There have definitely been a few over the years, but one that sticks out was back in '96. I was part of a tight trio of friends at school, we were always together. On one particular day one of us was absent from school, we thought little of it because we all lived close(ish) and decided we'd give him a knock on the way home from school. When school finished we did just that and his mum answered and shouted up for him as usual, he shouted his response down the stairs which was "I'll come round your house after dinner Rich" Slightly confused we made our way to Rich's house (the closer of our homes) and just hung out waiting and watching Cameron's Aliens for the millionth time probably. When our other friend arrived it turned out his dad had taken him out and bought him a Playstation we weren't from a well off area and he was the first of us to have one which was a big deal! He had stayed home playing it, his mum and dad were getting divorced so it was a py off kinda thing. Anyway he got it with a few games, one of them being Resident Evil. Well, we stayed up playing that game through till the early hours of the morning, just completely immersed in some sort of group trancelike state. He didn't want to talk about his home issues because it was hard and meant he was moving away. So we all just enjoyed each others company and revelled in sharing that gaming experience together. As it turns out, it was the last time we were all together still to this day. Sorry for the long arse comment, but wanted to put it across properly.
Well for me I remember it was a chilly Thursday night in early December back in 97. I popped in a porn vhs, those were really lonely nights. Idk why but something hit me and I stopped the tape mid scene and I hooked up my Super Nintendo and started playing fzero and had pizza and Pepsi. I’ll never forget that night, oh and I did finish myself off in the bathroom that night it was great.
The best gaming night I've had (so far) happened to me just under 2 years ago. About a month or two after my 18th birthday, a friend and I got a whole bunch of beers (Legally I might add, the drinking age is 18 in England) and we decided to play through Shadow of The Colossus in one sitting, starting at maybe 6 or 7pm. We had played it before, but not in a while. I can tell you, if you think some of those colossi are hard, they're eve harder when you're shitfaced drunk. We had waaay too much to drink that night. Eventually we got to the end of the game and once the credits started rolling, my friend and I just hugged each other in a fit of drunken tears. We cried for like 30 minutes and gushed over the experience we just had. It was intense.
I love listening to you two. Especially your stories. I'm not even a video game collector, I stumbled across your page a while back. I now have developed a love for obscure retro games due directly to you. I like the way johnny is so positive and rob is so passionate. Kindest regards from London.
My best night was back in the Winter 2004 with my 10-12 friends playing all night to SmackDown here comes the pain, with multitap. So good. How much i loved elimination Chamber with friends
This was back in college, '99, there was a big screen TV that was locked away in the main resident hall office, but a couple of resident assistants got the keys, and about 5 of us sneaked in there around midnight, and played 007 Goldeneye death match until dawn. That was one of the best game night of my life!
I am 27 years old. This year I had a friend over after the release of the add-on to Dibalo 3, Reaper of Souls. He brought his Notebook and he, my girlfriend and I played that game in our living room for 12 hours straight. It was so great for once playing like it was a classic LAN-party. What was special for us is, that we actually managed to play a game not only for 12 hours without stopping, but also that our older asses where able to stay up until 6 AM in the morning. We felt like 14 again. So great.
There was this movie/video game rental store in Guthrie, Oklahoma where I grew up in 1994-1999ish. It was owned by this black guy named Beaul and soon my best friend and I became friends with the guy as well as the other employees. We would spend a lot of our free time at that store playing games that got ordered and came in early and weren't ready for release. I also learned how to build pc's and basic programming there. Beaul also had an arcade that was attached to the building and every couple of months he would have a shut in with my friends and other people who came in and rented games on Saturday nights. There would be kids anywhere from 10-20 years old that would show up for the night. We'd have a tv and console set up for the all the consoles over the years and he'd open up the arcade with free credits on everything. I always will remember how that place and those people helped mold how I would eventually end up as an adult.
When I was 12 years old I remember my first time playing Metal Gear Solid and at that time I didn't know what the heck was that. So I started to play and enjoyed it very much with my buddy who came to my home with the game. I remember I played till the beginning of Psycho Mantis fight. You know, when he uses the trick with reading your memory card. That was a situation one of a million, because I was telling my friend how awesome is the Symphony of the Night and Psycho Mantis at THAT ideal moment when I was explaining the awesomeness of Castlevania said: "You like playing Castlevania, don't you?". I swear to God I was never so freaked out in my life.
My greatest gaming night or I should say nights lol was when Castlevania SOTN was released on PS1. I bought it the day it came out and rushed to my friend's house to play it. It was the only place I knew where I could stay up all night playing the game since my parents would never allow me to do that. We set up the mattress in front of the tv and played all night until the next morning. We took turns sleeping and didn't stop playing until we completely finished the game. Fucking great memories.
I can’t believe this video is over seven years old now! And I just noticed I made a comment a year ago saying that it’s six years old lol damn time is flying bye
Me and my buddy who was named Matt too (RIP Man) used to do all the Gran Turismo endurance races late at night and it would always be super exciting to see what car you would get for finishing the race. Good times. Also some great nights watching him beat FF7 as well. - Matt
My "Best memories with games" are most often kinda isolated moments within otherwise mundane sessions, but when it comes to "Best gaming nights" I have 3 centered around the same guy. One of those cherished singular nights in gaming was the night I played Metal gear solid 1 for the first time. It was like roughly 4 or 5 years ago. We noticed that he had a burned copy of the game and we just decided to play the game for the sake of it, considering that my friend knew nothing about the game at the time. So, we played for like 6 hours straight. From the opening cinematic all the way to beating Grey fox, we just played non-stop all through the night. It was all blind, too. We did have to look up on the internet what was Meryl's frequency, but other than that, yeah. I also remember like 3 years ago when the guy got his NES for the 1st time. I remember we actually hooked up the NES to the guy's living room instead of his bedroom like usually and played the hell out of some Megaman 3, Mario 1, Duck hunt, Ducktales and Chip & Dale. We hooked it in the living room primarilly because we needed a tube TV for playing Duck hunt, but to me, it was truly magical for the sake of emulating that childhood wonder of playing games in the living room. I always vividly remember that the 1st time I ever played a video game was in my living room on christmas eve and for most of my childhood, the PS1 and 2 would be in the room next to the living room (The "tech room" as it had the house's PC, consoles and the CD player). The last memory I have with that guy in particular is one that is propably the most signifigant one. This pre-dates all those other nights. This shit was like 6 or even 7 years ago. My mom was hosting a party at our house and I decided to take this opportunity to sleep over at his house after years of considering it "kiddy shit". Besides watching Gremlins 1 that night, the friend in particular took interest in the PSP game that I had bought from the store out of impulse (Because I forgot all my games at home); the Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded. He played the fuck out of Super Ghouls and Ghosts on that and that prompted us to start playing his old PS1 games like Rayman 1 again. This holds 2 signifigant points for me. Firstly, it was the day we started visiting frequently again. As well as that, it was the night that got him into gaming. That's what prompted him to buy his Mega Drive and NES. It's what got me buying retro consoles too. As much it pains me to see how fucking glamorous his collection is compared to mine, I am still ever-so-happy that I bought that game all those years ago. Other than that, there have definetly been other highlights. Playing Smash bros and Wild guns while drunk as shit with another friend of mine after a session of watching Jojo's bizarre adventure, the infamous "Day of Tales" when I played Tales of Symphonia with my sister for 10 hours straight and went on to watching alot of those Tales bonus things for another 2 hours, my 2 times doing those 10 hour sessions again alone (1 on Tales of Xillia 1 and the other on Symphonia again). Of course as of this moment, I'm makin' legend for myself. I've been going through an un-forgetable journey over the last month; Playing my first playthrough of Dark souls 1. Holy shit, it's been crazy. I remember innitially hating it, then I fell in love after the Bell Gargoyles, then absolutely loathed it at Blighttown (the worst gaming session of my life) and it's been just escelating higher and higher towards absolute love since then. It's still incomplete, as I haven't gotten much time to play (I've killed two of the four lords and am currently working my way to beat the Four kings), but man, it's been quite the journey with many peaks and valleys.
On another vid you talked about playing RE2 when it first came out. I had a lot of empathy for how you described the experience, like you were describing a place where I had visited... an excellent, awesome place. Another good time was when I played through Tomb Raider 1. That was my first real experience of adventuring through a game. Gaming experiences have actually changed me, its mental and I love it!
You could set it up with cams so we could watch your reactions as well and play games that were both nostalgia to you guys back in the day, multiplayer games of today, and some of the games that you never played for honest reviews as your playing them. You could then capture the footage and splice it together for a TH-cam commentary at a later date as well.
At this year's Magfest I played NBA Jam on a dedicated cabinet with my brother, a man and his son. The man and I were 2 points down with 5 secs on the clock. I managed to shoot a 3 pointer with 1 sec to spare and made it! It was the most fun I ever had playing with strangers. High fives all around.
It was actually somewhat recently. About a year a go, my friend and I we're just drinking and playing through Donkey Kong 2 till the crack of dawn. Another great time was gettin high and playing Resident Evil 5 co-op... even though the game wasn't that good we still had a blast
To add to the RE5: Even though we were really high, we both remember this. After defeating this really fat guy who died on the stairs, we moved on. A few minutes later, we both said "have we seen that guy before?". Turns out we were walking in a loop and kept on passing the fat guy on the stairs. So we then tried a different path, and it lead to the same guy. When you're high, thats pretty mind blowing and pitiful haha -_-
My favorite gaming night was when I was about 7 years old and Silent Hill had just been released for the Playstation and I experienced it for the first time at night with all the lights out and being alone. I went in expecting Resident Evil 2 which had been the only survival horror game I had played at the time which I found to be less horror-focused and more of an action/survival game. Silent Hill was the first game to give me a sense of dread.
2004 Halo 2 came out and was me and like 8 co-workers and we did a LAN party. We even had a dude making Ethernet cables on site. And we had pizza size of a table with About 5 cases 24pack of MGD😉 stacked. Man I miss the old days before XBOX live was big.
I remember, when the first Rock Band came out; a bunch of my friends and I got together, drank some beers and played the hell out of that game, its was such an epic night, we kept it up all the way till the release of the 2nd Rock Band, which was more awesome... Good Times
Halo 3's release. My best friend and I were both freshman in high school when it came out, so his parents picked us both up from school and took us to pick up the game. On the way, they said they were going to be going to a party out of town, but they wouldn't be back till later the next day. So they gave my buddy around $40 for food/stuff for the weekend. Mind you this was also the time of the majesty that was "Mountain Dew Game Fuel". We bought a few cases of Game Fuel, several bags of Doritos, and ordered some pizzas from our favorite pizza joint. He set up his 360 on the big HDTV in their den and we basically stayed there for the whole weekend, only leaving for piss breaks and to run to the corner store for more Mountain Dew. Played through it first on Normal, as we were both really into the Halo story and wanted to experience it, then beat it on Legendary by the end of the weekend. Fantastic game night/weekend. Haven't had anything like that happen in person again yet. Though, if I do have frequent game nights online with friends through Smite or Counter Strike, but it's not really the same as everyone being together in the same room. Still fun though.
+Miccollo Your right, its not. There is just something about pulling up that couch, sitting next to your buds and laughing while you play through a game. Eating junk, drinking junk and in some cases playing junk. It's just that experience of hanging with your friends, and just having a great time.
Less of a night and more of an entire weekend, but when I was in hs, my buddy and I played Mario RPG non-stop from start to finish. We ended up having to take shifts, trying to get a bit of sleep here and there, but man, that was one of the best weekends of my life. Great game, great memories. Thanks for all the nostalgia, HCG!
Best video game night would have to be when my friend brought his ps1 over to my house and showed me resident evil 2 for the first time and playing it all night while buying like 50 tacos and eating them while playing...survival horror has been my favourite genre because of that game.
My favorite gaming night was when my friend Jonathan and I played D and D Heroes on Xbox, we were both about 14 or 15 and just getting into RPGs and this was the first multiplayer RPG we had ever played, also my older sister Corina was hanging out with us. Jonathan kept running ahead and getting all the loot and leaving me to deal with the enemies, and wouldn't even give me the items meant for my character, it took a long time but we finally got to a shop, and we needed equipment bad, Jonathan started buying his items first so I went to the bathroom. When I came back both Jonathan and Corina were giggling, and when I went to buy items I realized that Jonathan gave what little items and gold I had to his character, he sold my items to buy himself the best equipment. Since I had nothing I kept dying, and since there was two of us playing the difficulty was too much for him without me so we had to start over and work together. Jonathan died in 2006 when we were 16, so this is a very special memory to me.
My favorite videogame night was when I got Pokemon Gold (for a 100 Dutch Guilders I remember), and my friend got Pokemon Silver. We stayed up all night playing Pokemon, watching some DBZ and eating pizza's, potato chips, candy. Another great night was when smash bros melee was out and we had a bunch of friends playing. Smash till dawn man, smash till dawn.
My favorite gaming story is of a few of my best friends going to my friends house after highschool graduation. We went to my house to grab a game to play and I grabbed heavy rain and went "My friend gave me this stupid thing, wanna try it out?" And then before we knew it we had played it for a whole day, we didn't sleep until something like 8am and then immediately started playing it again after waking up. There was so much yelling and screaming about decisions and people fucking up at the QTE's, best gaming night ever.
There were so many memorable gaming nights back when me and my brother used to hang out with our friends and sleep over on the weekends in the 90's when we competed in everything from Street Fighter 2 to Tekken. But if I have to pick a game night that stands out, it would have to be actually a later event around late 2002- when I was a senior in HS, when me and my friend used to play Wrestlmania 18 on the Gamecube. One week, we really got into a heated discussion about who was the best in Wrestlemania while on the courtyard in high school. We decided that with other friends present as witnesses, we would schedule a Hell-in-a-cell match with submission victory only that Thursday evening. We spent the entire week talking about it. It's really amazing how seriously we took the game. We used to play Creed as the soundtrack during matches and stuff. Anyway, my friend lived probably 20 minutes away by car, but back then I wasn't driving yet, and I had a crappy little job, but I would either take the bus to his house or actually walk from time to time. His dad would always drop me home. The night of the match, we got everything set up and got our game faces on. He got us plates of his mothers famous and beloved beef and salad with rice and beans along with some soda. We ate like kings. When it actually started, I don't think there was anyone there but us. All our friends were eager to see the anticipated match, and in the end no one showed. We hardly even noticed because it was such a magical evening. It wouldn't have been the same if anyone had showed. We each came out to our favorite Creed song playing in the background. We had our suped up created characters, and we were ready to prove which one was the best. That match lasted probably an hour. A beautiful hour. We slammed each other all over the cage and each held our own. It looked like each one of us almost had an early victory, and then we would battle back to a stand still. After about 45 minutes, it became beautifully clear that we were equals. We didn't let that stop us. It just built a mutual respect. The moves and counters executed really showcased how good we both had gotten in the game. We were real world class. It was like poetry-in-motion. No wasted moves. No sloppy execution. 2 of the best just going at it. Anyone could have won that friggin match. It had so many plot twists. We were both in serious trouble and danger of losing several times. In the end I executed a counter-submission move and after a long struggle, he tapped. The way it played out though, there was no loser. We just sat back in awe at the match smiling from ear to ear all night. We were mad we didn't record it, because it became clear that it couldn't ever be duplicated- and we tried. There was no argument at school the next day. Everyone was asking eagerly what happened and he was a good sport and admitted he lost. That was a euphoric night....... I should make a video because there is even more to the whole time period and experience that I can't write all here.
Great video guy's! some of my best gaming night's were playing PSO on the dreamcast. I would get home about 1:30 am and I'd play online till about 7am. Man was that a great time for me, and for gaming in general. I thought it was the greatest thing ever at the time. Playing with and against people around the world.
Played Manhunt on PS2 back in 2003 with a friend and 2 dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts. By the time I attempted to eat my 8th doughnut, it felt like I was getting stabbed in the stomach...very appropriate considering what we were playing. Terence3KB
i remember my brother and his friend playing FF7 for so long one night, and they were still playing it when I woke up. most of my good game nights like that were when I was still in school its cool that you guys grew up gaming together, and you still game together now! most of my friends from my childhood dont play games anymore
I don't think I have one particular gaming memory that stands out above the rest, but just little stories from all the nights staying up until 4AM playing games with my sister in her room have always been very memorable. I remember we did it so often that we had my moms sleeping schedule down to a science. Her bladder was as precise as any bladder could be. She woke up every morning at 12, 2 and 5 to go to the bathroom - so we were always prepared to hide out during those times of night. I remember one case where my mom came in the room to check on us because it was 2AM and we were still playing video games, my sister hid me under some clothes on her floor (because I was the younger one so I would have been the one to get in trouble) and my mom came in and she didn't notice me. To an 8 year old you feel like you've just outsmarted the devil. I also have fond memories of gaming with my grandfather and uncle, but to a lesser degree. With my uncle, I never really gamed with him. It was just that when I was over my grandparents house and he wasn't playing games he'd let me play his older consoles that he was no longer interested in, but boy, it was always ridiculously exciting for me. Whenever that opportunity to play his games came up I felt like I had just won the lottery. And my grandfather was a great influence on me gaming-wise. He got me into RPG's and he had almost every RPG for the PS1. I would always go to his house and borrow a game, finish it and then trade it out for another one. Playing with him was a bit difficult, though, because he's a really bad back seat gamer.
I have a few great ones but some of my fondest memories were playing through the NES Ninja Gaiden games with my best friend. Just suffering so much but loving every second of it (well the first two games anyways). Drinking tea, losing our minds, figuring out how to beat each level and boss together, great times.
Feeding off each other? It makes me happy just watching you guys act all happy. Damn I love your channel. My favorite videos are the ones where you two just talk about memories, current events, or what have you. Make more, lots more, and the two of you together is definitely quite the experience.
I still rewatch this to this day to cheer me up. The messed up part about the next day is hilarious and reminds me that those days can happen, and that it's ok.
Back around 2002, me and few of my cousins and friends decided to stay over at one of my cousins place. They had a huge basement where we had enough room for everyone to be playing on multiple tvs. Only things i have to say about that night is: Pizza, Halo and 007: Goldeneye N64... Oh and Mario kart 64! It was my first time as a kid staying up all night without even trying and while at having a shit load of fun. The closest i got to have something like that as of late is playing COD:BO Zombies with my drunk friends for most of the night... before shit went to hell with everyone being super drunk.
Me and my best pal playing Grim Fandango... But we need to finish a Cuban Revolution paper for next day. I don't know all the details of what happen in Cuba; but we finally beat that awesome game that night. There.
SoulCalibur 5, me and three of my buddies got a ton of pizzas and spent the whole night on character creation coming up with awesome and hilarious fighters with badass back stories
The best gaming night i remember was staying up until 6 in the morning with my two cousins and best friend playing wcw vs nwo on the n64. This was probably 15 years ago. Im 33 now but i remember it well.
My favorite game night was playing Halo Reach with Lan cables connected to 3 Xbox's cramped in my room, with several good friends of mine on my 15th birthday. Not only was it one of my favorite game nights, but also my favorite birthday celebrations.
My friend and I stayed up all night playing Rampage on NES. It was a blast! We rampaged our way through the world and talked about all sorts of various things.
A few weeks ago a couple of guys and I climbed up onto the roof of our elementary school, which was flat, set up a tv and a gamecube, dangled an extension cord and plugged it in, bought some snacks and drinks, and had an SSBM tournament on the roof all night. We had to leave relatively early though cause the kids started coming XD.
its hard to pick one single night of awesome gaming with friends, but one sticks in my mind, my two best friends stayed at my place, ps2, games, beer, food and the most amazing conversations and not only about video games and then the sun rise with a cigarette.. good times.
Summer of '98. Me and my brother went over to one of our neighbors who went went to school with, stayed up until about 5:15 AM playing WCW vs. nWo World Tour, and probably Goldeneye. I got up around 11:15 that morning, felt great and regretted nothing.
staying up all night playing toy story 2 on the dreamcast as random as that sounds. also remember beating super mario 64 on my birthday around all my friends as they were coming over for my birthday party which made it extra memorable.
Haha yeah so many You Tubers stop and complain about this shit and I can never really hear it. Just keep talking, Im sure the vid will be fine, At least they made it funny =P
At about the same time as your story(around 98) I was busy getting in trouble from my mom for printing a Final Fantasy Tactics Walkthrough. I wasted ALL the expensive ink....She was pissed.
One night that keeps coming to mind was about a week after Halo 2 came out. Four of my friends and I played Halo 2 all night long on two Xboxs connected on a LAN. Definitely not the biggest or most planned out game night, but for some reason it always comes to mind when I think about my favorite gaming night.
One of my most memorable gaming nights was the first time I played Resident Evil on the PS1. 10:00 at night..no one else home..and high off my ass. I was a big pothead back then lol. But man, I wasn't ready for that type of game. Craziness!
I play with my friends online. A few of my favorites was staying up till 6 in the morning and destroying European players in Battlefield. We had been playing like 6 to 8 hours straight. Another time we had an epic 12 vs 12 clan war. What made it special was no guns were ever fired. It was knife only, so so much fun. Plenty of top 100 ranked players made it that much more special. Great memories…
Haha awesome story guys! High 5 for going to work the next day, Rob. I would have just called in sick lol. I remember one night me and a friend were playing Final Fantasy Tactics and we FINALLY beat Weigraf. Hardest boss in the game. Then in excitement we dropped the controller and thought the game froze. None of the buttons were working and we freaked out because we had tried beating him so many times. Ended up that we just unplugged the controller lol. We just about lost out minds haha
When I was about 15, my friends and I stayed up all night playing Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance co-op for the PS2. It was an incredibly addictive game. Me and 2 other friends took turns when one died. One of those friends has passed on. I will never forget that.
my favorite night was not a gaming night, but we did a board game, and after that we did a drinking game, the most of us where so drunk, after that we going out, and where even more drunk, and we said the stupidest things, but it was so fun. i not even know what booard game we played.
I fondly remember a night when i was in 2nd year of apprenticeship of my first job. a buddy of mine slept over at my place and we played NHL 2003 i think it was on PS2 and we went 9-9 to the first overtime, 10-10 to the second overtime and 11-11 to sudden death and with 12 seconds left on the clock i made the 12-11 goal and we were both exhausted and sweaty because that one game of NHL was so intense.. we looked at each other, took a few deep breathes and shook hands on that amazing game. i will never forget this
My favorite gaming night was about 5 years ago playing Tekken 3 and smoking weed alllll night with two of my friends. One of them is a Tekken god and we just took turns playing against him. We won like every 100th round or something like that and each time we just screamed out of happiness.
And im not saying that smoking weed is cool or anything this was just something I did back then and in that night it enhanced the experience sooooo much and we got soooo into it.
My favorite gaming night was Christmas 87. I got my NES for Christmas and Metroid with a few other games. It was 16 hours straight playing Metroid from 2 in the afternoon until 6 in the morning. I finally turned it off when the sun started coming up. I was 14 and was finally doing something that I really wanted to do, playing Atari from 79 up until I got the NES was finally upgraded. I've had some other fun gaming nights but that one sticks out the most since I could say that was probably the night my addiction to gaming was official. Miss those days
Around 1996 I got a loan of my nephew's PS1. There were no memory cards with it, it was just the console, controllers, and one game. That game was the original Tomb Raider. My mate had popped round to see this 'new' console. He eventually went home at 6am the next morning. We had never experienced anything like it. Ever. To this day, no game has ever blown me away as much as that one did at the time. I bought my own PS1 about a week later.
For my friends and I the game is Gauntlet 2 on NES with the four score attachment and anytime we pull that one out, the night becomes incredibly memorable and awesome! One of our favorites.
1994, i was living in Timmins ontario. I was 16 yrs old, found out i was moving to Montreal. My best friend at that time came over to my place with two huge bottles of wine he stole from his mom. We played shining force 2 all night as our last gaming get together. Sadly was never able to get in touch with him since i left. This was my last memory of him, an awsome one at least.
It was summer of 2010 if I remember correctly, a "Fighting Game Night". A bunch of friends gathered and started playing Street Fighter IV, Tekken 6, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Soul Calibur IV among others just to name a few. We started playing around at 18:00 and kept going until 01:30 of the next day, which was the time most of my friends started leaving for their houses. The more the time went through, the less we remained, so around at 05:00 we were just 2 persons. We were bored of just playing games the two of us, so we decided to create custom characters on Soul Calibur IV. We were taking turns, one of us would decide which character we should create and the other would go and look on the internet in order to see the outfit, colors, etc. I don’t remember every character we created, but some examples are: He-Man, Skeletor, Noob Saibot, Scorpion, M. Bison and many more. I think we tried Bravestarr too, but I am not sure. Anyway, around at 08:00, I decided to leave for my house with the morning bus. But right that time, out of nowhere, another friend, totally irrelevant with all of the above, just happened to phone call me. He was stuck on a boss on “Lost Odyssey” and needed my help, as I was a Final Fantasy veteran and had finished every FF up to X. Long story short, I took the bus, I skipped my house and went straight to that other friend. We played Lost Odyssey for a few hours, and then we switched to other games. I think we finished playing around at 13:00, when I finally left and went to sleep. As you can tell, I was a huge fan of the old FFs, so I really wanted if not to play, then at least see the Lost Odyssey. I had listened so much about, but I couldn’t afford a new console in order to play it. It was a great night, followed by a great morning. For the history, if I remember correctly, the boss he was stuck was an undead creature, so you had to use healing items to kill it. That’s the reason he called me.
Rob, you said it so perfectly in the first minute. Epic nights can't be manufactured. They just sort of happen. You know when it's magic. My old gaming crew and I always had those magical gaming nights back in the late '80s to mid '90s. Anyway, one of my most favorite nights was when my Texas cousins and their Canada cousins slept over in 2002 during the summer time. There like were like 8 of us, and we played PS1 Puzzle Fighter, loser passes the controller. We seriously played it for like 3 hours non-stop, and the next morning I woke up to the sounds of Chun-Li's GOMEN NE? It was 7:30 AM, and the girls had already fired the game back up. Epic times
In my second year of uni, I had a friend over to my accommodation with his desktop PC in tow, we hooked up a LAN and spent literally 24 hours playing System Shock 2 co-op, from start to end. Absolutely amazing experience.
My favorite gaming memory was back in college. A good friend and I were at study hall right behind his dorm. It was open 24/7 so we were there all night cramming for a test later that week. Every few hours, we would take a break go to his dorm and play Tekken Tag Tournament. He introduced me to Tekken and the Resident Evil series. He and I played co-op in Resident Evil 5. It was so much fun! Unfortunately, he moved to NY this month for a job and won't see him for a while unless he comes down to visit his family.
My best gaming night was the one after the day I broke my left arm. lol I'm serious! You see I had this really great friend called Gabriel back in my hometown, and we used to play videogames together very often. He was feeling bad about me not being able to play games because I couldn't move my left hand or my arm would hurt, so he decided we could play singleplayer games but he would control the left side of the controller and I would control the right side! It was very difficult to play like that, but it was really fun. We had a great time that night playing games like Driver 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3 (imagine how well that went!) and Resident Evil Director's Cut, which was a lot less scary than it normally was to us because we couldn't take anything seriously that night :) oh man thanks for making this video guys, it brought back this fantastic memory!
I remember playing The Sims 2 on PS2 for hours and pulling all nighters with my old mate, Shawn. The split screen was amazing and the game just makes time fly.
I gotta' say two of my favourite video game nights. The first was with a few old friends where his parents had gone away for the weekend and he decided to throw a party! All good, about 30-40 people drinking, eating food having a good time then my friend turns on the PS2 with Capcom vs SNK 2 and me and another guy at the party stayed up all night playing and drinking and by the morning we had around 600 matches between us! Another amazing game night(s) was when Final Fantasy XIV ARR got released on the PS3. Me and a friend stayed up for THREE DAYS playing the game! So epic! I'm a father too! lol
There have definitely been a few over the years, but one that sticks out was back in '96.
I was part of a tight trio of friends at school, we were always together. On one particular day one of us was absent from school, we thought little of it because we all lived close(ish) and decided we'd give him a knock on the way home from school.
When school finished we did just that and his mum answered and shouted up for him as usual, he shouted his response down the stairs which was "I'll come round your house after dinner Rich"
Slightly confused we made our way to Rich's house (the closer of our homes) and just hung out waiting and watching Cameron's Aliens for the millionth time probably.
Darren Draper Thank you for the sharing. I liked the story!
+Darren Draper That's a great story. Those are good memories to hang on to.
What a story, Mark
Well for me I remember it was a chilly Thursday night in early December back in 97. I popped in a porn vhs, those were really lonely nights. Idk why but something hit me and I stopped the tape mid scene and I hooked up my Super Nintendo and started playing fzero and had pizza and Pepsi. I’ll never forget that night, oh and I did finish myself off in the bathroom that night it was great.
Damn, this made me cry a little.
Nope. Still 18 years old to drink alcohol.

Musta been really awkward the next day
One of the best nights was my best friend and I playing through the Halo 2 campaign all night long back in high school.
Exactly what I did! First time I ever played Halo 2, I rented it with my bud and we beat it at like 3:00 in the morning In 6 hours. lol
Was Beaul a black guy?
It's the type of special things that just don't happen anymore. It was a 90's underground format...
This is my favorite video of yours, solely for "Thank you daddy, thank you!" i laugh so hard every damn time
When I was 12 years old I remember my first time playing Metal Gear Solid and at that time I didn't know what the heck was that.
Staying up all night playing secret of mana co-op, we wound up passing out around 3 in the morning and woke up to the game still running.
- Matt
I like that you left in the little outtake with the leaf blower.
Whenever I think about 1998 in gaming I instantly think
Resident evil 2
Metal gear solid
Tomb raider 2
Man I like to listen and watch your memories ;-)
On another vid you talked about playing RE2 when it first came out. I had a lot of empathy for how you described the experience, like you were describing a place where I had visited... an excellent, awesome place.
Another good time was when I played through Tomb Raider 1. That was my first real experience of adventuring through a game. Gaming experiences have actually changed me, its mental and I love it!
You guys need to do a live stream on twitch!!!
You could set it up with cams so we could watch your reactions as well and play games that were both nostalgia to you guys back in the day, multiplayer games of today, and some of the games that you never played for honest reviews as your playing them. You could then capture the footage and splice it together for a TH-cam commentary at a later date as well.
Me and my Dad had a great time completing Tekken 3 in one night together, thanks for bringing those memories back Johnny!
You two are a treat to listen/ watch! keep up the great work!
Dude how cool it is to have a friend like Rob Man. I know where he is coming from, I am so on that frequency of existence with you guys.
This was one of the funniest episodes yet! Great stuff as always guys :D
3:33 JEEZ LOUISE WHERE'S YOUR PREORDER SLIP?!?!?
in Germany, me and my friend we were playing Zelda 3 all night long in December 92 ....
good Times !!
of all the videos hes made with rob this is still the one i come back to the most and love cuz its the definition of best friends in a video
2004 Halo 2 came out and was me and like 8 co-workers and we did a LAN party. We even had a dude making Ethernet cables on site. And we had pizza size of a table with About 5 cases 24pack of MGD😉 stacked. Man I miss the old days before XBOX live was big.
Xmod's Gaming i miss lan partys. Kinda makes me want to throw one with the old crew.
You guys would be blast to hang out with! Thanks for the personal stories, as they are always entertaining to hear. Cheers from USA Massachusetts!
I love coming back to these videos years later when I need a bit of a pick me up. 😁
When I was young a friend and I played n.w.o. vs n.w.a. Played it all night long. Beat the game and unocked everything, I so miss Nintendo 64
There was so much yelling and screaming about decisions and people fucking up at the QTE's, best gaming night ever.
i really love your guys videos. you have the best chemistry and its a real pleasure to watch
I've watched this so many times because of you and rob... it reminds me of my best friends gaming.
Played Manhunt on PS2 back in 2003 with a friend and 2 dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts. By the time I attempted to eat my 8th doughnut, it felt like I was getting stabbed in the stomach...very appropriate considering what we were playing.
Terence3KB
i remember my brother and his friend playing FF7 for so long one night, and they were still playing it when I woke up. most of my good game nights like that were when I was still in school
its cool that you guys grew up gaming together, and you still game together now! most of my friends from my childhood dont play games anymore
Its an episode with a little outtake rolled into one. Haha awesome guys! :D
I definitely feed off the energy and happiness that you two radiate.
1998, Friends house, Super Smash Brothers, 15 hours straight.
That's all I can remember.
Feeding off each other? It makes me happy just watching you guys act all happy. Damn I love your channel. My favorite videos are the ones where you two just talk about memories, current events, or what have you.
Make more, lots more, and the two of you together is definitely quite the experience.
Pretty sure that's the best Johnny/Rob intro out of all HCG videos haha Great story man!
One of my favourite videos in recent memory. I like when you guys leave the bullshit in; makes me laugh.
There.
I wanna hang out with Johnny and Rob when they're drunk. Play a video game like Mario kart, that'd be hilarious
SoulCalibur 5, me and three of my buddies got a ton of pizzas and spent the whole night on character creation coming up with awesome and hilarious fighters with badass back stories
my best memory is when mortal kombat came out for the snes,i played it soo much while listening to alice in chains dirt album over and over
My favorite gaming night was never because i don't have any friends. I am going to go cry in the corner now.
Lol
CP Patera thats kinda really badass!
its hard to pick one single night of awesome gaming with friends, but one sticks in my mind, my two best friends stayed at my place, ps2, games, beer, food and the most amazing conversations and not only about video games and then the sun rise with a cigarette.. good times.
Summer of '98. Me and my brother went over to one of our neighbors who went went to school with, stayed up until about 5:15 AM playing WCW vs. nWo World Tour, and probably Goldeneye. I got up around 11:15 that morning, felt great and regretted nothing.
Unintentional game nights are always the most memorable ones. Thanks for sharing this one!
staying up all night playing toy story 2 on the dreamcast as random as that sounds. also remember beating super mario 64 on my birthday around all my friends as they were coming over for my birthday party which made it extra memorable.
It doesn't come up on audio. But this was very funny.
The mic really only pics up our voices but trust us! it was realllly loud out the window, damn old woman!
Haha yeah so many You Tubers stop and complain about this shit and I can never really hear it. Just keep talking, Im sure the vid will be fine,
At least they made it funny =P
HappyConsoleGamer take it easy on old people we are getting on one day we will be old and trying to hold a pad. Thats if it's not all VR by then.
I heard it.
Game Sack Yea Game Sack!
At about the same time as your story(around 98) I was busy getting in trouble from my mom for printing a Final Fantasy Tactics Walkthrough. I wasted ALL the expensive ink....She was pissed.
Please do a video of all the banter you've edited out. That shit was hilarious. There has to be more.
As always, you guys tell amazing stories. My favorite gaming nights are usually with my two best friends in which we play mame all day.
"Playing Tekken and drinking all night" was definitely A LOT of nights back in the day lol
The chemistry here is awesome all I do is cheese watching you guys
Thank you datty!
Did you read this, Johnny?

Smoking weed IS cool
Space Channel 5. Beat it on my first night playing it while my friend was passed out next to me lol
So epic!
I'm a father too! lol
I still have one of those nights recorded on my cell all over silent hill. Man good times lol
Really enjoyed this video! More of this stories please!
