The Robot-Arm Prosthetic Controlled by Thought

- Johnny Matheny is the first person to attach a mind-controlled prosthetic limb directly to his skeleton. After losing his arm to cancer in 2008, Johnny signed up for a number of experimental surgeries to prepare himself to use a DARPA-funded prosthetic prototype. The Modular Prosthetic Limb, developed by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, allows Johnny to regain almost complete range of motion through the Bluetooth-controlled arm.

This man had a water leak in his house and I came out to inspect it. Immediately saw his arm and wondered I’ve never seen an arm like that. I asked him about it respectfully and he is the nicest most down to earth guy. The fact he can think in his brain to move his nonexistent fingers is crazy to me and to see it in real life is actually insane! There is so many people with similar problems... When I was a kid I had a dream: I studied hard to create (or at least try to create) prostetics that could help such people. But through time I've got just one little problem: I was transited into another country, where my instistute was downgraded in EVERY way. But I'm glad that at least somewhere it was created. It will take much time, but I pray that some day it will be avaliable at least to 1/3 of a people that suffer out there.

Incredible seeing the first steps we are taking into real human cybernetics. I'm looking forward to the day you can have a cool chrome silver hand that moves like a real one and is strong enough to rip a door off it's hinges.
When you consider that a natural arm can move by thoughts in the brain, it makes sense. All of our arm and hand muscles are innervated by the brachial plexus in the shoulder. If you reconnect those severed nerves with the prosthetic arm & hand, it will operate just like a natural arm & hand.
