Damn! Me neither, and I was wondering what would it be like to have a game mix between Crusader kings and Total war series! And this is it! Gotta get this! I Love RTS games, this is a must have!
My greatest campaign was with the Mongol Empire. I've already had good a campaigns with Latins, Jerusalem, Portugal, Norway, Poland, Crete. What about you?
One of my favourite RTS games. I played it for hundreds of hours. This game has many mechanics you will not find in other games today, like the spy mechanics that was mentioned in the video. One mechanics can give you a really headache, if your king dies and you have no son. I could happen that parts of your kingdom will break away.
or that spies can invade ANY of your leaders, not like your spies when they recruit, so you can have the pope or a super skilled marshal which was there from the start just turn into an enemy spy, making you lose this person. Also merchants are rly broken. Played the demo for hours then the real game, half a year ago i bought it again on steam, had 1 good long run but coulndt play it afterwards because it got far too easy and repetetive
Best RTS i ever played. Balancing in Resources, Economy, Military etc. done right! Also, the OST is brilliant. One Borislav Slavlov made it. This man got hired by Crytek for the OST of the Crysis series and is now at Larian Studios in the same position (since Divinity 1).
Thank you for paying attention on this beautiful and one of the most underrated games. Knights of Honor community is not so big, but i expect that KoH2S will do great job. I recommend this game to everyone even today, you will not regret it. Also the music in this game is aweseome. Everyone who has played this game knows what I am talking about. We want Borislav Slavov in KoH2S :) Thanks again ! -Whispering: try to press enter while in the game and type "bskinti" or "bsrai" .... khm khm ;)
This game was such a big part of my childhood, it's truly special. It's incredible how they were able to create something so good that long ago. Can't wait for part 2
A tip to people playing this game. You can speed up time on the campaign map with the +/- buttons on the numpad up to x8. The game doesn't tell you anywhere. It might have in the manual to the physical copy, but not in game:)
This game heightened the bar little more for strategy games back then, an indie dev from Bulgaria made possible one of the best strategy games ever existed with an indie budget with not milking their customers like novadays. I am hopeful with the upcoming game, devs appear to stand true with the first game and developed further more but I hope company does not go full Paradox/Sega. Now the Studio is called Creative Assembly Sofia I guess. Music is in this game is fantastic. It is a must experience for every strategy buff. I am glad you covered the this gem.
12:12 "it's mostly down to the AI" as is the case for most single player strategy games unfortunately. Cause no matter how many features you tack on it'll be boring if the AI I'd brain dead. Which is probably why a lot of popular genre's either rely on the player making their own content with a little stimulation from the AI or just throw out the AI all together in favor for multiplayer
Very true. Its sad how little AI innovation is applied to RTS games apart from making it mimick perfect meta build orders (e.g. in aoe 2 de or Starcraft 2).
I like buying Old RTS games myself! As A strategy fan it really is a fun past time, and gives a certain amount of respect for developers that constantly tried different things. Man you have great amount of content and knowledge Of strategy and RTS games, as a Strategy fan myself ever since red alert 2, I can tell you have that same love of genre. Awesome channel, keep up the good work.
this is literally the entire embodiment of the time i spent with my dad ive played this game for over a decade now and still dont get bored of it cannot recommend an old rts with lesser graphics yet still more enjoyable than most modern strategy out there. literally been playing this since i was 7 and this game brings a tear to my eye
Knights of Honour 2 is one of those games you see on Steam where it's like "yeah I don't know that dev and it looks iffy" but if it's got the same pedigree as the original it might just be on my hotly anticipated list for this year!
Thank you! Thank you! I didn't know there is now a sequel to this masterpiece. I never understood how the formula with a Real Time Campaign was surprass by a Turn Base Campaign. I still remember the sensation of reacting in real time to a south invasion when you were concentrating in the north of your country. I hope that the AI is improved and they improve in their marketing.
Thanks for showing this off, Darren! This is the most excited I've been about an RTS in a decade. Literally, I haven't been this excited since Napoleon Total War. In hindsight, I wish I'd gotten into grand strategy with this game instead of Medieval 2. Keep up the good work!
Hey, mate. First, I would say that there is very little risk. You can pick up Napoleon for dirt cheap on a Steam sale. Second, I haven't played Warhammer, but if you've played and enjoyed the historical titles, then yes, Napoleon is worth it. Essentially, it polishes all of the mechanics from Empire but with smaller scope. It has a lot of good mini-campaigns with interesting twists. The Grand Campaign itself is a mini-campaign compared to most TW titles, but it's fun, which is the important part. I highly recommend you play with a mod, though. At least use DarthMod, which is essentially vanilla+. Napoleonic 3 is a good historical mod with a decent online community too.
Thank you for covering this old favourite of mine, hopefully the new purchases will fuel the development of the upcoming KoH3. Amazing gem from our Bulgarian neighbors.
Did you know Paradox also published a game quite similar to Total War: Warhammer? King Arthur II: The Role-playing Wargame. It's half Total War (with spells and a ton of myth units), half choose your own adventure. One of the great predecessors to the Total War series is 1994's Master of Magic. What units you recruit depends on the species of a given settlement, and there is a lot of neat magic you can use. This game had a big influence on Master of Orion II.
I preferred the original 'King Arthur: Role-playing Wargame' Collection as opposed to the sequel. Besides the interesting but more linear original campaign in it, the DLCs added a more open sandboxy campaign option, along with more faction and troop variety to play, and that's when it really hit the spot for me. My one big complaint was how the framerate seemed to be locked at a lowly 30fps no matter how fast your machine. I believe there was a cap on RAM usage, too, as many games did back then but there was a way to remove that if needed. I don't recall the mem limit being a problem, just the mediocre framerate. Still interesting, unique, and the open campaign was cool.
Hey thank you so much for highlighting games like this. I've never even heard of this title and it looks right up my alley. I'm a big fan of channels like MandaloreGaming and I would love if you reviewed more 90s/2000s games. There's so many of them on GOG and Steam but I don't even know where to start to look for the good stuff.
I used to play this all the time back in the day. I was super stoked when I saw you video saying a sequel was coming. Unfortunately, I'm worried they wont build on the original concepts but will try to mimick the market as it is now. We'll see.
I grew up with this. And loved this game. The only thing I always hated was the win conditions. You can aim for religion, politics etc. But to reach those you are forced to conquer at least half of the map. Something you don't have to do in Civ Games for example. Besides that, it is a great game.
What do you mean with win conditions? I thought It were Just the small win, when you have all the kingdom advantages or taking ALL the map for your kingdom. Is there other way to win?
In the name of all that is holy, how did you find this game? This was made in a basement by 10 - 20 people and I love it. Ahh, the olden days Black seas studios making me proud to be Bulgarian.
And the studio is by no means famous, but it became Creative Assembly Sofia and worked on Total War: Rome II - Empire Divided , Total War: Rome II - Rise of the Republic, Total War Saga: Troy.
I sometimes do throwback thursday streams where i play old classics, and KOH was recommended, loved it! I also worked at CA during the time they acquired Sofia studio so had briefly heard about it that way
I've been playing this game since 2010 and It is still my top one game of all time. Im really happy to see someone finding this game and having fun. I introduce this to every strategy loving friends if i had a chance. The 2d graphic and the theme works perfectly. Me and my friends have been waiting for KOH2 for years. Hope the new game still have the essence of the classic one. This is a great video to introduce new comers.🤘peace ✌️
12:40 - "anyways, speaking of multiplayer. It's a great shame as well that there's no multiplayer campaign in this." --- Was saddened to hear this, as I quite liked the game. Didn't look too complicated, didn't look too simple.
Knights of Honor is a true gem of a game! I remember how great time had during my first and only playthrough few years ago... I'll give it another go probably very soon.
This was really fun indeed. And I just hope for the same wishes you made for the sequel, especially in terms of Multiplay Campaign and better pace. Maybe they can achieve it this time around. :)
How could you not show the intro screen, its one of the highlights of this game ^^ Anyways, really warms my heart to see people still talking about this game.
Sadly too late for me to realize this wonderful game exist, but better late than never, this is sale in steam right and no brainer i grab it. Thanks to your vid.
Total War has so much to learn from this game, its a classic and i even startet playing it in 2016 when i came the first time in contact with the game. and i LOVED it edit: i just want to point out the amount of detail you cen get from the Campaing map, progress of a province, Unit compositions of Armys, Wealth and so on- its just crazy well done
I played this game so much since i was a kid it's not even funny. There are so many cool things that could happen , like your spy becoming the king of a rival kingdom and stuff like that. I loved this game and i honestly can't believe they are making another one.
If we're talking about old-school classic strategy games, then we have to talk about Bungie's "Myth" series. Eschewing the usual "build base, harvest resources" of other strategy games of the time, "Myth: The Fallen Lords" gives you a handful of troops at the start of each mission, and that's usually all you have for that mission! It really makes you value each swordsman, each archer, especially considering surviving soldiers pass on from mission to mission, gaining experience and becoming more powerful! I'm really not doing the series justice at all, but I think it would be great to see an episode about it here!
One of my favourites from my childchood was Pacific Warriors 2. Very simple game: it tells the story of US-Japanese war in the Pacific that you can play from both sides. Each side has 25 missions for which you get points depending on how well you perform to upgrade your planes: a fighter and a bomber, with more machineguns or better maneuverability. Controls are very simple - no overcomplicated BS like in World of Waplanes. Missions are very varied and most of them are based on the most famous battles such as invasion on Philipines or battle of Midway. You have escort, scouting, invasion, bombardment etc. missions with both ground and sea targets alongside the aerial combat. But if you prefer something with a bigger focus on strategy then Empire Earth is another classic RTS I played when I was 6 years old - one of my first games ever played alongside Shogun Total War and Civilization III. It's essentially Age of Empires but instead you play through all the ages of human history - from prehistory to future age with robots. In a custom game you can pick in which era you want to start in and which era will be the last if you want to leave out the robots and skip on the prehistory for example. There are major single player campaigns with various missions set in different time periods like Roman empire, Wilhelm's conquest of England or WWI.
Looks like they might have campaign multiplayer in the sequel, from the steam page: "Robust Multiplayer - Join with multiple friends to take on the challenges of medieval Europe" Definitely one of my most favorite games of all time. When I saw, maybe a couple years ago, that there's a possibility for a sequel or spiritual successor in the works, I got really excited. Glad to see it finally coming to fruition, and hopefully it's every bit as great as the original. Also hoping for a more challenging way to play, since the original KoH can get pretty easy, even when you put yourself as a disadvantage.
I'm gonna take this opportunity to shill one of my favorite hidden gems of all time, Original War. The game can be clunky and old but it does so many things incredibly well. The premise is that the Americans and Russians are fighting over a special resource by time travelling back to super early stone age. Every unit is named with stats and if they die, they die for the whole campaign. You cant produce more units in matches so you have to be careful with your units and find ways to supplement them like teaching cavemen to use Ak47s or using drones. It's a really unique game that history has forgotten.
One of my favorite games of all time, buying the game even just for its soundtracks will worth it, trust me. also by KOH II on horizon my dream come true.
Are you joking :D 11.03.2020 :D KoH review :D Finally someone recognizes the game for its superiority, and he never played the game before :) Joking, thank you for putting up this game to the public it was a blast playing it back in the days.
if you're into grand strategy with real map movement and real time battles happening on the same map as the strategic layer (think ancient/medieval Supreme Commander but bigger with the same kind of zoom levels) try Longbow Games' "Hegemony" series.
The old Knights of Honor is so good, it stands head and shoulder with Total War Shogun 1 and 2 and Total War Medieval 1 and 2. It's just the "90s top down" brother that was born first is all.
Games from 10 years ago aren't old. Thats Skyrim, Fallout 3/New Vegas, Bioshock, Witcher 2, Red dead redemtion, Assassins creed 2, Dragon Age Origins. They are more or less the very same games as of today only with older graphics and often smaller worlds/maps/levels but with deeper gameplay and stories in many cases:P You need to go a little further back to find the older titles which differ from the norm and had so much innovative and original ideas. But sadly often comes with clunky cameras or controls. I would recomend Fable the lost chapters, Age of empires 2, Jade Empire and Okami if you haven't played any of them though as they are all easily available and playable on PC and all hold up to this date both gameplay wise and graphically. There are tons of other games I could recomend but they are hard to run properly on modern systems and harder on the eyes in 2020:) I love Knights of honor and play it to this date. I'm really excited for Knights of Honor 2, coming 2020 presumably.
@@PlaylistGeneral Yeah a little. But most games have barely changed in 10 years, they have just gotten a little more eye candy:) I can buy a brand new AAA game today and it will more or less play and function exactly like a 10 year old game only with some better graphics and slightly bigger worlds/levels.
As for suggestions on games, well.. Stronghold 1 & Crusader 1, though MandaloreGaming recently-ish covered it, still, it's getting a new game soon, Command & Conquer 1 & Red Alert 1 have been teasing at its remaster/remake for a while, might be nice to shine a light on that, see if we can get some of that old RTS back if/when it does hold up
Wars and Warriors: joan of arc, a little bit over 10 years but still a true gem and very ahead of its time for 2004, never understood why the game never got popular.
It saddens me that I never came across this game as a kid, I used to be (and still am for the most part) very fond of medieval kingdom building games with RTS combat, I remember spending entire days playing Lords of the Realm and AoE 1 and 2, I would have absolutely adored this game as a kid. I probably wouldn't be able to get into it now, as having experienced games like Total War has kind of spoiled me, but I am very much excited for the upcoming sequel, I hope it stays true to what old players liked about the original.
Ah, those were the days...Play for 12 hours, click Exit - "You are leaving so soon?"
The advisor has so much warmth
I still play it often, one week my wifi was down and I had the game installed, I played it for so long it's ridiculous
I actually don't have sound and I really miss the advisor and the calm music, but oh well.
"Gods I was strong then!"
@@RepublicOfPlay yeah, advisors are easy to mess up, to make annoying, but this game seems to have done it really well
First of all: glad to see people acknowledging Knights of Honor! Secondly: I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS FINALLY GETTING A SEQUEL HOLY SHI-

edit: i just want to point out the amount of detail you cen get from the Campaing map, progress of a province, Unit compositions of Armys, Wealth and so on- its just crazy well done
played this game when i was 15...now am 30 old and still enjoy the game till this day!
Thanks, I never figured out how to get the special ressources! But now I know what to do. ;)
Yeah I had to google it, couldnt find it out in game
This sounds great, I'm sold
Great little Total War lite game. Glad it's getting some love.
brooooo finally someone brings some light on this gem
i can recommend everyone to try the mod for it muskets of honor
its even better than the orginal
I played this game so much since i was a kid it's not even funny. There are so many cool things that could happen , like your spy becoming the king of a rival kingdom and stuff like that. I loved this game and i honestly can't believe they are making another one.
Even though the original is pretty old now. It still looks so beautiful
Widescreen mod also includes HD stuff, I think. Might be new textures.
I'm really not doing the series justice at all, but I think it would be great to see an episode about it here!
hope they follow your suggestions for the new release. looks like the game has a lot of potential. thanks for the video!
Looks like they might have campaign multiplayer in the sequel, from the steam page: "Robust Multiplayer - Join with multiple friends to take on the challenges of medieval Europe"
Definitely one of my most favorite games of all time.
Videos about old strategies? I'm totally in.
It's a really unique game that history has forgotten.
imperator rome mechanics should be like this
I have this game. Just hadn't dived into it much. Thx
One of my favorite games of all time, buying the game even just for its soundtracks will worth it, trust me. also by KOH II on horizon my dream come true.
I miss this, finally I found the name! Thank yoouuuu
Can't wait for the sequel to be released.
I also love how the rebellion grows and get stronger over time rather then spawning in as an huge army or is just killed in a suicidal siege.
One of the best RTS/STrategy game!
Best Soundtrack ever! Worth buying it just to listening to xD
1st game I've been excited for in a long time.
Are you joking :D 11.03.2020 :D KoH review :D Finally someone recognizes the game for its superiority, and he never played the game before :) Joking, thank you for putting up this game to the public it was a blast playing it back in the days.
Still play a campaign for every few years or so, great game and absolutely recommended 👍🏻
if you're into grand strategy with real map movement and real time battles happening on the same map as the strategic layer (think ancient/medieval Supreme Commander but bigger with the same kind of zoom levels) try Longbow Games' "Hegemony" series.
This should be the longest sentence I've ever read
There is the same game but in the Napoleonic era, I can't remember the name though...
This game was such a hidden gem
So many hours I spend in this game, such a great game for that time and so underrated
How did I not know about this game?!
There are tons of other games I could recomend but they are hard to run properly on modern systems and harder on the eyes in 2020:)
I love Knights of honor and play it to this date. I'm really excited for Knights of Honor 2, coming 2020 presumably.
Sorry dude but I think by this point, more than 10 years is starting to get a little old haha

Yeah a little. But most games have barely changed in 10 years, they have just gotten a little more eye candy:) I can buy a brand new AAA game today and it will more or less play and function exactly like a 10 year old game only with some better graphics and slightly bigger worlds/levels.
This games is 16 years old.
You should play Imperial Glory, great game
Wow wtf, this looks awesome, the gameplay looks great.
As for suggestions on games, well.. Stronghold 1 & Crusader 1, though MandaloreGaming recently-ish covered it, still, it's getting a new game soon, Command & Conquer 1 & Red Alert 1 have been teasing at its remaster/remake for a while, might be nice to shine a light on that, see if we can get some of that old RTS back if/when it does hold up
Just got this game on steam for 2 dollars it so good. Man I cant wait for the second one.
Please cover more games like that, thanks
Wars and Warriors: joan of arc, a little bit over 10 years but still a true gem and very ahead of its time for 2004, never understood why the game never got popular.
LOL Now *this* takes me back. Back to my early gaming days. Good times, good times.
I remember using one general with a full group of Wales longbowmen to conquer half of the map before the final version of the game.
Huhh...Knights of Honor video...nice surprise :D
Was such a good game in my teens so was mtw1
