Sad to hear that he just passed away a couple of days ago. As a Haitian, I know exactly what he went through, because I went through it in the early/mid ‘80s. We had to tighten up our Zo crew, and handle up. Gone, but this legend will never be forgotten. RIP Kangol Kid.🇭🇹

and they had the best scratching DJ in the world until Jazzy Jeff came along. Leader of the Pack was badass, and of course Roxanne Roxanne. Ice scratched that whole song as an overdub, after it was finished, which is why there's scratching in the verses and under lyrics (which wasn't really done), instead of just the breaks. He'd been unavailable, and just made it back in time to put the final touches on the song.

Being originally born in Newark, NJ and moved out to LA when I was 8 yrs old, back in 1979. I remember hearing The Suger Hill Gang, Funky Four Plus One More, Baambata, Grandmaster Flash right before we left the East Coast and trying to explain it to kids I met at my new Elementary School about what Hip Hop Music was back then, which hadnt reached the West Coast yet, Until That One Day I went to Venice Beach in 1983, with my new yet Tiny Ghetto Blaster, my Aunt who took us, her friend and my sister, it was then I Heard Roxanne Roxanne for the first time, MY WORLD CHANGED FOREVER, that was when I was Re-united with Hip Hop once again, Thank You Kangol for All Your Contributions to The Hip Hop Culture!!! UTFO was a dope rap group. Mix Master Ice was a wizard on the wheels. I was there watching Dr. Ice and Kangol dancing with Whodini. The very first dancers with a rap group. I was there when Mix Master Ice battle Jazzy Jeff in the NY street seminar at the palladium.. I still listen to UTFO and all the rap groups from the 80s.

I remember buying the UTFO cassette, I was younger I was so excited to listen to the tape I sat in my moms car and listened to it while she shopped. I'm an 80's head, and never knew Kangol was Haitian. The thing it wasn't just Haitian, really all people from the West Indies went through this especially at that time because there was a heavy influx of Caribbean people coming into NY generally, Brooklyn/Queens more specifically

Sure is interesting, Educated Rapper also came n born in UK carribean heritage too. As well as Slick Rick uk born carribean parentage but you know how it is, west Indian cultures were moving around choices of English speaking destinations such as Britain, Canada, north America. Comparison to it's west African counterparts would move to china, Korea and almost anywhere without even thinking of fitting in language wise.

Kangol Kid was the flyest cat ever to wear a kangol. First OGs to mix with rapping and singing: UTFO, The Force MDs, Whodini, Full Force, Whistle and of course - New Edition!! Rapping and singing in one song begins with those artists I grew up with!!

I'm not gonna say that it was better back in the day and more exciting because there's small pockets here & there that have a good scene but damn I do wish I could crawl into a time machine and visit the 80's & early 90's once again.
