    I had one aunt who was the teacher/headmistress/janitor in the local school and another aunt who was the district nurse, she phoned my mother once and said, “the snow is up to the window sill”, my mother said that’s very deep, she replied, “I’m upstairs”. Most of the mining that went on there, was lead mining, there is a town nearby called, Leadhills, just for info. Your post brought back memories of my youth, thank you.

    ...and one day when I visit that area it won't be raining, blowing a gale, or be hovering around zero (or all three) - seeing the place in the sunshine, as you did, would make a glorious change

    Despite being a lot less mountainous, England's highest pub (Tan Hill Inn in the Yorkshire Dales) is, at 1,732 feet above sea-level, 200 feet higher than the Wanlockhead Inn at 1,531 feet. That's a bit odd, all things considered.

    Very interesting as usual! Wanlockhead has a bit of a running with Flash as they both claim to be the highest village in the UK. Visited Flash a couple of times but Wanlockhead looks a lot more interesting! I'll look forward to seeing the railway video!

    • @thewhitewickmixtape
      @thewhitewickmixtape  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you enjoyed Henry. Flash is 1518ft according to its sign and as you say seems to claim the highest in Britain on its sign, but Wanlockhead is stating on their sign highest in scotland at 1531ft which does in my mathematical (not very good 😂) eye mean its higher. 👍

    Warlock head surpriseingly in the southern uplands not the Highlands near Beatock famous from the WH Audin night mail poem. Lead hills famous for gold mining it is a rather overlooked part of Scotland I am glad you have highlighted it. A wee bit further south is where James Clerk Maxwell came from a mathematician without whom we could not communicate thus.

      @thewhitewickmixtape  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maxwell was a physicist, considered to be as important as Newton and Einstein with his work on electricity, magnetism and light. He is buried at Parton Kirk, the village where I live. Just across the field is the Paddy Line as featured in one of your remotest disused stations. Coincidentally, my wife's parents used to have a cottage at Meadowfoot in Wanlockhead. Didn't Wanlockhead once boast the highest Post Office or post box in Scotland?

    Great story about the sheep! The Scots are always trying to pull someone's leg aren't they? Meanwhile the citizens of Denver Colorado are smiling. They don't call Denver "the mile high city" for giggles. Though there is also another village in Colorado, Leadville, that's even higher up. At least you and Paul didn't need any help breathing at 1500 ft above sea level. Where's the photo of the railroad station?

    Wanlockhead isn't in the Highlands as some commenters have mentioned it's just up past Dumfries shire off the m74 motorway and between sanquar in the lead hills famouse for all mining . .not far from moffat and the highest village in Scotland is tomintoul and I'd recon highest pub would be kings House hotel in at top of glen for not far from the glen for some resort /centre. A82. Hardly an A road try driving a fully loaded hgv articulated on that if you dare .should be a B class road the verges are all broken away so .I can't see how the wanlockhead pub can be the highest as it's in the Dumfries borders the Highlands have some of the highest points above sea level ?

    • @pwhitewick
      @pwhitewick 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tony, I make Tomintoul around 350-360m above sea level. Wanlockhead looks to be around 400-410m.

    Buccleuch = (in English) bucklooch (the ch pronounced as in 'loch'. NOT ch as in 'cheese'). The dead beastie down the well was, quite obviously, a kelpie either on holiday or imported by Picts from the Highlands. However, anyone resident south of Perth, and especially physicians and surgeons from Edinburgh, couldn't be expected to know that.
