Just wanted to point something out, there are actually 3 versions of the Fast3D microcode; the original Fast3D or "F3D" (which is what Super Mario 64 uses), F3DEX (which is what Banjo-Kazooie uses), and F3DEX2 (which is what Banjo-Tooie uses). F3DEX2 has by far the best performance, with significantly faster vertex processing compared to F3DEX, and a vertex cache of 64 instead of 32 when using the FIFO version (which is what SM64 uses). So if you ARE using F3DEX (without the 2), you might want to try using F3DEX2 for a further performance improvement.
EDIT: Vertex cache of 64 only when not using clipping, but everything else still applies.

This is really fascinating to me, because I got my masters in Computer Science with a focus in Game and Real-Time Systems, and I learned all about this kind of thing in a series of three game engine programming classes. What amazes me is how many of the features I was taught in this class--culling, reducing vertices, etc.--were not standard features in Mario 64. It's kind of a miracle it was able to run as well as it did, considering the lack of such features.

    • @KazeN64

some culling was used on select level geometries, but it really wasnt enough haha

  • @MattRoszak

This is really cool. I assumed that a lot of N64 games would have already used these optimizations, but I guess since Mario 64 was one of the first games developed, they hadn't mastered all of the tricks yet.

It may break the game... who knows? I'm not a modder. I just play video games and watch TH-cam for a living. It could work a bit better than the normal game, but the unoptimized level geometry thing makes me question if it'll even run a little smoother or not.

Im not sure how much of this post is meant to be taken seriously, but don’t discredit the talent or hard work of the OGs. The only reason we _have_ games today is because of them.
Brilliant and dedicated as he is, Kaze stands on the shoulders of giants, and if you think we’d be in a better place by dragging and dropping talent from one era into another hoping they’d be just as effective, you’re almost certainly mistaken.
You can respect someone’s work without deifying them, or downplaying the achievements of those who came before them. Kaze’s working in a different era, with different tools, and significantly more history to derive your hindsight from. Design as a field has evolved, and there’s no reason to believe the conclusions he’s come to today would still be reached back when this was all brand new.

That's actually what I thought this was when I clicked the video. My guess is, though, that in order for that to actually happen it wouldn't just be an adjustment or anything. Like here for example, in order to optimize the submarine area you would reduce the amount of polygons, and assign more culling and culling distances. You'd need to do that for the entire game, though I believe you could just get away with barely touching areas that never dip below 60 FPS to begin with. I imagine it'd take a bit of work.

the vertex merging thing would be nice if most RSP plugins would actually support flat shading

If Crysis had somebody like you optimizing it and getting rid of all the unnecessary background clutter that eats away at performance for no reason, we could run it on a Texas Instruments calculator.

I wonder what all it would take to make Myario 64 run at over 30fps. Even if it required low poly/LOD Mario at all times, an ever lower draw distance, even smaller textures, and levels that are more square, it would be interesting to see.

I know you've done something like this for star road in the past, but is there any way you could update that maybe? Just asking

Hello Kaze, I loved playing your hack Super Mario Bros. 64, I’m your huge fan as well of SM64 and SMB1, I think it would be fun if you did a remake of Super Wario Bros. for N64 (SMB1 hack starring Wario and Waluigi as protagonists villains, created by Googie Toons, also known as Victor Alonzo), Fantendo characters Walberto (a muscular and tall man who wear a crimson shirt and hat with the latter "A" upside down) and Wasparo (a tall man who wear a light orange shirt and hat with latter ''G’' upside down) could be added in the remake as playable characters along with Wario and Waluigi (except Mario and Luigi). Besides that I would like to see Alberto (a tall man who wear light blue shirt and hat) and Gasparo (a man who wears a brown jacket with an orange "G" on it on top of his khaki shirt) as a playable characters in the separate mods of SM64

What are the changes between the Fast3DEX engine and Mario 64's regular Fast3D engine that makes it a better renderer? Is it just more optimized using nintendo's microcode documentation or does EX add more features that Nintendo's Fast3D didn't have? Also this is extremely cool that it works without line doubling
