@@maddhatter3564, Yea, no one really knows! They say it can bounce off the top of earth atmosphere, but cant make it into space! It ain't going fast enough to leave ! Then , speed comes from a few different factors. After burn brings the temp up to high on a fighter because of the materials used in a fighter for expenses! Need a thousand fighters,,, need 10 Blackbirds. Cost is not a factor! I could only guess but , all speeds are the safe speeds for our fighters to cruise at. But need be to get out of a hostile environment, they could keep it full afterburner, go from mach 2, hit mach 3 , fry the engines, and still not hurt the airframe. Then theres ,, dont let your enemies know your strengths!
I get to see one of these whenever I want. Its huge , imposing and the plane on display at our air museum has an engine dropped out so you can see how the enormous thrust was made.
My high school science teacher was a mechanic on the Blackbird. He told us they would write messages in the wheel well in pencil. (maintenance stuff) he said the plane get so hot the graphite would etch the writing in the aluminum. It would be there for the next crew.

I believe the Russian that fled to the USA with the rumor MIG-25 at the time, wanted to see the SR-71. The majestic bird that ruled over the USSR skies for years. Even he had the upmost respect as he too tried to intercept it to only seek refuge in its makers country.
Rubbish, poooptin is working now on a new super fighter jet capable of flying at mach 20. Still on the drawing board, but will be available and fighting in Ukraine on the year 2055.
Technically fighters also outrun missiles if they're outside the MAR, as long as they can dive to the deck and give the missiles a few turns they can run it out of energy before it reaches them. The MAR (Minimum Abort Range) depends on the missile and several other factors, but the MAR for an AIM-120C-7 is of the order of 10 nautical miles on the deck, even though its range might be 65 or more nautical miles. The cool thing about the Blackbird is, it can outrun missiles at high altitude.
