  • This short video was made by me on 23 June 2023--and apologies to everyone interested in my channel for the late posting--when I was on a visit to the United Kingdom. I had earlier in the day visited Powis Castle in Wales, where the artefacts stolen or otherwise carted home to Britain by Robert Clive, or Clive of India, are displayed, and on the way back I stopped in Shrewsbury where a statue of Clive still stands in the market square. This video is a short commentary on Clive and the statue.

I am loving this on the ground coverage of various European
(that includes those animal brits) monuments.

My heart sinks when i see modern commentary on Clive. This was mostly correct though. A few corrections and clarifications: He left 30m in his will. Which puts him nowhere near the top of the rich list. In fact he would struggle to a Premier league rich list with that money today. Also we should be very careful with Macauley. He was writing 60 years after the fact. Churchill called him a hack and Churchill was correct. As for Bandit. Only if you are happy to call every other Indian luminary a bandit. With the Marathas being the biggest bandits of all.

Somehow I don't think our civic statues and brown visitors mix very well.

I wonder if people passing by you while you were recording this video stopped and listened!

Shiraj was an spoiled cruel despot. Both to foreign traders and his own country men. Clive came from a modest family, became a clerk and rose to the occasion as a general. He was constantly denigrated by his noble born opponents but he worked hard for his achievements. Indian soldiers serving under the British, whether under the company or later the crown were assured a good pay and they were treated fairly as employees. This was not the case for most Indian armies serving under local rulers, it was not at all uncommon for an army to go rampant after a campaign because the ruler could not actually pay them the promised wage and were encouraged to go loot sometimes their own people. Since you mentioned opium: he was taking it to treat the pain from his gallstones, it was a common pain killer back then. Context is important. That statue should absolutely stay.

Get ready for India's claim for reparations. Going to be in the region of £800 trillion.

The reparations have never stopped. Even today we're giving millions in aid and funding their space program. The Brits seemingly have bottomless pockets..!
