Could you please clarify the maximum number of packets a device can store for transmission if devices around are out of range? and whether these packets are subject to be deleted after a set period of time?

Packets are automatically deleted after 24 hours. Each device can store up to 255 packets. A complete message is typically comprised of 3 packets, a header, a payload, and a signature. If the message is large, it may contain multiple payload packets. If the packet storage becomes full, the oldest ones start getting deleted first.
Complete messages are stored in a different area from packets, as they can be saved as long as the user wants and don't expire. Sizes of messages may vary, but typically you would be able to store about 100 messages, before the oldest start getting replaced by newer ones.
