    It doesn't matter if a purple belt can smash a black belt. It's very possible and happens. There are all kinds of different levels of practitioners. A seasoned purple who competes at the higherst level can quite possibly smash non-competitive black belts and maybe even some older competitive blacks. More importantly is developing your game and character and that can be done with proper training.
    I have been practicing and studying the grappling arts for over 30 years. It has helped me tremendously to grow into the person I am today. I believe jiu jitsu does the mind and body good, especially after you learn that it is more than just about learning technique and to develop fighting skills. For me it's more than that.
    My goal is to give you more insight into jiu jitsu from the perspective of an mature black belt, because my perspective is not necessarily the same as the perspective of a 25 year-old black belt competitor.
    Dojo Americana represents the NineNine team in San Diego North County. We are located in Vista.

    Those who get injured the most seem to be the one going 100% when training at every class. I have a student that complains about his hands hurting but he uses a lot of strength every time he rolls. He doesn’t know how to train without using power and strength. Even against those with way less experience. And he’s been at it for over 8 years. Sometimes you just can’t get people to understand how to use jiu jitsu leverage to their own advantage. They think they need to use power all the time to win. For one, you don’t need to win every roll by smashing your opponents. You can win just by defending. There’s a lot to it.

      Dojo Mark I've been learning that. I've been training for about 4 months and just recently been using hip escapes properly and recognizing the right moment to apply them. It's crazy how effective they are and how much it has increased my success in rolling.

      if you have a student that is not rolling like you would like them too is it not your job as their teacher to 'teach them' how to do it the way you would like ?

      what you say is true... but at the same time you need to quit with the old man vs young man nonsense... you are rolling at like fifty percent if that... AND as a bjj black belt who is over fifty myself... WE ALL ROLL WITH ANYONE WHO WALKS THROUGH THE DOOR.

      When you go easy and you result to be hard and heavy on your sparring partner, that's the real black belt level Bro, and when you are over 40 you have to get a deep change in our rolling: cannot go superfast and superhard all the way..

    • @markhopkinsphoto7257
      @markhopkinsphoto7257 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are hard days and easier days just like there are easy rolls and tougher rolls. It’s all about balance and the reason I point this out is there are too many people who have one speed-hard and fast. Which leads to injuries and why a lot of people stop training before they reach blue belt.

    Well, the “old man” does Jiujitsu for a living. He should be able to handle the purple belt fairly easily. But absolutely he can get smashed by a purple belt, even a good blue belt, but that’s more rare.

    • @RaveyDavey
      @RaveyDavey 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Handling a young purple belt (who essentially should have very solid BJJ) when you're an old due is very often not easy if the purple goes hard. Age makes a huge difference.

  • @brianr2941

  • @Muscleupsanddangles
    @Muscleupsanddangles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The truth of the matter is that from purple up it is all advanced ranks. A pan am champ purple is going to beat black belts of many ages. The advanced belts don't just acknowledge performance, although that is important. It represents experience, muscle memory, knowledge of technique, teaching ability. Through purple, my experience is that it is earned by proven performance on the mat, after that, it is more nuanced.

      Dojo Mark So even though you look much younger than 51, I have seen firsthand that sometimes older is better in combat.
      About 3 years ago, I witnessed a very good wrestler about late twenties who competed in local MMA events annihilated with sick joint locks & submissions over and over by a Hapkido sensei who was about maybe 5ft 3" tops. They were really going at it too.
      I later found out that the wrestler was brought in by the old guy's student because the student complained to him that his wrestler buddy kept owning him when they sparred. I also found out that the sensei was 67 at the time.

    I'm a 45-year old purple belt. Every young kid tries to smash me. Some of it is self-inflicted because I roll to compete (against myself). I loved the commentary but loved the commentary just as much. I want to be able to flow like this. It will be my goal for this year: smooth out the rough spots, roll with clarity, use less muscle and fine-tune my game. Thanks for the vid. I'm subscribing.

    that was a great video. I'm approaching 47 and sometimes I catch myself talking in middle of sparring friendly or not with an opponent twice my size, younger, stronger or known to be very aggressive on a day when I am not feeling it. Both guys here were both highly skilled and technical. In our 40's over class there's a lot of inter chat during the spar for technique and learning mostly

    When i asked my instructor if i was doing wrong things because i was constantly getting in bad positions with him he said to me " You are doing all the right things my timing is better". So i believe even a blue belt can beat a blackbelt if he can choose a few moves and works on them consistently. Along with other moves but find something and specialize in it.

      When I posted I had only watched about 60 seconds before shutting it off. I watched a little more since then and to your credit it looked like you turned it up a little a few minutes in. I think the problem with Jiu-Jitsu sometimes is they go too light and don't play for keeps right off the bat. I wrestled in High School then spent 6 months in Judo and belted there before I finally found a Jiu-Jitsu school in the late 90s. I walked in day one to that Jiu-Jitsu school and started tapping people out because, they were going so light they were leaving openings. I always approach sparring like the other person wants to do me harm and I have to put him away as quick as possible. If you are too relaxed when a real life situation happens you could open yourself up to getting hurt. I am nearing my 50s now and I don't think it is a good idea to practice Jiu-Jitsu anymore for self defense - too damaging on the body. I bought a gun to protect my family at home.
