As a 56 year old, I MISS MY COUNTRY. I guess that I was rare, in that I was taught all of the good, bad and the ugly about our country's history. I was taught in a fair and balanced way. I was also taught home economics, shop class, basic economic skills (how to balance a budget and a checkbook) and I also was taught in current issues class how to debate without animosity. I'm very glad that I had the opportunity to homeschool my children...as even in the early 2000s, my children weren't even taught how to make change in a simple transaction.
A number of years ago, a friend in Oregon told me that the public schools were not going to teach cursive writing. That changed the following year. I guess they figured that there was no need to sign a check or an electronic document. Technology is making us stupid and lazy. I try to write out math equations, but spell check is not helping my spelling abilities.
Trump supporters are not far right. There are some far right Trump supporters, but many are moderates who left the Democrat party when they went insane.
There is something Mr. Haidt is not considering about his metaphor about the two groups of red and blue sailors on a sinking ship. His point was that if they don't work together the ship will sink. But what if the blue sailors WANT the ship to sink. And are actively working to make it sink. Wouldn't the red sailors have to fight to stop them from this self destructive insanity?
@@mrnibelheim in this case the ship is the Constitution. They can simply hop onto the deck of a new and better utopian ship. What the new ship consists of I'm not sure they know. But that does not concern them
PERFECT POINT.....The Red sailors in our case are doing what Megyn is saying...begging and then giving in.....to solve the problem....WE THE PEOPLE need to step in and get rid of everyone in Gov't just like the Declaration of Independence says ....TO ALTER OR ABOLISH.....ABOLISH...TO TERMINATE !
Trump fought back against the left, loudly/clearly shed light on them & their insanity… as Megyn says she wants to. Yet Megyn won’t/can’t fully endorse/embrace him. Megyn is fighting for her children’s future.
However, this is how the two radical extremes of a society recruit more moderates to their brown shirt vs black shirt rock throwers. He is correct. Look at WW2. In the 20s and 30s the Communists and the Fascists were rioting in the streets of Europe and even the US/Canada/Mexico. Normal folk looked and said, this is scary...they are nuts. Eventually EVERYBODY was drawn into shooting with one extreme or the other. We and the Brits joined with the Communists (yeah) against the Axis and several other nations that allied as Fascists. So this is the patterns of force.
@@STho205 In WW2 Both Russia’s Communists & Germany’s National Socialists were leftists. As was China’s Mao & Italy’s Mussolini. Since the war leftist media & academics tried mightily to rebrand Nazis & Fascist as Conservatives.
Megyn's respectful, but hard pushback on Haidt was GLORIOUS. Thank you, Ms Kelly, for demonstrated old-fashioned journalism... something that no one in the mainstream media is capable of doing anymore. THIS is why I watch your podcast instead of CNN and MSNBC.
@@jeffmartinaz It's somewhere in there. He was trying to basically imply both sides are inflicting equal damage and escalating equally in the culture/economic wars resulting in polarization. He asked for the people on the right to pull back, while noting the large portion of the left that won't listen to reason and won't pull back. Megyn posed the obvious question there and stuck with it.
@@laniefeleski7288 - Exactly. She used the Gov. DeSantis/Disney dust-up as an example and then repeated it with her woad face on. Jonathan conceded and said he was continuing to research.
The point here, for me, was that it’s up to moderates to Build That Bridge.” To lean right or left renders the individual unbalanced. In newspeak there’s all this jargon about “centering. Finding your center.” Balance. Yet, in politics, if we don’t align with the left or right we’re the problem? Water seeks it’s own level. Nature seeks equilibrium. Centered. Balanced.
I do like the professor and I have been following him for a long time. but, he has a huge blind spot when it comes to left and right. Trying to equate the power that the left has to what the right has is obscene. The radical progressives own the the higher education system, they own middle and elementary education systems. And who knew (Actually everybody knows) They've owned the school boards and the teachers unions since the early 1970s. That's why we have A crisis of little girls who don't know that there are little girls anymore. That's not my only issue, but it is a huge example. The right has nothing to do with dictating education or race on society. This has been the work of the democrats (i.e liberals/progressives)
There was an article before that said the woke stuff was being paid by Chinese companies. So wokeness Is funded heavily by them. And look at people like the young turks. Funded by middle Eastern companies. Unlimited funding. No risk of losing
Agreed! and it's the one issue that's alarming moderates uniting on all sides. The far left has gone too far shifting the " proverbial line in the sand" and it appears the moderate left has seen no choice but to ally with the right... at least through the mid terms.
Jonathan Haidt, among others, sees an equivalency between the far left and the far right. What are the numbers? How many are on the far left and how many are on the far right? I doubt if they are equivalent. This supposes any three people can agree on a definition for either the far left or the far right. By any definition, how many members of the Biden administration are far left? How many members of the Trump administration were far right?
The far right has other tactics: 1) March against minorities (Charlottesville) and increased hate crimes , 2) Jan 6th white house coup attempt, 3) Corporate far right buying residential real estate and raising rents through the roof, 4) Keeping interest rates so low - money is essential free for corporations to speculate, and 5) Oh, and, Iraq/Afghan wars (yes, both sides implicated). Just an examples. Both sides are problematic. No one is innocent.
As someone who is a 36 year old carpenter, voted for Obama 2×'s and Trump 2×'s I really really disagree and I am borderline offend by this guy calling me an authoritarian OR far right. I am so much closer to a center right moderate. I believe in America First and to me that means bringing manufacturing jobs back to America and to stop being the world police. I don't believe in abortion on demand or as birth control but at the same time I don't think a ban on abortion is good for this country either. I believe we all have the same opportunity even though we don't have the same circumstances. I do recognize it's harder for some than others class being the biggest factor and many other middle of the road rational thoughts
Good point of view, thanks for sharing. I imagine most Americans agree with nearly everything you've said.... and even voting for Obama twice LOL which I believed was the right decision for that time too.

Megyn I was proud of you when you called him out when he seemed to say that the way to respond to attacks is to cower and surrender. In a real battle when Jonathan Haidt marches across the battlefield with a white flag in his hand to reason with the enemy, the enemy will shoot him full of holes.
I agree with these responses to your guest. His thinking is flawed in that he believes these haters will come around. They won’t. I understand his wanting to find an alternate solution but sadly, there isn’t one. We must fight back.
he's not saying to surrender but to change the underlying structures that cause this in the first place. What Megyn is calling for is more escalation which will not fix the problem but just make you feel better.

The truth is we can't have an honest conversation about anything without the consequences of offending or being offended. We are a society of grown children who operate emotionally, illogically, irrationally and work harder to dodge accountability rather than just admitting when we are wrong and accepting correction. We are a country that double downs on the wickedness, stupidity and bad decision making that has gotten us into this current social and political mess. That's the 'collapse is inevitable' position, and I think it's likely to happen. Even so, one can't give up, and it's vital it to give it all we have to resist collapse into hot war, but resist in a way that at least has a chance of succeeding. Merely duking it out or being mild pushovers won't suffice. Some balance of the two is the only way. Beyond that I don't pretend to have any answers. I'm pacifistic, but if someone attacks, the right to self-defense is fundamental, unless you're Socrates or Jesus, whom they killed. @47:12 Haidt: "...escalation of weaponry and so what we're now seeing which really alarms me is things like the Texas abortion law and I think the Florida -- you know the law we're talking about here -- I believe they have provisions by which anyone can bring a lawsuit against a citizen, a teacher, a doctor. This is a huge escalation in the culture war this means that now people doing their job have to worry that they could suddenly be sued by a bunch of activists on the other side even if they've done nothing wrong." This form of Lawfare is nothing new. Democrats were pushing this as a strategy to indirectly ban guns by suing the gun manufacturers and dealers out of business. In response, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act became federal law in 2005. There may have been earlier instances. Aside: I strongly oppose this form of Lawfare - our legal system is already too much "How much justice can you afford?". Plus it effectively moves policy decisions from the legislatures to a judge and jury. As we kept getting reminded, judges are increasingly openly political and the supposedly unbiased jury is anything but.
Absolutely...Jonathan explains it so well....Meghan thank you for being you and doing the reporting which is truthful and honest and insperational that not all are insane in all the corruption of Values and Morality...

It was not planned and I hope it doesn’t come to it, but Kent State 1970.
changing the architecture is a good idea but the foundation of a person is the most important thing...leaving Christianity and God out of the picture in my opinion is the biggest problem.... this is a spiritual war and you can't pin it on physical causations... we need revival and a spiritual awakening and perhaps that is why all off this is happening... too much money, people don't feel the need for God and no humility... that is a huge problem in our Society. Not worded well but maybe a hint of what I'm feeling. Loved this whole conversation!

When Haidt cites circa 2008-2009 for the tipping point with social media, he is neglecting that that was also the time of the Great Recession. Everyday conservatives were furious at the betrayal by the institutional Republican Party. They were then furious that there was no justice Democrats, who too often rewarded the guilty. The people involved in this were older -- probably some in their 40s with most over 50. My experience at that time is that if they used social media, it was largely limited to family, especially grandkids. Trump was not a good user of social media, but then only 2% of people registered with Twitter are regular users. I think it was the big rallies and time on TV that mattered. When he claims that Trump was the first to understand the power of social media, he is ignoring the 2008 Obama campaign that made heavy use of the Internet -- if you think that that tech didn't qualify as social media, be aware that they were arranging meet-ups, keeping in contact with potential voters, rapidly distributing talking points and counter-points, ...
I'm English. Few people here trust the BBC anymore. Project Fear, showed how ideologically Left Wing they are. Thank god for the internet and our new GBNews channel. The truth is out there? Paul 🙂
In Haidt's analogy of the blue and red teams on the ship, the ship's damage is incidental to the teams fighting. That's not what's happening in our current culture. Western civilization is actively being dismantled by the 'blue team'. They are holing the ship, to continue the analogy. So, before you can save the ship (our civilization) the blue team have to be stopped. Being nice isn't going to cut it. That's why the red team need to step up their game and fight back. If blue team were totally obliterated, we'd sail on quite happily into a glorious future.
Part of the problem is reflected in Jonathan's statement about the failures of institutions, "some reports are true and some are not" without providing any examples of either instance. Just put the statement out there with no evidence and then claim the moral high ground against anybody that would dare suspend disbelief.
Love Jonathan. He was one of the first to sound / articulate the alarm bell when this titanic / ship of state began entering the ice fields of post modern America. Stupidity is what happens when everyone insists on lying / denying constantly to ourselves. And what do we lie about constantly? IMO, equality. Yes… EQUALITY!!! People may be created equal but cultures are definitely, obviously not. Yet we lie to ourselves that they’re all equally good. They’re not. It’s not even close. Some cultures are very good because bring security, stability, progress, very low rates of crime or corruption, and general prosperity. These are cultures that people migrate toward. Other cultures produce insecurity, scarcity, fear, stagnation, decline. People migrate away from these cultures. See if you can figure out which ones are which.
I’m sorry I can appreciate Jonathan’s viewpoint and his concerns of escalation and an even quicker way to the self destruction of our country but I have to agree with Megyn here. And I’m actually pleasantly surprised she sounds like a formidable aggressive but steady force. Some might say this guy is an example of the wussification of the men in our society. We’re at a point where he needs to step aside a bit, just a bit and let the opposing side to Leftist progressivism and the Woke/socialist ideology repel aggressively on the ideological and conversational front, i.e. don’t sit back and speak up and call them out on their policy positions whenever we get the chance. Sorry but we’re at that stage.
As usual the middle path might be best. It's not either/or, it's both/and. By that I mean a balance between the war analogy and the peace analogy. It's going to take strength, but also some wisdom. Mohamed Ali didn't try to pummel his opponents continually. He danced and bobbed. What the balance is, we'll have to work out as we proceed. I completely agree with Jonathan that the world has changed for the worse (an understatement). The solutions to our problems aren't just one tactic, but a combination employed with passion and with as much love as we can muster. Our ability to debate pleasantly while destroying the illogic of the illiberal may be the key. Return love for hate. Kill'em with kindness as you destroy their intellectual positions, positions which are generally weak. At the same time, display the kind of passion Megan is expressing. The Left is out of line and must be stopped, but we need to think carefully about how we do it.
Of course, if they start trying to physically harm us, there is the right to self defense, in which case per force we plummet into a hot civil war. Currently we're in a hot cultural war. But the idea is to avoid a physically enacted hot war because it could easily destroy millions of us on both sides.
@@xrxs1020 well that sounds nice and I’m not disagreeing that the way you’re talking about is the preferred way. Hi, Megan we really enjoyed your show with Jonathan Haidt, I will be looking for his books, to buy and to check out from the library. I also watched you on Fox and was sorry to see you leave, but I'm sure that you did what was best for you and your family. Will be looking forward to hearing your show on Sirius/XM. What you said about the news getting people upset and causing division is right on. I don't know if you've had this individual on yet, but could you do an interview with Douglas Murray? I am reading his book: "The War on the West", and plan to either buy or check out his other books. All these types of books are not easy to read, and I can only absorb so much, but they help me in my writing letters to the editor of my local paper. I do it to get something off my chest and make people think. I only concentrate on local issues. Thanks, again, a faithful listener
Thank you Megyn I love your show! I have four kids 18-29 years old. They all grew up during the age of video games and the internet. My two sons became gamers to the point of addiction. The oldest flounders because he lives his life around gaming. Our girls are active on social media, one flourished while the other was ostracized to the point of self harm. I can't turn back time but I can urge others with young children. Please heed all the warnings and keep your kids off video games and social media.
I feel proud I got my boys riding without training wheels quickly-they were the fastest kids in their classes in prek1 and kindergarten, and they were able to stop and turn from danger without hurting someone else. It reminds me of when my friend and I were in college roller blading and kicking a 40” playground ball at each other-we didn’t fall, we actually just became better skaters-so true with kids-thanks for re-emphasizing this! JP also reminded me of this and now I see more ways I can let them help.
We continue to disregard the importance of raising our children; the humans who will be our leaders. As Dr. Laura once said, “quality time”with your child is a necessity; however, one needs a “quantity” of time with them, before quality time can ever happen. Feminism has done a disservice to our human nature and evolutionary history, in my opinion. Oh the societal trends and how we follow along…
When it comes to people in positions of power, wealth, and influence, I think what most drives Middle American anger is the perception that the powerful, the wealthy, and the influential never have to pay a penalty for lying, never have to pay a penalty for being wrong, never have to pay a penalty for punching down at people who work for a living, and never have to own up to their mistakes.

I am not in agreement with this gentleman. First I do not agree that dems are more rational about things. They may talk but they usually discuss how to lie and mislead the public.
So much great information today. Many of us seasoned parents have felt this culture imploding for quite some time. I connect all with the frog in the pot of hot water, turning up the heat fable. As far as looking over your kids shoulder Meghan, you have to do it. Its really your job. The key is snooping to know what is going on and then letting the floor fall out from under them safely so they can learn the lesson while they are young and you control the punishment they justly and age appropriately deserve. My kids are productive young adults that gave us a run for our money and now 5 grandkids which the adult children seem to be raising very similar to the way they were raised. That’s all ‘pat on the back’ we need. PS my kids never knew how I knew all the stuff I ended up knowing. That is just as important. It makes for great table talk when they are adults and they can crack a beer with you too. LoL
Great show Megyn. I have been concerned about our political chasm and about social media for a long time. Relatively recently I have been listening to Jonathan’s thoughts on these issues and his observations of the great harm social media has contributed to our deep divide and and perpetrated on our children. It really frightens me. I am not sure if we will survive this, especially when our so called leaders continue to exploit social media and exacerbate the partisan divide for their own personal benefit. I am not hopeful, but sincerely hope I am wrong.
Haidt blames technology, not teams. OK. He says smart phone tech allows everyone to have their own story, undermining our attachment to one shared national story that binds everyone together. OK... But, I don't see millions of personalized stories; I see only two metanarratives: the 1619 story and the 1776 story. The former is an attempt to subvert and repudiate America's core mythology and to replace it with a new story that demands a revolution in America's values and institutions. The latter story affirms the myths that uphold America's founding values and institutions. Am I missing something? Haidt seems like he's making false equivalences here or like he's failing to notice things that would require him to say things that would get him into trouble. Even the personalized stories are sorted into dehumanizing identity labels that are components of the 1619 story -- there's nothing individualistic or personalized about any of it. It's a totalitarian mythology about sinful collectives versus sacred (victim) collectives.
You can't make a reasonable case for counter force with someone who actually believes the force is equal from both sides. It isn't. Compromise has not worked. They are bullies, and bullies see compromise as weakness.
Every country around the world has adopted social media technology, not only America. I travelled across Japan and Russia in 2019. They were both stable and normal. Social media didn't ruin them. I find it hard to accept that technology is a major variable here. Far likelier, America has for many many decades had a worsening conflict between two value systems and social media gave the right wing one final chance to expose & fight back and as a result America is one of the few Western countries with two genuinely opposed factions, whereas most other Western countries are sliding into authoritarian progressivism with no actual opposition (like in Canada and UK). Japan and Russia both have dominant conservative factions, hence why social media did not destabilize them. It's not the technology's fault, it's our value systems that determine these outcomes.

Jonathan is very smart but he does NOT understand fighting back. He is great at sharing the insights but he himself does nothing to fix the issues even at his own school. He’s a great intellectual but won’t seem to actually organize any counterforce as he says and actually pushback.
It's called self-preservation. As a college professor, myself, I'm not going to fight the admin over ideology I know I cannot ever change. He's doing so much more than you or I by putting himself out there like this. His university is a huge left-leaning school. He advocates leaving up to the lawyers in some foundation he's associated with... Nothing makes the Lawyer laden left more happy than to litigate. I agree with Megyn's gut on this one. the left will think twice If there are consequences involved with cancelling someone, just look at Net Flix and Disney.
After having Dole, Bush II, McCain and Romney as the Republican presidential nominees, most republicans were tired of milquetoast Neo-Cons and ripe for someone outside the box that might actually stand firm on issues - hence Trump. Not that I always agreed with him, but he seemed willing to fight the Left for once.

The people Jonathan Haidt observes as being social media abusers are adults, but they are not mature. They act like children because they are immune to consequences. They are irresponsible because they are allowed to evade responsibility for their actions on social media.
Great discussion about what our society is going through. I am left leaning and utterly appalled by what some of the far left deem appropriate. Attacking people, not on what they have done, but the color of their skin and shape of their genitals in the hopes that it will some how end racism.

Exactly.
Interesting thought! But why, do you think, should the blue sailors want the ship to sink? Won't they fear going down with it?

I don’t remember the “far right” burning and looting cities. Doctor Strangelove did not pass the test.
I don't remember that either. We can't BOTH be wrong!
Me either….All three of us can’t be wrong
The far right has other tactics: 1) March against minorities (Charlottesville) and increased hate crimes , 2) Jan 6th white house coup attempt, 3) Corporate far right buying residential real estate and raising rents through the roof, 4) Keeping interest rates so low - money is essential free for corporations to speculate, and 5) Oh, and, Iraq/Afghan wars (yes, both sides implicated). This is a huge escalation in the culture war this means that now people doing their job have to worry that they could suddenly be sued by a bunch of activists on the other side even if they've done nothing wrong."
This form of Lawfare is nothing new.
As we kept getting reminded, judges are increasingly openly political and the supposedly unbiased jury is anything but.

lol the denying of FACTS isn't limted to "left wing". Hardcore on either side have a lot more in common with each other than the 90% of us in the middle.
It’s the collapse of the social contract.

Thank you for your take on things

LoL
They are using language to normalize deviance.
From the launch of political correctness a door was opened to bad actors who are now using our language against normal, regular people.
Excellent segment...
Amazing guest!
Yes Megyn!
Love you!
He is so articulate in his understanding of that time of drastic change in our society. Great episode
So would Japan and Russia be considered feminist countries?
@@jaredmbennett No, in fact Russian and Japanese societies are very patriarchal
Yes, the tower of Babel is a perfect story for what is happening. God was telling the people you can't build or work your way to Him. Faith is how you come to a one relationship with Him
The inmates are running the asylum. 😡
Great Leonardo Da Vinci said; Those who live in fear will die of fear!
Great discussion 👍
wonderful conversation. TY M
At 45:15 Megan is fire. Love that woman. 1:14 too. It's not that I necessarily agree with her, it's that her mind is so damn beautiful at that point. It's her eyes. There are bright lights, and Megan is one of the brightest.
Uniquely Stupid ! ? 😁👍Yes, we are...
I wouldn't sacrifice my career and income just to try to make a point with people who will not listen.
He advocates leaving up to the lawyers in some foundation he's associated with... Nothing makes the Lawyer laden left more happy than to litigate. I agree with Megyn's gut on this one. the left will think twice If there are consequences involved with cancelling someone, just look at Net Flix and Disney.
@@jeffmartinaz he should be because if HE cant or won’t do it, why does he think it will ever change? Think that over for a bit….
A person doesn’t “become” a controlling crazy person. They always were and there are always signs. We can just be blinded by our desires.
People can absolutely become controlling crazy people. Who are you kidding?
Good point every human has a vulnerability to the halo effect!0
I agree with Megyn
After having Dole, Bush II, McCain and Romney as the Republican presidential nominees, most republicans were tired of milquetoast Neo-Cons and ripe for someone outside the box that might actually stand firm on issues - hence Trump. Not that I always agreed with him, but he seemed willing to fight the Left for once.
May God judge between us!!
Very insightful commentary.
Leverage fear, then many on the Left will think twice.Mrs Kelly understands.Understanding and dialogue is unfortunately too little too late for a softly softly approach.
Good show
So professional while still so stylish, Megyn!
Megyn just gets better and better
What did I tell y'all ???? pause this segment at 53:09 and look at that look ( damn right , fighting back works ) ...
I don’t know why? But every time I subscribe to your page when I come back I have to subscribe again 🤷♀️
A $43,000 profit sent to my portfolio each week, Ms. Angela cole car is amazing.
Wow! How’s that possible please I’ll appreciate your assistance on how to go about it.
I’ve heard a lot about trading and investing with Mrs Angela Cole Carr and how good she is.
Same here, I started with $3,000 now earning $28,300 bi-weekly profits with her trading program.
I have also been trading with her, The profits are secured and over a 100% return on investment directly sent to your wallet.
Same here I earn $13,000 a week. GOD bless Angela Cole Carr, she has been a blessing to my family.
finally a common sense approach to life. Fun thing is, I don't agree totally with him but at the same time I feel what he says has true value. This is the kind of dialogue that will lift not destroy. I do believe that the cancel culture people need to be dealt with just as a bully on the playground needs to be dealt with because they are nothing more than bullies
