FYI: When Leonard Cohen(The songwriter/original artist) as honored for lifetime achievemnt in Canada, k.d.Lang prformed this song. He said it as the best interpretation/version he had ever heard of Hallelujah. That was five years before this performance.

For me, this is one of those special ones. k d lang has been around forever, and I was never a fan.. That song had been covered so many times, I was not interested any more. So as I was watching the opening ceremonies of the 2010 olympics and they announced she was singing this song, I was indifferent. Then she did THIS! Changed my attitude forever. Tears every time I hear this performance.

She is pitch perfect. Roy Orbison had her sing with him the song "Crying". Incredible. Roy was pitch perfect as well as he didn't just sing with anyone.

Sometime after that one, Cohen and his partner had this discussion which about says it all: "Cohen's partner, singer Anjani Thomas, said: "After hearing k.d. lang perform that song at the Canadian Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2006 we looked at each other and said, 'well, I think we can lay that song to rest now!' " You should also watch her version of 'Crying' at the Roy Orbison Tribute.
This is my favorite version of this song because of the way she sang it. She is telling a story to you; not singing a hymn. It makes the lyrics come alive and touch more personally.

Like you said, this song has been covered 100s of times. Most sing it like a hymn or like PTX, make it a Xmas song which it is neither. I love PTX version for its power, but hearing kd sing it the 1st time I realized that her interpretation was correct. You feel the emotion & understand the meaning in the way Cohen meant it to be. Frankly I detested this song. But now find myself singing it kd style. And I don't mind listening to her sing it over and over again

I’ve always thought she sang this as a prayer in tribute to the Olympic athlete who died on a practice run that day.

In the 60's it was Joan Baez and Judy Collins, the 70's it was Linda Ronstadt. Since the late 80's, kd lang is second to none.
Love Judy Collins, Linda amazing voices but KD is out of this world talented. Perfect pitch never heard her sing an off note…❤
