Yeah, it was made by Rob Hubbard, who's more or less agreed upon by the entire community to make awesome computer game tunes. So I dunno what Mark's deal is.
I really, REALLY love the music on this game, and that, alone, is the reason I never played so much Road Rash 2 and 3...the music here is FAR catchy, "riffy" and thrilling. That sad, I agree that, unfortunately, it's poor produced...
Road Rash is my favorite of the three on Genesis. However, the best one is probably the **Sega CD version** because it combined the music (such as Soundgarden), FMVs, and menus from the Playstation RR but the gameplay of RR 1-3. Best of both worlds!
Awesome review! I love and played all the Road Rash on my Genesis as a kid. I remember playing this more than any other Genesis game on SEGA Channel. Anyone remember SEGA Channel? That was the future then. Anyway, this series does deserve a comeback, as Mark suggested. Skitchin was another great game. It was just like Road Rash, but you're a skateboarder and can skitch the back of cars.
glad you listened to me, Mark, FINALLY.!!!! WHEEE. This game will always remail one of my favorites on the sega genesis. would like to see a review of toe jam and earl. if you don't have a copy it's on the virtual console.
One of my all time favorite games. I spent thousands of hours playing RR and RR2 with my brother in hot seat. I wish someone rebooted the franchise with next gen graphics. Keep up the great work Mark! Greetings from Brazil!
The musical sounds really are soothing ~ I mean that almost mechanical-type musical noise was something I heard so much of when I was younger that I think it has a calming effect on me now!! XD
This is one kick ass game. I am trying to track down a cart of this game and Road Rash 2. I have Road Rash 3D for the Play Station. Great review as always Mark!
My dad would always play this game and he was really good at it. Since the Megadrive was in my bedroom he would come in then write the passwords on the wall next to the TV. Good times.
I usually agree with Mark, but I disagree about the sound. Road Rash got my blood pumping when I first put it into my Genesis. This game IS THE REASON I bought my genesis when I was 14 years old. Also, Road Rash 2 improves in the fact that you can ACTUALLY knock down the cops. The original road rash does not allow you to do that. Also,Road Rash 2 has a split screen, which was just ok...
Missed this game, where you run over bikers running to their bike, stop with someone under your bike, run over people standing around the finishing line, standing infront of someone bike, preventing them from starting off... punching the person next to you once the game starts...
I got Road Rash 1 and 2 just recently. They're both surprisingly fun. At first I thought the sound was bad, but then it grew on me. The music in Road Rash 1 is actually pretty awesome, better than RR2 I think. RR2's music just doesn't seem as lively or well written. I also prefer the setting of the first game. It makes more sense that this gang of nutjob bikers is in a localized area around California. It's easier to get immersed into that. When they try to have the punk bikers jumping all over America or the world like in the later games, it's harder to suspend disbelief and doesn't add anything to the game. RR2 does add some nice cutscenes though.
this review completely reminded me of the 2-3 years i wasted playing this and rock'n'roll racing. when are we gonna see the rock'n'roll racing review? that game was the raddest.
I don't know of any other motorcycle game, where the riders are seen running to their crashed bike. LOL Modern game developers should start adding this animation to EVERY motorcycle game. It's BRILLIANT.
I loved the music for Road Rash, well mainly the second one, but anyway the faces in this game are funny. They look more Japanese styled than the ones seen in the domestic versions anyway.
"After being attacked by monster, i no longer see the color of time." hahaha if thats what they really said this game would be complete. If they made this game nowadays they woukd have to add a feature to chainsaw someone then call them a noob
Road Rash II gives you the ability to knock cops off bikes. It also has better punch sounds and a kick sound (Road Rash 1 just has the bike clunk sound). It's a win for RR2, just.
Based on this, i think you'll like Motorstorm for the PS3. Granted, you can't hit people with weapons, but you can punch them off if your on an bike or ATV. And you can drive through certain things to make shortcuts/destroy your opponents.
You’re not supposed to attack Natasha! That’s why she looks so pissed off at you in the cutscenes here, because you attacked her when you aren’t supposed to.
I love this game a lot. I particularly liked how the AI characters would remember if you beat them up last race and would immediately try to cream you when they saw you next race. Natasha is your love interest, but gets really pissy if you smack her off her bike. Great fun, nothing more satisfying than kicking a fellow biker into the path of a car...
Don’t hit Natasha! She gives you helpful information, and if you hit her (constantly?) she will become bitter towards you and won’t give you any more help, which is why her facial expression is more pissed off looking early on in the review.
Mark, I've ownd Road Rash 1 for as long as I can remember. It was an amazing game. Later in my life, I bought the newest road rash for playstation 1. And it was ruined. Trust me, it was a good thing that Road Rash died when it did.
IIRC, the big difference between RR1 and RR2 is that RR2 has a 2 player split screen mode (well, at the time, split screen was the only multiplayer mode...)
I've got to agree with NoMac90. I actually like the soundtrack of Road Rash. I'll admit that it isn't smooth, but I don't see how you can stand to play with just the sound effects.
The sound isn't a high point? Road Rash's music is one of the biggest things I like about the game (especially Pacific Coast and Palm Desert).
Calham64 totally agree with you. the music rocks and brings back memories.
Yeah, it was made by Rob Hubbard, who's more or less agreed upon by the entire community to make awesome computer game tunes. So I dunno what Mark's deal is.
Copious Doinks LLC. The music in the third game was by Don Veca.
This music is awesome! Mark disappoints me.
"they hit perfection with this game"
hell yeah!
I really, REALLY love the music on this game, and that, alone, is the reason I never played so much Road Rash 2 and 3...the music here is FAR catchy, "riffy" and thrilling. That sad, I agree that, unfortunately, it's poor produced...
Title screen music is ultra badass! Great game and the sequels are even better!
one of my favorite games of all time.. road rash 2 and 3 are great too.
I,m playing road rash 2 and the music is great love Hawaii stage
Road Rash is my favorite of the three on Genesis. However, the best one is probably the **Sega CD version** because it combined the music (such as Soundgarden), FMVs, and menus from the Playstation RR but the gameplay of RR 1-3. Best of both worlds!
lol, I made sure poor Rude Boy never got to get past the starting line.
FINALLY YOU REVIEWED IT. I requested this years ago! I liked the music TBH. The Pacific Coast one in particular.
glad you listened to me, Mark, FINALLY.!!!!
Holy shit, this was my favourite game when I was a kid. Played it for hours on end!
3:35 That looks like something right out of Mad Max.
"Remember him when you look at the night sky."
Where would this channel be without Mohammed from Qatar. Big up Mo!
The musical sounds really are soothing ~ I mean that almost mechanical-type musical noise was something I heard so much of when I was younger that I think it has a calming effect on me now!! XD
I love the sound effects when you run the guy over.
This is one kick ass game. I am trying to track down a cart of this game and Road Rash 2. I have Road Rash 3D for the Play Station. Great review as always Mark!
I love the music in this series!!
This is a great game on the 3DO.
I love the high speed, big-air, and spectacular crashes.
just purchased NHL 91 on sega genesis for $4.99 in mint at a new local retro gaming store. EPIC score. pause menu with bloody guy laying on ice...win
I remember this game, as well as the sequels. Great series.
I loved this game as a kid. I remember always trying to get the bike called "firecracker" which was one of the fasted bikes in the game.
There must be a vuvuzela stuck to the driver's face. That's what it sounds like XD. Great review as usual!
Just put it in my megadrive and been playing for two hours. It’s still amazing.
My dad would always play this game and he was really good at it. Since the Megadrive was in my bedroom he would come in then write the passwords on the wall next to the TV. Good times.
@ScrewAttackEurope
Wasn't Out run the first?
I usually agree with Mark, but I disagree about the sound. Road Rash got my blood pumping when I first put it into my Genesis. This game IS THE REASON I bought my genesis when I was 14 years old. ahh! i used to love this game when i was a kid :D
Thanks CGR!
@shaden489 the one that came with the poster?
I've been waiting for this review! Nice!
It's almost tempting to mail you the 3D0 version of the game. Do you guys have a 3D0 in the CGR underwater HQ?
LOL Mohammad donates every game, I swear. You've got to have him on the show one day.
Missed this game, where you run over bikers running to their bike, stop with someone under your bike, run over people standing around the finishing line, standing infront of someone bike, preventing them from starting off... punching the person next to you once the game starts...
I prefer understated asides to screaming and mugging like James Rolfe or Doug Walker any day. Those translations were gold.
lol awesome review man, this game is a real classic, it brings back memories :)
I got Road Rash 1 and 2 just recently. They're both surprisingly fun.
At first I thought the sound was bad, but then it grew on me. The music in Road Rash 1 is actually pretty awesome, better than RR2 I think. RR2's music just doesn't seem as lively or well written.

RR2 does add some nice cutscenes though.
Video doesn't work for me...is it down? All of the other ones seem to work...
MORE ROAD RASH GAMES!!! Time for a new version.
Excerrent Engrish transration! Who knew, cement drying in November brings out my true feelings for greater justice!?!
CGR, best channel on the tube by FAR!
this review completely reminded me of the 2-3 years i wasted playing this and rock'n'roll racing. when are we gonna see the rock'n'roll racing review? that game was the raddest.
@shaurz I think this is the first ever racing game to have incline hills, at least on console.
Mark, can you review the Vectrex version??
I don't know of any other motorcycle game, where the riders are seen running to their crashed bike. LOL Modern game developers should start adding this animation to EVERY motorcycle game. It's BRILLIANT.
I have this game it was also available in the UK... it is still awesome
man i remember this game for the pc best classic game ever. Never understood the clips when to finish the race or crash and lose
The Amiga 500 version of this game was amazingly smooth and the music was very very good. Spent many an hour here.
How dare you talk shit on Rob Hubbard's music.
Road Rash, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Sonic, Micro machines, general chaos... those were the days
This was a great genesis game!
is there one for the current gen consuls are did it die out?
@RawHunterX Being that they work mainly off of donations, I would suggest sending a copy of the game you would like reviewed.
@modplanman Gamecube?
Also I really don’t mind the music. It’s so nostalgic to me, I have been singing/humming/whistling along while playing.
Review the latest Road Rash version! Because I don't have these old systems! Didn't they make one for the N64?
I loved the music for Road Rash, well mainly the second one, but anyway the faces in this game are funny. They look more Japanese styled than the ones seen in the domestic versions anyway.
"After being attacked by monster, i no longer see the color of time." hahaha if thats what they really said this game would be complete. If they made this game nowadays they woukd have to add a feature to chainsaw someone then call them a noob

Man, I would love to see a new Road Rash title, they need to bring this series back !
@sparced but there was like at least 2 road rash games for the ps1
i always liked the music of road rash 1 :)
I have played Road Rash on PC, it was really awesome :)
lol at the picaso painting diss. ouch i feel naughty for laughing so hard :P
does it work on megadrive too?
I still love this game, I am going to have to take out my sega nomad and rock it out.
Based on this, i think you'll like Motorstorm for the PS3. Granted, you can't hit people with weapons, but you can punch them off if your on an bike or ATV. And you can drive through certain things to make shortcuts/destroy your opponents.
Had Road Rash on the 3DO. Best version I played imo. Had a more grunge sort of theme to it.
translations were the best, please do more :)
card games on motorcycles?
I love this series. They're making a Xbox Live Arcade Road Rash that's supposed to come out later this year.
this was an awesome title but i still like the ps1 version the best just cause it was a bit more polished cheers bro awesome review thumbs up cya !!!!
Now we need a review of Road Rash 64 (guess which console *cough*).
You’re not supposed to attack Natasha! That’s why she looks so pissed off at you in the cutscenes here, because you attacked her when you aren’t supposed to.
Thank you for your unbiased opinion lol. You spoke nothing but truth
its amazing how fluid the hills are in this. Even most SNES racers didnt do hills this well.. Or because of Mode 7.. they didnt do them at all
Road Rash 64 was badass, I love that game...
Loooooooved this game, sequel was great too.
When the girl took off her helmet, I thought it's blood spilling out :D
I love this game a lot. I particularly liked how the AI characters would remember if you beat them up last race and would immediately try to cream you when they saw you next race. Natasha is your love interest, but gets really pissy if you smack her off her bike.
Great fun, nothing more satisfying than kicking a fellow biker into the path of a car...
Don’t hit Natasha! She gives you helpful information, and if you hit her (constantly?) she will become bitter towards you and won’t give you any more help, which is why her facial expression is more pissed off looking early on in the review.
My favourite mega drive game!
The major improvement with the second installation of the series is the two player feature.
They actually remade this game recently and it's not bad.
My friend John from Japan translating Nataschas words "You could go easy on me, But I won't go easy on you"
Mark, I've ownd Road Rash 1 for as long as I can remember.
It was an amazing game.
Later in my life, I bought the newest road rash for playstation 1.
And it was ruined. Trust me, it was a good thing that Road Rash died when it did.
Mark, you should review Modnation Racers for the PS3, it would make for a great review!
Subscribed. Road rash. Oh yes.
I had Road Rash for playstation..so much fun lol.
Road rash - Jailbreak
imo that was the peak of the series
IIRC, the big difference between RR1 and RR2 is that RR2 has a 2 player split screen mode (well, at the time, split screen was the only multiplayer mode...)
you should really review Devil May Cry series, I would love to hear your opinion on them
I've got to agree with NoMac90. I actually like the soundtrack of Road Rash. I'll admit that it isn't smooth, but I don't see how you can stand to play with just the sound effects.
Excellent game, excellent translations lol!
PLEASE review Road Rash Jailbreak , that was the game i spent hours playing one with and without friends. I would like to see your view on it.
Music on the Game Gear version sounds SOOO much better then the Genesis version!
If they made a new Road Rash today with some good controls and gameplay, it would definitely be big.
You also gotta review Road Rash Jailbreak.
What about Road Rash 3?
