you want confirmed tickets (no waiting, no RAC) for a particular journey, they would know the best combination. It will make life much easier.
    Else, as others have already pointed out, please keep the following in mind,
    1. It's easier to get train tickets in the premium segment - Vande Bharat (EC), Express (2AC, 1AC, Vistadome) cause it's less crowded compared to value for money segment - all trains (General, Sleeper, 3AC, AC CC, 2S).
    2. Don't book tickets in train where it's already in waitlist or available tickets are

    RAC is reservation against cancellation. It's not a confirmed ticket but you get to travel to your destination in seating if you don't have any other choice. If you don't want to travel that then on cancellation you will get a full refund. Unless in an emergency we don't prefer to take such a journey especially if it's an overnight journey.
    And train bookings open up 4 months in advance. But its not nexessary that you have to book that way. It all depends on availability of seat reservations at any point in time. You may get confirmed seats even if you book the tickets on same day of travel sometimes.

    You can't book A2 coach. You can enter preferred coach number but it only gets booked if available. Generally, reserved sleeper trains in India have 4 classes.
    First AC/ 1AC- coach number H series.. H1, H2..
    Second AC/ 2AC- coach number A series.. A1, A2..
    Third AC/ 3AC- coach numbers B series.. B1, B2, B3..
    Third AC Economy/ 3E- coach numbers M series.. M1, M2...
    Non-AC sleeper- S series.. S1, S2...
    Normally, once the tickets get sold out, they put you on the waitlist, and during the chart preparation, if any seat gets cancelled, you get a side lower seat shared between 2 passengers which was your case it is called RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation).

H- for First AC, C-for chair car, D- for second sitting(non ac sitting seats), E- Executive chair car, and some others. And yes please dont rely waiting list tickets ,they will never get confirmed at max you will get sharing seat RAC.

    What happened is Train has no First Class because first class has compartments so Second Class coach name is A1 so you did not get upgraded in terms of class but you did book waiting tickets which go through a process of Waiting to RAC(Reservation against Cancellation, 2 people 1 seat) to Reservation. During busy times or on busy trains the they book super early to get a reserved ticket. Be glad you get RAC I travelled in Waiting and you have to literally make bed by laying a sheet on the floor between the bunks and sleep on hard floor. And you pay same price as waiting can go to Reserved if enough people cancel, So you basically pay for getting into a coach and you may get seat if it is available

    Well RAC stands for Reservation Against Cancellation, if there aren't enough cancellations you can still travel but you need to share your seat with someone. That can be a bit tough. You need to book in advance to get confirmed tickets, but if you have no choice, you can book Tatkal or premium Tatkal tickets 2 days before the journey. There are some trains which allow foreigner quotas so you might want to check on those. Actually you missed the scenery by taking a night train. This journey takes you through tunnels and bridges of the Ghat section and you get to see absolutely spectacular terrain. Its not the best summer to be in Bangalore though, its one of the hottest summers in decades. Usually its cool and pleasant even in summers but not this one.

  • @ankitpandey547
    @ankitpandey547 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Sorry for your bad experience but one thing you might want to know for your future train journeys. Usually long distance trains like the one you just took are just one or max two trains between two destinations and can get filled up easily. Train reservation in India opens 120 days in advance, so you can already imagine the kind of rush we have. Tickets on Waitlisted category gets upgraded to RAC like the one you got and you still have to pay the full price. So its not a scam (Well you may call that :)) If you were waitlisted, you wouldn´t even be allowed to travel and your e-ticket would be cancelled automatically. Also dont compare all Indian train experience to the Vande Bharat. They are relatively new, short distance trains with much larger carrying capacity. Long haul trains will always be an adventure. Ask anyone in India who has been train travelling in India ever since they landed on this part of the planet. To be safer next time on long distance train, in case you cant book well in advance (2 weeks is not advance for most long distance trains), try Tatkal ticket or premium Tatkal. Its expensive but you might have better chances of a confirmed tickets. Otherwise Flights are always a better option if you have a connecting ones like in this case for sure. Good Luck and Happy Journeys.

    So this is how the Indian Railways reservation system works -
    1. Confirmed Reservation (CNF) - u get ur assigned coach no and seats when booking
    2. Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) - U share a berth with another person, so ideally, u r only allowed to seat
    3. Waitlisted (W/L) - Not allowed to board a train
    Lets say, u book a waitlisted ticket, then, depending on the previous bookings’ cancellations, u’ll be moved up the queue to RAC - where u can board the train but have to share a seat ( this is what happened in your case).
    If more bookings are cancelled, u move up the queue to Confirmed seats and u get one seat each.
    In all cases, u pay the same amount of money - in case ur ticket remains waitlisted, it’ll get auto-cancelled and you’ll be refunded
    (All above points are applicable when booking are done online, in case bookings are done over the counter, refund and cancellation rules differ free r slightly)
    Also, First AC is the highest class in Indian Rail and the coaches start with a prefix HA e.g. HA1.
    Then comes AC 2 Tier, coaches prefixed with A (A1,A2 and so on)
    and then AC 3 Tier, prefixed with B ( B1,B2 etc.)

    if you are a traveler , first try normal ticket if it is an RAC ticket avoid it ,unless you need to travel urgently . but if you want a sure ticket as a traveler on important train routs , then ask for TATCAL ticket , Tatkal meaning ticket on urgent basis as you are a spontaneous traveler .you need to try any of these options and mqake sure they are confirmed tickets . not RAC status nor WAITING LIST (WL) status . if you dont get any confirmed tickets ,try a alternative train going to the same destination .

    @AryanRaj-ib5oi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You guys should have gotten a confirmed ticket. You were travelling on an RAC one. It's always trouble cuz you have to share a single seat with someone else. RAC is just to make sure you get a seat on the train. And also, you are in the AC Second Class. A1,A2,A3... all are of the same class. The AC First Class is numbered H1,H2... Third AC Class is B1,B2,B3....

    So, here's some Indian rail travel 101 for you 😊
    Most daily commuter long distrance (8-10hrs+) trains get booked way in advance. Of course, as a tourist, you can't plan all your ticket needs. In such cases, when you see a train is waitlisted (W/L) for a given date, opt for TATKAL scheme, which allows you to get a confirmed ticket 24hrs/1-day before travel. And of course at a premium or 2x normal price. Always, look out for ticket availability status while booking, if it already shows as 'RAC' or 'W/L', you are better off going for TATKAL tickets just so that you avoid all this hassle you experienced.
    Now, most overnight (8-10hrs+ journey) have 4 types of classes available for booking, listing them in descending order of most premium to basic:
    First A/C - 1A (Premium) {coach code 'H' | eg. H1 -or- HA1}
    Two Tier A/C - 2A (High) [Recommended for most trains] {coach code 'A' | eg. A1, A2}
    Three Tier A/C - 3A (Mid) {coach code 'B' | eg. B1, B2}
    Sleeper non-A/C - SL (Basic) {coach code 'S' | eg. S1, S2}
    Only some trains have a pantry coach where in you can prebook your meals or directly order from. On trains without this facility, you can buy food/snacks from major railways stations, order online (Dominos, Railofy, IRCTC e-catering) or buy from onboard vendors. Note of caution on the last option, quality or taste might not be great always.
    Vande Bharath trains currently do not have overnight service on any routes, these are meant for shorter journeys (under 8hrs) one-way, with least number of stops, higher speed, higher priority & top-end coach experience. So would be wise not to compare this with any other trains, simply because these cater to extremely different needs.
    Hope this helps 😊 Happy exploring India 🙌🏼

    This is normal, you were in waiting list since you only booked 2 weeks back instead of a month back. Durung the chat preparation the your waiting list probably convertrf to RAC and not confirmed. The process is waiting list-->RAC--> CONFIRMED.
    If the train is empty while booking, you could directly get confirmed.
    RAC is meant to share 2 seats and for those people who dont mind seating but would like to reach the destination since they have no other options.

    @sydwrites 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Look for a local ticket booking agent, they can book your tickets in Tatkal quota (a day before the train departure).
    They also know hacks such as booking from another nearby station (as every station has a specific number of alloted seats, or physical booking from walkin counter. So its best u pay a couple of hundreds extra for his service and get a confirm ticket. RAC (the one you had) ticket sucks.

    Some suggestions to dear Zigwi Brothers.
    Whenever you are in any situation ,please talk to your about passengers. And try to get proper information.
    Sometimes in India we have practical solutions than bookish rules. In Indian Language we call it Jugad.
    Also try to meet the authorities like TC and get a proper information and solutions.
    Talking to to beside passengers can hand you a lot of helpful information.Also we Indian people are always on our toes to help other.
    So please don't hesitate to ask help and information from your naghbour buddy.

    Because of the demand supply gap, there is a system of travel 2 in one seat because of emergency. So from 'waiting list' there are chances to get RAC before its 'confirmed'. So you have to check the ticket if you want to travel with RAC.

    you can get ticket 1 day before at 10 am via premium tatkal ticket system, it will cost you 1k rs more , but for that i would recommend someone who usually travel by train frequently or by travel agent but they will again charge you 500 rs for their service , cus the tickets are limited and you have to be fast when filling up the form . I usually travel like that from Mumbai to Kolkata or viceversa

    By the way A1 and A2 are both Second Class AC. You did not get an upgrade when you went from A2 to A1. First AC class would most likely have coach named H1.

      You don't need to book 4 months in advance necessarily. You can book the day before in something called Tatkal that costs a bit more but you can get place on the train for last minute travelers. It is called First Come First Serve for non-Tatkal.

    Since you guys booked relatively late(because of school holidays), you were probably on waiting list. Then you probably got upgraded to a RAC (Reservation against cancellation). With RAC ticket you can board the train but will have to share the seat just like you did. Had it been a Waiting list ticket you wouldn't be allowed to board but would also have got the refund. The next time take a train only if you get a confirmed seat. If you are in urgency, you can try to book a tatkal ticket which normally opens just a day before the departure. Even with a tatkal ticket you get confirmed seats

    14hours without a bed is hard and also so very boring when you are stuck in one place. i feel for you all. You guys are still young so you can endure it. i wonder how it happens that you didn't get two separate beds? I have never traveled by train in India when i visited as i was there for only two weeks, as i had to get back to my job. We don't get much vacation here in the US.
    It is difficult to sleep on a train as it shakes a lot and wakes you up all the time, very tiring.
    I took a 12hour train across the US in a reclining seat like a plane. The advantage with trains in the US is that the trains don't have as many passengers, so you can roam around to the other carriages and sleep in different seats. They also have the observation deck, a carriage with windows in the ceiling, and with very comfortable seats which is where i was sleeping watching the stars. i just remember it being so boring!!! I just couldn't wait to get off the train as it shook all the time and the constant noise, i couldn't not get a proper sleep. I am a light sleeper so every time the train stopped on the way, i woke up.
    i too, was very exhausted at the end and I just wanted a nice quiet bed to go to sleep for a long time. That is why i prefer flying, and sometimes it is just a little more for the fare, especially on long journeys. It is cheap on short journeys. In India the ac luxury carriages are expensive and almost close to an airline ticket, but when you travel like a local and take all the other non ac ticket types, than it is extremely cheap! And the cheapest class is dirt cheap which is how the poor travel. It is a huge price drop, which is how it should be.
    I am dreading flying from the US to India as they have 18 to 19 hours direct flights to India. It is grueling as you have to sit the whole time. They don't allow you to get up execpt to go to use the bathroom. It is very difficult to sleep with the noise of the plane and people and with the lights of my neighbors constantly going on and off. I find the noise of the plane the worst!!

    Bro it’s your mistake , I think you guys booked RAC tickets , this a different type of booking that indian railways offer to manage crowd in this railway keep some seats separate specially for RAC after the normal tickets gets sold completely then railways offer this and in this you have to share your seat with another person that means you can just sit and if you’re lucky you can get whole seat if someone cancels their normal ticket , that’s why that upper guy had whole seat because he booked normal ticket and you guys booked RAC , so take care of this while booking next time , you can also get ticket in TATKAL , this booking starts 24 hours before the train departure in this you get full seat by giving some extra money

    Traveling by cab will be more exciting than traveling like this by train.
    Find a nice cab driver who can drive long distance.
    Traveling by cab while taking breaks in between is much more comfortable than traveling by train in such circumstances.
