Man, I have a feeling getting some help in the shop would do incredible things for your mental health. Not to oversimplify your depression, it is never simple, but imagine the difference 40 hours of help every week would make. I'm glad you have rediscovered an enjoyable hobby. It's nice to see you light up like that. I hope it's only up from there.

Hey Kaylee.. TMI maybe but I’ve been so overwhelmed n depressed lately and plants have been such a healing special thing that has brought me joy that I’d forgotten possible. Your channel has helped me so much, from education to laughs to just having a lovely voice to listen to. Please try to take care of yourself, you’ve done SO MUCH for this community and you deserve it. People as busy and hard working as you are at real risk of this sort of burn out slipping under the radar, so I’m glad you caught it. Big love and take care you fuckin legend ♥️

As someone who also grew up with horses and riding and then stopping in my early 20s I am so happy for you, that you're quite literally getting back into the saddle. Fun fact, due to my mom being a lifelong equestrian I got taught at a very strict yet very prestigious riding school and I witnessed adult riders that came from all over the country with their own horses be asked to leave after 25 minutes due to bad etiquette as it was called. So, props to you for educating yourself from all angles and trying to do your best in improving.
Anywho, I'm really happy that the rediscovery of an old hobby is bringing you so much joy, and maybe even counterbalances some of the insane amounts of stress you have and the mental state you're experiencing.
Sidenote: what might be interesting to you is learning to read a horse's body language and communicating in a very intuitive way like JoinUp by Roberts.

I’ve been in cancer treatment since March. I just finished active treatment last Thursday and I thought I’d be so excited and happy and thankful. I didn’t feel any of that I feel numb and depressed about it. It’s hard to explain depression when you know you should be happy but you’re just not. My plants help some but they are also overwhelming at times.

I have high functioning depression too, it use to be called dysthymia, yeah it sucks but it’s important to be aware. Soooo happy you re found your horse ridding hobby. I tried ridding while in college but I was terrible and didn’t have the time or money. It took me awhile to learn the squeeze vs the nudge/kick too 🤣. I mostly ended up being involved in horse breeding with the college’s program. Loved making baby horses and helping raise them 🥰, even if they were bratty sometimes 🙄!

Aww your fern is so cute! Those little guys coming off it are stolons. If they get in contact with another pot, it'll root and form a new plant. They're basically aerial roots, but fern style. They're super cute though! It looks like Nephrolepis exaltata, the boston fern!

    • @tracyfrederick5606

A few years ago my violin teacher sat me down and told me to get a hobby outside of violin. It was because violin was quickly moving from being my one and only hobby, to being my job. And so she recommended I got a hobby that was just for me and just for fun. So I started knitting, and have kept that as a hobby ever since.
I think it's important to have something that is just yours, and especially when so much of your work and life is online. Keep the horse riding just for you and enjoy it.

We are not horse people but our 7-year old has loved horses since she was a baby. She's been going to horse camps for a couple of years and started lessons in the spring (the farm we use is 7+). They teach gentle riding AND they do equine therapy. There was a waitlist but our kiddo has anxiety, and also needed some physical therapy and we managed to get her in. I cannot tell you what a difference this has made for her mental and physical health. It's incredible. Have a wonderful vacation!

My mare was my best friend. I miss horses so desperately, but my girl passed away and I'm just not in a position to be able to have another or take lessons. Some day, though. I hope your kiddo continues to enjoy her horsey experiences, it's truly magical

I’ve had horses most of my life ( I’m 50 ish now). Horses are the most beautiful souls and when you get that connection it’s majestic. I’m also a qualified riding instructor. Something you might want to check out is that jumping is a much more natural movement for a horse than dressage. The stress to the horses joints caused by going in small circles is considerable. Hope you live your new old love of equines 😊. My new love is plants and thank you for all the info you share.

I've been going through a major depression and finally broke. On May 11th, my then 2week old baby girl started having seizures. The cause was viral meningitis and it set off a series of very serious situations. The seizures themselves cause significant damage to various areas of her brain, and then she had strokes which caused further damage and even death in some areas of the brain. She had an emergency decompression craniectomy (took out a section of her skull to allow her brain to swell safely). Then things calmed down. We went home from the hospital and we thought things were on the up once she got her bone flap put back in mid July. Shortly after the flap got infected (MRSA) and had to be removed. She's 4 months old now and is finally doing better. I feel like I can breathe again and just enjoy my baby girl. However, now that it's not a constant adrenaline, if had a major depression settle in and I feel like I'm struggling to simply function in the most basic way.
I've been trying to find ways to help. Gardening has been one, and dog rescue has been another. I've also learned that I HAVE to ask for help. Help with food, help with cleaning, help with my other kids. It's essential.
Long story long, when you are overwhelmed it's important to know that help is the key. You mention often how busy you are at the shop and I hope you can get help in so you can enjoy yourself again and do the things that make you happy.

Wonderful you have rediscovered horses Kaylee. You might find the' Happy Horse Happy Life' program interesting . Founded by Linda Parelli after separating from Pat Parelli last year. Her areas of interest are horse psychology, behaviuor and dressage in particular but down the natural horsemanship route. She has a huge interest in personal growth so has combined this in the program as well. Once I discovered natural horsemanship it blew my mind and after 21 years as a horse owner only wished I had found it sooner. Everything is done on the horses timeline and the rewards are phenomenal in what a horse will give you back- a true partnership. None of this yanking the head in to 'get in on the bit' and kicking to go and pulling to stop!!!

I completely relate to your experience. It is very difficult to scale up in this business. People think rare plant shop owners make tons of money. But if you subtract the loss, you are just making an average salary. Hence, I decided not scaled my business, after a horrendous loss of over $10k in dead imported plants due to heat and customs holding the shipment for no reason at all. That experience pushed me into two months of depression.

Equestrian here! I feel like you might benefit from looking into learning theory to sort those thoughts of what is ethical horse training and keeping. It helped me alot to make sense of things and also put a foot down for myself on what I would not like to take part in. Becayse yes, much horse training is traditionally done with negative reinforcement and even a bit of sometimes I'll applied punishment (not only ethically, but also from a learning and development standpoint),whilst with most other animals we now almost exclusively train with positive reinforcement. Not to say negative reinforcement necessarily is bad, but thinking through how animals learn and what effects how ethical training and keeping is helped me alot. I have lots of good tips for books/podcasts/videos etc if you want to look into it!

i used to ride horses and i learnt i think it was called parelli style (lol this was years ago forgive if ive got the name wrong). and it was quite different to the normal riding school style, i didnt really use any tack just a loosely tied rope around my horses neck and it was mostly about just shifting your body weight and changing your energy to let the horse know whether to slow down or speed up or change direction, etc. it takes training of the horse and you obviously you cant expect any horse thats used to being kicked or pulled on the bit to control it to listen to such subtle cues but i found it preferable to the tradiontal methods, may be something to look into

I also realized I am depressed when I realized that I no longer enjoy any of the hobbies that I used to enjoy. I, instead, pick up new hobbies and enjoy them for short periods of time and then lose interest again.
I'm trying to partake in the old hobbies to try and get back into them.

Everything you explained at the beginning- depressed without realising it and then processing the emotions, realising you're not happy when one day you all of a sudden decide to pick up an old hobby again. I feel that. Every word of it and I don't really know how to explain it either but I feel that. I hope you take your time and process and find joy again ❤️

There’s a TH-cam channel I really love from a trainer in Canada. Her name is Shelby Dennis. Highly recommend her content. She’s all about positive reinforcement and gentle techniques and has spoken about how equipment should not solve problems etc. her horses are adorable too.
Also, I second the sentiment that you really need to think about bringing in some help in the shop. I know you have good reasons to not but, Maybe you could work with a head hunter and maybe find someone who studied plants in school or something? Just thoughts. Want the best for you.

I definitely see you as a Dressage person 😂 Less an adrenaline junkie and more of a precision/perfectionist.
Also, yes, you should definitely be riding with like 90% seat and leg and 10% or less rein. Leg is mostly with your calves, with some light heel work in upper levels once you have the control to be able to use the aid gently, and while part of the slow down/halt/turn cue is pressure on the bit, most of it should be coming from the pressure in your seat and legs. I could go through the gaits and turning on my mare without touching the reins at all once I got her retrained to the proper aids. She was an ex-western horse and whoever transitioned her to English did a god-awful job and it took a lot of time to get her to relax. Riding is not meant to be making demands of our horses and pushing them around, it's working with them as a team, asking a question that you solve together. That second school you tried sounds like they're nice and gentle, I love to hear it

@@RobinrotFan I went up there a little anxious these cowboy dudes would treat their animals coldly but that wasn’t the case. My daughter has been riding most of her life and we always struggled to find people that treated their horses so well.

    1) I need the link to that shirt 🤞🏻
    2) what style are you riding now, and what type(s) of horse? I did a fair amount of hunter / jumper and trail riding, and a little western barrel racing and pole bending. My ponies were a Shetland mare and a Paint/Thoroughbred gelding!
    3) So happy you are taking time for you ❤️ sounds like you need it, you deserve all the best!

I am really happy you are reconnecting with your previous hobby. Thank you so much for being so open and share your feelings with us. Many years ago I was involved in a horrible terrorist attack and back then mental health was not so important. I have lived a whole life with PTSD and specially survivors guilt. Thank God after many decades l found a great doctor and a great PTSD therapist that were able to help me greatly. Gardening has been my favorite therapy and last year my niece got me into this beautiful world of tropical plants.
A couple of weeks ago I was watching a local plant auction (Fl j jungle ) and saw you were there for a few minutes, I got really excited to see you, I felt like I was at a concert with a celebrity. I really admire you and wish you the best. Blessings and hugs from the distance. 💚

    re: can't articulate
So I totally relate with what you said about your mental state. I'm going through the same thing. I'm high functioning as well, and you don't quite feel like yourself. That's totally normal to feel that way when you are depressed.
There is no one reason either, it's the combination of everything for me. Im currently seeking help and I totally understand what you mean by "can't quite articulate it". You don't have to. I totally get it and it's totally normal.
A healthy habit I've been doing to help me cope with it is to be on the water as much as I can and just be in my board, and just be at peace away from everything at least for that moment. It's been helping me ground myself.

Keep in mind, horses love showing. They are bred to be working animals, they love and thrive being worked! They love shows and pleasing us. It's not cruel to want to show horses. They actually love it! They really enjoy it. Works their mind and body is a way they enjoy! So keep that in mind! :) I have grown up riding and love horses as well!! They are the most amazing animals, and they are just so special! I am totally with u about loving to ride and loving horses! I relate 100%!!
