    Virtual Reality is simply an experience that immerses you in another world.
    Augmented Reality is an experience where you can see the real world around you but there is also computer-generated visuals seen as an overlay.
    And mixed reality is an experience where similar to AR, there are computer generated visuals but they are immersed with the real world, a key aspect is that they are anchored and appear to be a part of the real world.
    I’m going to touch on VR a little but my focus is on AR and MR because I believe they have the broadest potential to impact life in the future.
    The origin of AR and VR trace back to the cinematographer Morton Heilig, who created the Sensorama in 1962.
    The Senorama was one of the earliest examples of immersive multi-sensory technology, and it was a motorcycle simulator featured a 3D film, stereo audio and it even simulated wind and aromas, incredible technology for 1962!
    Six years later in 1968, the Father of Computer Graphics Ivan Sutherland, and his student Bob Sproull invented the SWORD OF DAMOCLES, the first Virtual Reality Headset or Head Mounted Display, and was designed to help helicopter pilots land at night.
    Then in 1990, Thomas Caudell of Boeing first coined the term Augmented Reality when they were asked to develop a way to guide workers in the factory.
    And fast forward to today, where we are on the near the advent of the AR and VR era.
    There is an explosion of AR glasses or Smart glasses that are available or being released in the near future but I’m going to focus and the more high-profile developers and products.
    And the most interesting AR glasses to me are the ones Apple is working on.
    In October 2017, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the technology does not exist that would allow for the development of AR Smart glasses in a quality way.
    He went on to say that the company would not release an AR product until it could deliver a great experience, and also said that the field of view and quality of displays of existing Smart glasses are not up to what they would be satisfied releasing.
    In other words, when Apple finally releases an AR device, it will be incredible.
    The Hololens focuses is a mixed reality headset, release on March 30th, 2016 as a development addition. There is currently not a consumer version at this time.
    Interestingly, the HoloLens’ technology trace back to the Xbox box Kinect that was introduced in 2010.
    You see that technology in the Kinect that allows players to control videogames with their bodies, is used in the HoloLens to allow for users to control holograms.
    Magic Leap was founded in 2010 and has received investments from many big companies such as Google and Alibaba with a total of $1.4 Billion raised in total.
    In 2017, they announced their first product, the Magic Leap One, which features the glasses called light wear, a controller, built-in audio in the headband, a camera so you can take videos and pictures, a microphone for voice commands, and a computing platform called Lightpack.
    The ARkit is the set of software development tools for developers to build augmented-reality apps for iOS.
    It allows developers to create three-dimensional images in your world using visual inertial odometry, which harnesses your phone or tablet’s sensors to track your world and sense your device's orientation and position.
    ARCore was launched back in February and Google has been working with Various companies who are working on AR Apps, such as Sony, Porsche, among others.
    So it’s been a year since Apple ARKit was released and ARCore was recently released, and there are a handful of games so far but nothing groundbreaking just yet.
    The IoT is simply the physical objects that are connected to the internet, pretty much all are smart items, such as smart TVs, thermostats etc.
    Today there are over 23 BILLION items connected to the internet and that figure is estimated to rise to over 75 BILLION by 2025.
    5 G stands for 5th Generation mobile network, the 1st generation was used in the 1980’s and used analog protocols, the 2nd generation was used in the 90’s when networks changed to digital, and the 3rd generation came in 2001 and was the first mobile broadband-capable network and then the 4th generation that is common today came out in 2010 and is a True Mobile broadband network.

    Great video, I have been about thinking this for a while now, and i see a world where AR/MR replaces smartphones, TV’s, monitors, and basically most screens. Obviously not immediately, as even with convenience and more space, it will be a long while before AR will be able to compete with the best TV’s, but I am confident it will happen someday.

  • @kayrosis5523
    @kayrosis5523 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you might enjoy Dawn of the New Everything by Jaron Lanier, the guy who coined the term Virtual Reality and did a lot of stuff in that field in the 80s and 90s. He brings up some very interesting non-technical issues with VR, AR, and MR. The book is basically him saying "People are starting to look to VR and the like with visions of utopia. I was in that same spot 30 years ago, and oh how i wish it were that simple". Being one of the founding fathers of VR, yet also a self-described creative lunatic/hippie-mountain-man he offers a very interesting take on the world we find ourselves in.
    Myself though, I'm starting to look at these advancements with more trepidation than excitement. Yes, there are amazing possibilities just around the corner, but consider the world that needs to be built for having your hand lotion connected to the internet. Not the technical aspects, but the social, political, economic, and philosophical aspects.

    Really good video. The tech/geek side of me is excited for what this emerging technology can offer. The humanist/libertarian side of me is frightened to think how this technology can further manipulate/track/control us. The technology is not evil, but can be used for such. With RFID chips in everything, privacy is completely dead (it's already on life support.) And there are serious scientific concerns about being blanketed in 5g radio waves that may be carcinogenic. Does this amazing technology take us further down the path of social isolation/disconnect and dehumanization? Add sophisticated AI to the AR, and we are talking about a completely new "human" experience and relation to the natural world.
    Is this how Star Trek's Borg came into existence?

    • @nenagarcia2912
      @nenagarcia2912 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, we will go further down the path of depersonalization, new brain chemistry will come into play, social isolation. i can see this being damaging, as a form of extreme escapism

      It'll be here sooner for than 7 years, it's nearly here anyways. But VR and AR will not be mainstream/Practical for everyday use like mobile phones until 2030.
      Current limiting factors:
      FOV
      Weight
      Batterytime
      Adaptive eye depth mechanics (*e.g. the lenses moving further from your eyes to replicate looking into the distance or an object up close. Theres products working on this now)
      Real time eye tracking that reduces resolution outside of the eye focus zone to give performance gains of 30-60% (This will be a game changer)

    Artificial intelligence would have to grow leaps and bounds before AR is more than a novelty for the typical consumer. Most applications in this video can be done by pulling out a smartphone - AR would save a few seconds compared to that. What AR needs is to proactively give us information when relevant, and that requires artificial intelligence. Coupled with decent AI, AR will become INSANE when combined with portable high resolution brain scanners that are no more inconvenient than a baseball cap.

    I didn't like it I loved it... from the 90's I have always thought of a computer doing everything that a human wanted... ( I used to watch the Jetsons on cartoon network)
    Nowadays I think that humans could be able to go shopping if they want to, or they could send a list of what you want to buy and have it delivered to your door. Companies like Amazon could start a food shop that handles peoples orders, I know that they have already got a shop where you can take what you wish without paying personally for it, the total gets taken from your bank account as soon as you leave the shop. A good idea, but having a shopping center that brings a humans order would mean fewer hands would touch the order and people would live a much happier life.

    Seems ambitious to call this the next big thing, but perhaps 2030 is far enough out that they make something happen? Personally I think the nature of the hardware is what prevents it from being popular (apart from a niche hardcore group of users). It's just not casual-friendly to have to wear hardware, so unless it's made extremely seamless (a lightweight comfy pair of glasses might be enough) then it'll struggle to take off. Mostly I'm coming at this from the game industry perspective where quite a lot of effort has gone into VR gaming and yet it's fundamentally the hardware cost and clunkiness that causes it to be wrong for the average consumer. I mean there are some great experiences to be had there, it's just not for the Average Joe (and you have to make it for the Average Joe to really have it take off -- a bit like how Elon Musk has approached the problem of electric cars where he's gradually making them more accessible.)

We know that social media and tech have eroded away the very connections that make us enjoy live. We don't talk to each other and we don't listen to each other anymore. Yeah, I remember terminator too. The future was pretty bleak to say the least. No one wants to be recorded and posted to FB without their consent like with the Google Glass that came out. • @bihistrekani4787
      @bihistrekani4787 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      One way i would look at it, currently there are companies actively creating online data stream marketplace. what you can do is connect your smart devices/machines's sensory data to this market place and sell your data for hourly $ this in turn helps industries to get live data for much cheaper than normal way of getting data through surveying companies.
      IOT also communicates with machines and purchases through machines. For example, you have programmed your fridge to order coca cola and biscuits once the stock goes below certain number. This in turn orders from supplier and has it delivered to your door with any input from you. Lots of potential in IOT world.

      OP writes «take off»: it is only a recent development that "every grandparent in the world has to embrace a technology", and a detrimental one on quality, if beneficial for costs and development rate. So, do «[SOME] people really want their field of view etc.»: YES, absolutely. Because «outside enjoying nature» some people feel they are wasting time and want to be productive, and they may prefer having information on a headset, and being able to switch focus from surroundings to business at eye movement, instead of holding a book or other slab.

      @@ogs_Boga1900 : why «forced»? No applications? Information in front of you any time you need it? You mean all of your time you are kept busy with something urgent and would not be able to wedge in some business?

      Oh wow, what are the chances? Really enjoyed the video man, keep up the good work! Have you always wanted to do TH-cam? Most people around here either end up in the Navy or at one of the bases.

    People are already worried about their datas since the facebook scandal, I don't think they'll be happy when everything they wear starts sending information all over the place. I bet some guys will hack into a girl's cloths to know her bra size! lol

    LOL - great new tech, but nothing very meaningful to use it on.. Entertainment and shopping. How absolutely shallow. Great presentation as are all your vids.. Keep up the good work.
