What surprises me is that "being overtaken by Poland" is used as an insult and sorce of complete disgrace; a bit like "being overtaken by cavemen." Is it just my wounded polish pride tallking, or is it a bit racist?
It’s slightly racist, but let’s remember that 20 yrs ago Polish rush to the UK accepting any jobs, living in terrible conditions. The situation has changed. Poland has developed nicely and keeps growing. Yet in the Brits minds the image from the past is still vivid. There’s any informative programme on British TV not only about Poland but about the whole EU. Brits don’t learn much about the history of the continent, they do speak any languages, don’t understand the current affairs and they don’t have much information on what’s going elsewhere. Hence it’s hard to accept that the situation has changed.

What is the british obsession with Poland? Poland was left by allies France and the UK behind the iron curtain where it shouldn’t develop for the next 40 years, and now it’s catching up. Poland was never meant to be a poor country, it’s all about the history.
I suspect (I may be wrong) that it is about dividing the rest of Europe into better ones (France, Germany) with which to compete, and worse ones (Poland and the rest of Central Europe) which is only supposed to provide hands for simple jobs, and the fact that they are outperforming the British economically is a sign of the very poor state of the economy.
Poland used to be the eponymous "poor country" + it's too far for the UK (France, and so on) to pay close attention to what's happening two countries over.
@@Dylan-q9l2v Yes, there is a reason so many countries want to invade, envy, jealousy, it's natural beauty, beautiful cities and the hardest working people in Europe! Worst case scenario Poland will be 8% behind the UK. That is, Poland will be marginally behind a former global superpower. As a Polish person, I rub my eyes in disbelief. But I’d rather Poland get there due to it’s success rather than UK’s misery.
Look in history book and see that its not a kind of a miracle but rather a situation where Poland has the opportunity for uninterrupted growth and economy developement. When such environment lasts for at least a century, Polish economy grows to become one of five major European ones.
I'm in Poland at the moment. The difference is clear: a young, dynamic, intelligent, hard-working and polite people with a clear pride in their nation (if the number of Polish flags is anything to go by). It makes Britain look tired and giving up. Not only will Poland's GDP be higher by 2030, its quality of life has already overtaken the UK, with cheap prices, affordable housing and great public transport. If we were still in the EU, I'd be happy to put down roots here.
tbh even if PL does not overtake the UK, having just an 8% gap between the two, with the context that PL only had a free market for 35 years, while the UK had one for centuries, is astonishing
Now compare this to a certain group of people who still blame their failures on colonization, and there is probably no country in the world that has been destroyed as often in the last 200 years as Poland.

Never experienced another country in Europe who is hungry to learn other (non-anglo saxon) identities and history
I mean Poland used to be in the top 10 economies in the world, and biggest country in Europe at one point, but they suffered the Swedish Deluge in which 25% of them died in the 1600s, followed by partitions by Germany,Austria and Russia which then used their populace as conscripts to fight each other and their land was being used as the main battle ground on the eastern front of WW1, and more recently WW2 in which 20% of them died and Warsaw was erased off the map and had to be rebuilt brick by brick, not to mention 50 years of forced communism after. WW2 didn't even end in 1945 for Poland, while people were celebrating on the streets of London, Polish resistence fought the USSR into the 50s, so yes Poland after just 30 years of freedom and peace is getting back to where they naturally should be.
Due to the extremely flawed political system of the Commonwealth (as it was called - it wasn't just poland but also lithuania and ruthenia) and the culture at the time, I would say that what happened in the 17th, and later 18th century is more like a symptom than a cause...
@@JanSoltan-wj1hs That was fixed. The golden veto was abolished in a new constitution, cant remember what year in the 1700s, but Poland abolishing the veto meant it could no longer be controlled by foreign powers from within which lead to Catherine the Great invading, followed by Prussia, which wiped the nation off the map. Had they been given a chance at statehood under this new constitution without Russia and Prussia invading they would have prospered again.

Why GDP largely do not matter and is a flawed incicator? Living in both Uk and Poland i realized that Polish familly is doing way better than British one on average for some years now, 70% of the population in Poland owns an house or flat, have good car, way better services, better communication, better health care, polish cities are packed with bootics, restaurants, lots of small shops, something that i saw dissapearing from Uk's towns and i would argue the slaray purchase power is better in Poland as well in last 2-4 years. Visiting friends in both countries, polish houses looks clean and luxurious in comparison. I think Uk has failed to create a diversified economy, meanwhile holding to very generous social money giveaway festiwal, they could not afford long term and that was abused by lazy shits from abroad and lower society paracites that should be out there working. Shamely, Poland is doing the same, with each party throwing out new handouts for this and that bullshit...
The point about the economy not being diversified is actually really important. Poland has a robust industrial and service industry. The UK has only a thriving financial industry, whose profits however are mostly shifted to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, America, etc. And the industrial sector was deliberately destroyed by the Tories to kill the old Labour Party.
polish agriculture is totally uncompetitive. it produces goods for €10 bln and getting 25th bln subsidies from EU budget. In another hand polish government banned all competitors on their market. so, it's just a question of little time when unproductive polish agriculture will be destroyed by much powerful agriculture countries.

Just because Poland is growing from a small base and has a lot of historic issues to deal with doesn't man they won't outgrow that. I am particularly interested in how much wealthier (or poorer) certain regions of the UK are compared to specific parts of Poland. The Warsaw or Gdańsk regions are for example much wealthier than the Bradford area. In the UK, the difference between rich and "poor" is very large, with most of the wealth being generated in London. People living and working outside of London are considerably less wealthy. Many Poles are already considerable more wealthier than many Britons. Also, an 8 percent difference in GDP is not really a cause for celebration for the UK.

English exceptionalism (and fatalism). We are talking about a 5-year projection, not a 30-year projection. OECD projections and ECB projections show slightly different figures than that of the IMF, and it is highly likely that Poland will overtake the UK within 5 years. There is another reason why this might happen. The Polish population is younger than the English population, and they will see people from abroad returning.

Sunak, Cameron, Boris and Farage have made things worse-much worse-but it wasn't great to begin with. The UK's problem is that it is a stagnant, paternalistic aristocracy/oligarchy. The country has managed to stay afloat because of its head start, cultural and linguistic links to America, and its financial centre, but this isn't sustainable. We should be an innovation-driven, free-market economy, yet we live in a modern version of Downton Abbey with a touch of Jane Austen and William Blake. It's an oligarchy where the rich get richer-inheritance tax is virtually ignored-while the working population is taxed to death. Innovation is discouraged, meaning property/houses are used as a method of investment by the lazy elite rather than a basic need for people. Consequently, house prices are through the roof, meaning the working population is spending more and more time and money paying rent and mortgages instead of channeling it into money-generating opportunities like equities etc. and all of this is largely due to the Conservative Party, the party of the landed class, the lords, and ladies. They love taxes and vehemently oppose capitalism, ensuring everyone knows their place in the class structure. No ‘new money,’ please.

Cant happen as it's too late for the formation of oligarchs in Poland. Oligarchs are created by sudden privitisation of state assets, benefiting individuals. As seen at the collapse of the USSR, Russian and Ukrainian individuals were basically able to capture entire state assets like oil companies for themselves through corruption. Poland instead didn't privatise at first and basically had the idea of letting new capitalist private companies compete against the public ones, which worked incredibly well and led to not a single oligarch in Poland and a better wealth inequality than in the U.K. for example.
Of course that’s only a prediction, yet apart from the chart there’s also reality. Why not compare transportation in the both countries? I suspect (I may be wrong) that it is about dividing the rest of Europe into better ones (France, Germany) with which to compete, and worse ones (Poland and the rest of Central Europe) which is only supposed to provide hands for simple jobs, and the fact that they are outperforming the British economically is a sign of the very poor state of the economy.

Rebuilding their capital city was a monumental task of national pride, especially when there was no help from the West, like the Marshall Plan!
Because there is a large Polish population in the UK, lots came during WW2.

2 million people is not an economy
@@_______MCK._________Of course it is, every country has an economy regardless of size.
The 3 pillars of the UK economy.
1. The City Of London.
2. Scottish Energy.
3. The Rest.
'The Rest' barely qualifies for first world status!.
This is from a continental Geography school text book.
For sure Poland can do this obviously even more likely so as Britain keeps sanctioning itself while Poland believes in cooperation in a strong European Union. Greetings from Belgium.
As a polish person i know this perapective of Poland overtaking UKs gdp must be terryfying for brits.

English exceptionalism (and fatalism). We are talking about a 5-year projection, not a 30-year projection. OECD projections and ECB projections show slightly different figures than that of the IMF, and it is highly likely that Poland will overtake the UK within 5 years. There is another reason why this might happen. The Polish population is younger than the English population, and they will see people from abroad returning.
more capitalism = more shorttermism. In the UK capitalism is extreme, hence the result. Then the UK has been taken over and is run by the US. Basically it is a colony. Just wait for Trump to come back. The country will be sucked to the bone.
And Britain is out of EU...
Also brexit!.
I tu się mylisz. Tusk w przeciwieństwie do PIS realizuje pimolitykę zwijania Polski.

Great comment! 👌
Brexit is and will be the biggest own goal in British history.
Time will tell
@user-ce8rm9tb6v swamp clearance still under way.
Don't judge is until we have a government which beleives in leaving.
Time already has as have all the economic experts and it is foolish and naive to believe otherwise.
@@paulgibbons2320 No sane Government can possibly believe leaving the EU was a prudent move!.
@@fitzstv8506 Government didn't. It's not on them.
British voters decided.
They claim to be where they are to serve. Must servants approve all tasks the master asks of them ?
Nothing has been proven at all.
We are succeeding just fine with half of the nation 48% holding back and even trying to obstruct us.
When they get on board with democracy. Who knows what we might achieve.
Our status in the EU was not reviewed for 48 years.
Why do we need to review Brexit every day ?
Stop remoaning.
Get the hell on with it.

@@shif06 the diffrence being, one is culturaly similar, and other is culturaly far diffrent. Ukrainians, believe it or not, mostly are hard working, same with Poles. Illegall immigrants, on other hand, are more unpredictable.
The argument for Brexit is that there are too many immigrants from underdeveloped European countries like Poland😂
I dont think most of us understand just how bad the economy is here, life is better in pretty much every EU country at this point...
there is no economy in the UK really, there is a housing casino that sucks all the money it can do, then there is Bank of England that sucks further dozens of billions ... the crumbs are left to the population to buy bread, butter and milk and pay for dirty water and overpriced electricity and gas. The UK is top class scam!
True. Sad but true.
My wife is Polish... maybe she could get me in there for a decent retirement? 😅
why not mate not so long ago my British friend emigrated to Wrocław :)
Great Britain is becoming a third world country. Stay safe.
Yeah a lot of Poles who go work in the UK just want to get money to get settled here, instead of paying off mortgage all life, they can be financially free if they spend a couple years there. You'd be too since the cost of living here is quite nice.
Poland is a great country and hard working people and totally deserve to be on top. They’ve had a pretty awful history.
Yeah the UK shot itself in the foot with Brexit.
Not immigration and diversity though??!?😅
@TG-ts3xn Immigrants seem to work harder than your average brit. Is sad to see so many British people are on drugs or benefits and refuse to work. And these same people are angry that Immigrants are coming to replace them in the job market. The benefit system in this country is encouraging people to be lazy and that is having a huge impact on the economy.
@@user-ug8wx5er1wThat’s right blame the immigrants for everything
Not really, more to do with a completely incompetent Conservative party.
@@vextally7566Totally agree. There's little incentive for certain groups to work. The state seems happy to pick up the bill...
We should adopt Poland's immigration policy, then watch our economy magically repair itself.
Poland still doesn't really have oligarchs - help them keep it this way!
There are ppl in companies who earn million per month, getting Rich is easy its about knowledge and spirit and market needs.
Poland was poorer than Ukraine back in 1991. Look where Poland is now. No Oligarchs helped for sure.
Of course that’s only a prediction, yet apart from the chart there’s also reality. Why not compare transportation in the both countries? The quality of buildings, medical facilities, education or motorways?
Maybe that would be too shocking for the Great Britain to realise what’s happening in the UK ?
Poland us actually a country with big potential. The comparison is nothing shocking.
Slovenia has overtaken Britain! 14yrs of Tory rule has wrecked everything!

So millions of Poles(decent people) working in the UK then spending in Poland pre Brexit isn't a big part of Polands economic growth?
