Relax to the natural sounds of sound of over 100 beluga whales in Churchill River, Manitoba, Canada. Use this sound as a background ambience for studying, working, meditation, restorative exercises, or relaxation. All sounds and video are the original recordings and property of Listening To Earth and are the native sounds of this place. No sounds have been added.
Sound is the primary method of communication for many marine species. In an environment where visibility isn’t always clear, it’s the perfect communication tool.
Belugas and whales use sound to navigate, find mates, avoid predators, keep in contact with the pod, and to find food. Because sound travels faster in water than on land, whales can communicate over extraordinary distances. Unfortunately, noise pollution from shipping traffic, seismic blasting, and sonar can mask auditory communication and even cause hearing damage.
Imagine you are trying to talk to your family in the kitchen about dinner, but there is a loud engine in the room making it near impossible to hear what they are saying. In the same way you can't hear your family, whales can struggle to hear theirs. Our noise pollution makes it harder for them to communicate, to find food, and to hear predators coming.
Fortunately, there are noise mitigation technologies that exist and more are being developed. We just have to push our governments to enact policies making the use of such technologies mandatory! The results would be immediate. Once a source of noise is eliminated, so too is the noise.
