MOUNT ASSINIBOINE HIKE | Sunshine Village To Mount Shark

  • Our Mount Assiniboine hike lasted 5 days. We hiked from Sunshine Village in Banff National Park To Mount Shark Trailhead, traversing the beautiful landscapes of Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park. The backpacking trek was well-worth the effort as we got to see Assiniboine from every angle. The park is filled with sparkling glacial lakes, impressive glaciers, rugged mountain peaks, and awe-inspiring alpine meadows. Hiking Mount Assiniboine was a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. There are no roads that traverse this provincial park near Banff, which means that it can only be accessed by hiking trails (or by helicopter... which is very expensive!). This limited accessibility is what makes this place truly untouched.
    The Mount Assiniboine hike can be completed in 3 days if you hike straight through the area. However, that isn't recommended. We spent 5 days in the area and used these 2 'extra' days to hike around Lake Magog and Assiniboine itself. On one day we hiked to the most iconic viewpoints in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park: the Niblet, Nublet, and Nub Peak. On the other day, we hiked Wonder Peak, a less-explored route! We were lucky to have two crystal clear sunny days to see Mount Assiniboine in its full glory. In this video, we explain how to hike to Mount Assiniboine, what to pack, which routes we took, and show all the epic views along the way.

    Great video! As someone who is thinking of doing this summer 2021, I really liked how well you described your itinerary. I got a couple questions still: Was this done in late July? How were the stars? Did all of your campsites have bearboxes? Thanks!

      Hi Nick! Thanks for watching. We loved the trip to Assiniboine. One of our favorite multi-day hikes ever! We did the hike at the end of July. We luckily caught great weather for the most part, so the stars were incredibly clear. Yes, all of the campsites had bear boxes! So there was no need to bring rope to hang up our food

    Hoping to trail run this later in the summer - if someone only has time for one of the side trips (Nub or Wonder Peak), which would you suggest? Are they similar in added length/elevation? Thanks!

    • @worldwildhearts
      @worldwildhearts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to see the classic view of Assiniboine and those 2 lakes below it, then we would suggest nub peak. It’s also shorter in distance than wonder peak of leaving from Assiniboine campground. Wonder peak is a bit more of a trek, but more worth it if you want less people on the trail and a more unique view of the backside of Assiniboine. You also see a lot more lakes from the top of that one, but it is slightly more dangerous than Nub when you get to the top, so not super ideal for running once you’re up there

      Let me ask one thing.
      One day hiking is possible from Magog lake to Mt. Shark parking lot?

    • @worldwildhearts
      @worldwildhearts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it’s possible! It’s definitely hard because it’s very long in distance. But the elevation gain is pretty minimal as you’re mostly coming down so that makes it doable. Took us 8 hours of hiking!

    We are planning to this in summer but planning as an out and back since we dont have an option to shuttle do you recommend starting at Mount Shark or Sunshine route? Which one did you like better/has better views?

    • @worldwildhearts
      @worldwildhearts  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re going to do it as an out-and-back, we definitely recommend doing it from the Sunshine parking lot. Much better views from that direction. Keep in mind that it’s a super super long hike if you do it as an out-and-back. We wouldn’t recommend it personally, but if it’s your only option, then be prepared for the conditions and bring tons of food / water / essential gear!

      Probably Nub Peak as it’s a little easier! Wonder peak is epic on a good day (trail is a bit sketchy if wet or windy) but it’s also very long! Nub peak has more people though... whereas we had wonder peak all to ourselves

    Thank you so much all the great info on your website and for the amazing video(s). I have just subscribed. As you did not camp at any of the Banff National Park campsites did you have to pay a fee or buy a permit to hike in the park? I have reserved 1 night at Og Lake and 3 nights at Lake Magog and was wondering if I need to register with Parks Canada or pay any fees or buy a permit to hike through Banff National Park.

    • @worldwildhearts
      @worldwildhearts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for subscribing! Glad you find the videos and articles useful 😊 we did not need to pay a fee or buy a permit to hike in the park when we did it. Not sure if that has changed now because of covid times right now though. We needed the campsites booked next to Assiniboine (Og / Magog). The Porcupine campground was a free campsite that is first-come, first-serve for our first night. However, if you have Og booked, you may be able to make it all the way there for your first night and skip porcupine

      @worldwildhearts what a wonderful hiked. Question why you recommend skipping the porcupine campground? I am going this coming June 17. Thanks

    • @worldwildhearts
      @worldwildhearts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Porcupine campground isn’t particularly cozy and had lots lots of mosquitoes when we were there. We had to hike down to the campground and then hike up again to continue to Og lake. I think it’s possible to hike from Sunshine village directly to Og Lake campground, which is better. but it would definitely be a long day!

    Hi! May I ask how much money you have spent for the entire hike of mount Assiniboine, if you don't mind.

    • @worldwildhearts
      @worldwildhearts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not so much! The porcupine campsite was free, and lake Magog campsite was only 10$ per person per night. We already had all the camping gear. Bought dehydrated meals for our dinners which were 10$ each. For breakfast and lunches we had oatmeal, trail mix, tuna cans with crackers. So that was another 30$ maybe. We refilled our waters at the campsite and/or rivers and used some water tabs to take bacteria out. We had one car parked at mt shark and the other one at sunshine village so we were lucky we didn’t have to pay for the shuttle either!

      @@worldwildhearts It's more the level seems off. When I watch adventure/outdoor content the larger channels go for subtle relaxing music/none at all. Here it seems like the music is fighting to be louder than your own voices and a randomized mix of genres. This is your content and clearly you are free to do as you wish but that's just my 2 cents :) Check out content from Foresty Forest - he gets it right for me. Sorry if I came across rude in my last post! Thanks for the upload.
