This is a technical demonstration of an escape from side control at Derby City MMA in Louisville, KY. This is great side control escape against an opponent who is staying very tight and not allowing space for many of the traditional escapes.

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY.
As a white belt, this is absolute gold for me, thank you my friend!
still a white belt ?
Liquid let’s hope not
Ditto
As a blue belt... this is absolute gold... lol
Just started Bjj today lol this is golden to me because all the dude did was side control
Watched it couple of months ago. First try I faild miserably, but lately it's been working just fine. Swept a bad ass black belt the other day, things got ugly afterwards, but totally worth it ;-)
Haha
maxed out martial-arts no you dont
@GoonSquadProductions but if he post is cause is true
Worth it
Gotta appreciate the little victories.
Seven years after first watching this I'm still hitting this sweep
I love this sweep, and it has worked tonnes of times for me, though my training partners have gotten used to it and now tend to post the hand nearest the hip. Currently searching to see if Chewy addresses that in any video 😂
CHEWIE!!!!! I have been a whitebelt for 3 weeks now and wanted an effective way to escape out of side control. They professor hadn't taught us this move and I performed it successfully on 5 different opponents. Thank you soooooo much.
From AUS
Did this TODAY! Worked extremely well, like easier than most moves I try to replicate. Had a harder time 2nd attempt with heavier guy, creating distance the higher the opponent was on my chest was more challenging but rode it out and got it!!!! I’m a white belt , this move is legit AF
Still a white belt ?
Soooo useful. I've been getting stuck in side control so much and we haven't been taught what to do there or how to escape. Thank you for this
This has become my favorite escape from side control. I've hit it a dozen times, at least. Thanks for posting.
+Justin Holmes Excellent! I'm glad to hear it brother. Thanks for letting me know.
shanis81 As soon as you complete the roll you can hunt for an Americana.
+shanis81 Yes you can. +Justin Holmes is right. Usually a person's arm pops out and there is an americana there. It's a quick submission or can be used to escape.
@@Chewjitsu I love this sweep but wondering how you react when the opponent posts the hand nearest the hip to inhibit the roll? Any help would be awesome!
Finally hit this in a roll against a decent opponent today after probably 20+ attempts, what made the difference for me was being as tight as physically possible with the opponents arm, thanks chewy
I watched this over two years ago and still use this technique constantly. Thank you!
I watched this after being held down in my first class by a 16 week white belt. Pulled this off flawlessly yesterday to my professor and opponents delight. Thanks so much!
I tried this yesterday. It actually worked and I was so excited. Surprised the hell out of myself. Thanks Chewy
Nice tutorial, however, Chewie without the beard looks like they just let him out of kindergarten :D
haha it's true.
hahaha! I didn't even realize it was him!
I had to do a double take! 😏 Who is this new instructor?!? Bring back Chewie! 😜
Ya man, totally a different person!
Legend has it, chewy killed a man using only his beard. Conspiracy theories flooded the BJJ world as to why he shaved it. Some say it was to destroy evidence, some say he feared the almighty power of the beard. The only thing we know for certain is....the beard is back
Chew was born to instruct, excellent!
Used this last night while holy crap it works lol
This is excellent information.
If you still have the original source video, have you considered reducing the volume of the gym audio and adding narration? It is very difficult to understand what is being said, but the information you are passing along is gold. Thank you!
3rd week in and getting crushed in side control has been my biggest issue. Cannot WAIT to get in the gym and start working on this
I love seeing how simple yet effective some techniques are. I just wanna facepalm and say "why didn't I think of that?!" Can't wait to try this out
That's cool. Good stuff. Being fresh to Jiu-Jitsu those side control situations almost seem impossible to get out of, but those techniques do and make a huge difference in getting out of holds.
I needed this as a white belt I often get stuck in side control. I can’t wait to try this on Monday!
Holy crap, this is exactly the technique I've needed to be successful. Thank you so much.
I have used this move a handful to times and it works if you do it right. The first time was a no go. But all the times after it was great. Today I used it on a brown belt and I thought it was pretty cool being that I'm a white belt (it worked on him).
This has been working for me but only against smaller opponents. It really isn't that much a bridge as turning over your hips and getting what was your opposite hip under the opponent ( IMO so I would invite you to correct me if you disagree ). Going to keep working it because it feels great to pull off. Cheers.
im not sure this is a small opponent escape lmao
Thank you, tried it and more than 50% successful in sparring in the last couple of weeks. The unsuccessful attempts seem to be against more Gumby like fighters. Excellent method, a little tough to get up on my elbow on bigger opponents.
Man, I've gotta start drilling this. I get stuck like this off and on and it seems like a solid sweep. Thanks Chewie!
Hell yeah!! Sometimes I get stuck in heavy side control.
I can’t WAIT to apply this tonight!
Thank you Sir!!! I have been struggling with getting off my back; but this makes so much sense to me. Thanks again
I figured this out by mistake a few weeks ago, and I am now perfecting it. Thanks!
I'll be drilling this today before class, then implementing in sparring! lets see what success I can get from it! confidence is key!
another fantastic teaching moment from the Chewmeister! Thank you sir. as always, concise & easy to follow.
Might be an old video, I came across video with you teaching this technique while browsing through your playlist. However, I did this technique against a blue belt in class today; got him over and went to the side control. I'm not sure he let me do it or got him off guard. Either let me or not, I still got him over, lol. I still got a lot of work to execute this escape side control technique.
I think this is exactly what I need. Im a brand new white belt that keeps ending up submitted in side control from some big guys who get crazy pressure on my neck. Been trying to frame into their neck like you did here, but will try using the other palm in their hip to push them down.
I needed this. I train with a lot of guys and girls who were former wrestlers. Getting out of their side control feels impossible lol. I'll try this out tomorrow at practice. Thanks 😁
You’re welcome Andrea! Good luck with your practice.
Nice! As a beginner I would've used shrimp and shoot or block and shot varieties of the shrimp escape from side control.
Doing a side control reversal, which I suppose this is, leads to all kinds of fun stuff. You could go for a scarf-hold and follow it with a Kimura or an armlock. Maybe even go to full mount and do some things from there. Endless possibilities and fun right there.
This is what I needed! Thank you! Gonna drill it n then live roll it. Heavy side control opponents have really smashed me up lately.
I have sub the channel and been watching you along with many other like Ramsey Dewey, The Gracies, and Kama for like a week or two now. Always wanted to learn BJJ since I was little about 10 or so but never had the money or when I did life got in the way like marriage and my children and other things. After watching all you guys and hearing the inspirational speeches and coaching I got my wife and kids to practice some Gracie university online with me and now everyone is on board and focused. I will begin my white belt training at a school near me next week. Enough is enough of letting my dreams slowly pass me bye. I know this isn’t one of those videos but I just wanted to say thanks chewy for helping me remember I’m not to old at 29 and that we have to do what needs to be done before we regret never doing it. Thank you.
Beautiful, thank you. Great explanation of the subtlety of the movement
Saw this video for the first time a few days ago, hit it my first attempt today against an upper belt. Thanks
Yo Chew, I use this Technique all the time. Works every time :) Learnt this from your video a while back and cant stop using it
This is awesome - I struggled today as a 1 stripe white belt against an entire class of 4 stripes/blue & browns when the focus of the rolling was side guard. Just kept getting breadcuttered or mounted and it really annoyed me. I will try this on monday!
Thank you so much for this, I re-started my training yesterday (white belt here) and I keep getting trapped in that side control grip, I'll try this in class as soon as possible. This channel is gold!!!
I got someone with a much higher belt with this move the other day and one of the coaches was like “you totally surprised that guy, I saw the look on his face…” thanks Chewy! 🙏
Oh man. I wish I saw this before class last night. My rolling partner was just laying on me squeezing. I tried other escapes, but he was so much stronger that none of them worked. I wish I had seen this one to try.
I saw this yesterday before practice and was caught on that position and I tried this ... and it worked! thanks!
Thanks Chew !!! That was a great move and well explained step by step!! Os!!
Chewy! This is slick bud. I've been watching you for about a year now, just got my purple this month and your stuff has helped me a lot. Thanks for everything you've put out there. I know sometimes you have re visited older material you've posted with new tweaks or tips you've discovered over the years. I'm wondering, are there any new tips 7 years later that either you or the beard have discovered haha. I'm definitely going to watch this one a few more times and try and fit it into my game. Thanks again!
Great vid. I'm a new white belt. This helps also, because I have a pretty strong side mount, and know I can try to prevent this, too. Your content is amazing Thank you.
Just did side control today. Thanks for this video Chewie!
Excellent technique and very well explained
what a fantastic move. so simple but can this being extremely effective. will put this to practice later today, thanks!!
Just tried it today and worked like a charm!! Thank you!!
Nice escape!! Something different for sure and a nice option. I also wanted to mention that I really like the way you instruct. Thanks for the vids.
+Jiu Jitsu Path Appreciate it. Thanks!
This looks like it's gonna work. Looking forward to using this vs large blue belt with extremely heavy top pressure.
I love the feeling after I watch a video where I'm just like "I can't wait to try this in class!"
i loved this, was able to hit it a couple times during live rolls today
Beautiful! We'll have to give this a try.
I got a guy who cant tap me at my gym... but he just hugs me in side control puts his face next to my face so I can feel his facial hairs and holds me. But this one here I will try. Oss.
*****
one month white belt and oyur getting brown belts in side control? WTF? Are they giving you side control and their back as mercy which I do to my opponents? If not they should be demoted.. LOL. For Peruvian neck tie just remember to get your leg over their head first.. and be fast doing it... if not they will pop their head up and put you on your back. I would maybe try a clock choke.. they are easier and less risky sometimes. For the back... I suggest bow and arrow choke. Its easy and high percentage. Osss.
+Prometheus Antares They must be the worst brown belts ever.
ik this dude bruh he puts so much pressure when hes on side control i hadto tap out once
+tomnightlife this made me laugh. I don't even know why. Thank you for the comment sir .
*****
yeah I used to call out higher belts when I was a blue belt. Some actually refused... I am a muscular guy and I guess that they felt scared to be embarrassed to be tapped out by a lower belt. Some browns even told me that I am too big for them and they refused to roll with me. I was 6ft 204lbs.. not too big. Now I moved gyms and they got their black and I am purple... but I am pretty sure I can still tap them out. LOL
Wow, great explanation. I'll try the arm trap on saturday
Literally just did this class yesterday. Good stuff!
Great video, detailed and you explain the move really well. Thank you! Will try this in my next session.
Escapes like this are fine for BJJ, but not for MMA. When in the top position a guy can suddenly rise up and punch in the face and then secure side control again. For BJJ, most guys aren't going to give you too much time to escape side control. Side control is a great position for submissions, but a guy on top is going to look to fully mount all the time. Then it's time for mount escapes. But in the end, if your escapes work on somebody then it's great to learn as many as possible. Thanks for the video.
OMGosh... Steven Crowder and Chewy are the same dude!!!!
Keith S great. . . Now I'm Crowder too. 😂
lol. He does talk about Jiu Jitsu a lot and has had Rener Gracie on the show.... Just sayin....
Oh and thanks for all these videos!
Thts what i was thinking
holy cow I've always watched your videos but never realized that you were in Kentucky. I'm from Lexington myself
Tomorrow I have my first white belt tournament. These are useful tips. Thank you very much. 👍
For all the smaller guys who cant just pull a larger opponent over the top of themselves, try framing down then using a hitchhiking movement with your legs, utilizing the push back that your opponent gives and hit this from more of a north/south position... less muscle used, more technique/timing
Very nice and smooth. Works great thank you sir.
Very nice. I got stuck in this position the other day (although I did frame properly). Thanks for the tip.
Thanks for the video! I'm a turtle guard guy, so I love turning away. If possible, could you please show what to do if the technique fails? You know, you did everything you were supposed to do, but he somehow got the arm out, or is too heavy to turn? I figure since you use this technique, you must have had it break down on occasion and being the guy you are ... you've got a "go to" if things go south. Thanks again, you're a great instructor! Respect from Canada.
I’ve been getting smashed when I spar side control. This helps so much!
That’s awesome OSSS!!!! Thank you for sharing this video 💪💪💪💪💪
My rolling partner used this a lot and I didn't know about it so I just flipped over easily. Now I know it and it is really helpful especially when I'm under a big guy in the position
You could also attack with a Kimora, if you’re not agile enough to circle around their head to lock in a far side armbar. Just make sure to stay heavy by staying on your toes.
Really could have used this two days ago....ouch. Will be working on it. Thanks for the video.
I just had my first open mat training! As my first training ever. My body is sore now but mannn it was amazing
The pressure i felt and how i got sweeped and submitted was just beutiful. Im dripping with sweat and theyre all calm and composed. Letsgooo jiu jitsu journey! Finally
Nice!im gonna add this one on my side control escapes.thanks chewjitsu!👍
interesting escape, very nice. Thank you for sharing.
I usually give them the mount since it is so easy to escape from there. Side control - to me is the best spot as top guy. I will just stay there and work that far arm as a 123 - kimura Americana and if he pushes back - head and arm choke just like over and over - works quite well. A mount is good for nothing if you can’t punch
Whaaat I can hit a triangle arm bar.
Aggressive bottom side control! This is gold!
White belt here, one, I love the no beard! And two I like the emphasis on the use of hips over trying to bench press someone off you. Once I learned this my game changed.
Simple, effective. Great stuff
My new favorite sweep! love it! thanks!
You're welcome.
I have been a white belt for 16 years and this move is sooo legit. Really works!!!
Use this all the time. Absolute best
Very nice escape - Thanks !
+xGarrettThiefx You're welcome!
Well, look who it is :)
Hey bud ! Unfortunately my BJJ days have come to and end due to a bulging disk and various ongoing injuries !
:( I'm sorry to hear that!
+xGarrettThiefx So that's another reason why you were saying that BJJ has more injuries in that other post...damn dude, I'm sorry :( that sucks. Are you going to get it repaired??
Simple, effective and amazing.
Amazing. Every blue belt has to know this. I am speading the word
Chewy thanks for sharing your time and knowledge
You're the absolute man! Thanks for these awesome videos!
Used to do something similar when I wrestled in high-school. I would be stuck in bottom half-Nelson (about to get pinned), except in my case, I would over-hook the head (vs under-hook in the video), roll the guy while pushing with my forearm (vs wrist in the video), and immediately end up pinning the guy with a reverse arm triangle. I get people pretty often with this in BJJ too. I'll give this a try in the gym later this week, but my first assumption is one might have an easier time sweeping if you use your whole forearm. Really cool to see there was already a variant of it in BJJ!
Edit: if you do my way correctly you should end up catching them in a reverse arm triangle in north-south.
Thanks chewy . I'm gonna use this. Team mate like to hold me down with his shoulder from this position. Now I'll know how to sweep him
That's just wonderful move it never ceases to amaze me I thought about taking Jiu-Jitsu I'm in my fifties now instead of going swimming at the local pool membership
nice breakdown of the movement. thanks!
Can’t wait to try this tomorrow
Omg this is crazy good. I’m gonna try to attempt it today. Thanks!
I just don’t see this working against an athletic opponent but I am going to try it because chewjitsu is a God and he says it works
Going to try this. Thanks Chewie
I love this. Gonna try it tonight.
How did it go?
Oooh, fancy. Can't wait to try it out!
Tried it out yet?
Did it work out?
@@guyeshel9316 no. :'( haven't trained in forever
@@guyeshel9316 Oh man, 7 years later and I know I've never remembered to try it. Hopefully I remember tomorrow. lol
That looks awesome. Gonna give it a try
I actually used this in my last class. Work perfectly
what an awesome video! thanks so much for posting this
