    Damn, that crane clip is perhaps the best clip I've ever seen: respect from a large vehicle, good forward planning, tricky handling, respect from a smaller vehicle, selfless assistance and excellent forward planning on their part, great flow. Genuine roadcraft on both of them

    I've done the hold back from the junction for a lorry or bus quite a few times, and it's always appreciated. But that van holding back the traffic onto the hill for the crane coming down took things to a whole new level. Thanks for showing this one.

  • @trueriver1950
    @trueriver1950 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    6:45 notice that for a long lorry, a good rule of thumb is to leave about two lorry lengths, not just one. On some tight turns the trucker needs one length to make the turn and up to a second length to get back on their side of the road.
    And it's worth doing for the friendly thanks you usually get when the driver passes you, as well as to get everyone moving again.

    • @ArminGrewe
      @ArminGrewe ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I've got a niggling suspicion the van driver knew exactly what he was doing as that probably was his day job. I might be wrong as the footage is a bit blurry, but I think it says something like "escort vehicle" at the bottom of the van. Doesn't diminish what he did as he wasn't on duty, just that he had the experience to help him think of it.

    • @smilerbob
      @smilerbob ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When I had amber lights on my vehicle (just a normal road user but was doing many, many miles) I would give unofficial escorts to some vehicles.
      My local motorway at the time had an entry slip road up a steep hill and lorries joining would only be able to reach ~25mph until it levelled off 3/4 mile further up. I would be behind them with my amber lights and the difference was immense in how early others would move to lane 2 comapred to not giving the escort
      Top marks to the van driver for doing this, whether it is his day job or not 👍

  • @ibs5080
    @ibs5080 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    At around 2:47, very nicely handled by the viewer in letting the yellow van correct it's initial wrong lane. I'm sure we've all seen so many very similar instances on other dash cam channels where the cammer goes out of their way to purposely create a near miss, along with horn blowing and colourful language. In fact, I'm so used to seeing that on other channels, it almost seemed "strange" to not witness it here!

    5:35 something I realised about Ambos while giving way to one the other night in Winterbourne. I pulled slightly (carefully and slowly making observations) across the give way line of a bellmouth t-junction on my left. Technically the ambo could have just overtaken me on my right normally as the road was quiet but I thought I'd give them a more positive space.
    Then I realised - ambulances specifically will make MUCH better speed in a straight line because there is often a Paramedic and a patient, but certainly at least heavy equipment, in the back, over the centre of gravity. So if you can and it is safe to do so it is good to give them a straighter path through.

    The crane clip is the perfect embodiment of how accommodating other road users goes a long way. Imagine if Phil wasn't thoughtful enough to pull in there. One of the first things I remember from watching your videos was an analysis you did on an accident where you said “Most accidents occur when two road users arrive at the same place at the same time. If you can avoid that then you will avoid the conflict” and that has always stuck with me, regardless of priority (well, except one morning last month and I am still shaking my head at myself with that one)
    Thank you for using my clip with the cyclist arriving at the same time as me turning left. It is worrying that some comments on here elude to not slowing down. At around 5:00 re pulling into a space on your side of the road for an oncoming vehicle. Of course, generally the wisest thing to do. However I've had instances where the oncoming vehicle was an HGV and there was only a short space on the right hand side of a UK road. In such instances the best, indeed only option might be for a car driver to pull into the short space on the other side of the road. Of course, this needs to be done carefully and for the HGV driver to be given sufficient time to see and understand what you are doing. Signalling your manouvre will obviously help. And care needs to be taken pulling back out of the space afterwards.

    Excellent video, thanks for this one. This is such a key part of driving. As I had a lot of road experience at the start of my car lessons due to spending 3 years on a moped, most of my lessons were spent on how to meet traffic in a car. All of these clips came up in my lessons and I'm still picking up new things to deal with these moments better. Great illustrations of daily driving situations.

    I think not arriving at the same point at the same time, and providing good flow for all the traffic around you, can be used by anyone, anywhere, at any time. One pet peeve of mine is people walking (or standing) in groups on sidewalks, shopping centers etc. in such a manner that you either can't get past them, or you have to use the road.

      I’ve no idea why she doesn’t stand back on the pavement - I’m sure she’s being picked up by someone, but I can’t imagine that that person wouldn’t be able to slow even if she wasn’t almost in the road.

      I remember worse during Covid, where social distancing was expected or even required: I was approaching a group of people (think it was a large family) on a towpath. I was expecting them to move to one edge, so that I could pass on the other edge, leaving as much distance between us as possible. But what happened? They split up, one half on one side, the other on the other side, expecting me to "squeeze" through the middle. I just stopped and politely informed them that's not going to work, they sheepishly laughed and to their credit sorted it.

    4:49 That spot (in the Netherlands I guess) looks just like the one in a police chase video. The suspect vehicle rounded the corner and crashed. This police vehicle had no room to stop, went through the thick smoke and was then able to stop to chase them on foot. They had no backup and the 2 suspects in the vehicle split up. One of the officers chased a suspect running in a field, got the suspect to stop and had the suspect cuff himself at gunpoint. The officer literally said (in Dutch) "Here, I don't know how, but put these on"

      @smilerbob ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe the cyclist wasn’t planning on entering between the car and kerb but instead enter behind the vehicle but hadn’t seen the indicator. Once on the road (this isn’t a roundabout BTW) the cyclist has priority over a vehicle turning left
      Either way why risk a collision, especially with a vulnerable road user, just because they didn’t have priority?

    • @user10184
      @user10184 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a misunderstanding of the law in relation to priority. You need to emerge without causing the vehicle with priority to change course or speed. Then, and only then, are you 'established' and can be in a position to have priority. It was not possible for the cyclist to emerge at that point with causing the driver to slow. Of course you must take action to avoid a collision but that isn't the point Ashley was making. @@smilerbob

    • @smilerbob
      @smilerbob ปีที่แล้ว

      @user10184 Thank you for taking the time to confirm the correct action was taken. Given the cyclist could’ve easily kept momentum and pulled out behind, thus not causing any deviation of speed or direction of other vehicle and, as you put it, be established and have priority over the vehicle that was already slowing ready to make a left turn 👍
      Both road users were potentially going to be in conflict at some point during that situation regardless which is the point being made

    • @user10184
      @user10184 ปีที่แล้ว

And in my case, I somehow felt the driver of the slow farm vehicle pulled over to let me past because I was patient and kept a very respectful distance behind. I remember thinking at the time, had I been impatiently tailgating, they might have been inclined to think "Nah, I'm going to make the impatient so and so wait". That first clip at around 0:40 with the car initially deciding to take the motorway slip road but then deciding to come back on the main carriageway. This is exactly why in many instances where I'm continuing past an Off slip road by staying on the main carriageway, often I will stay out in Lane 2 if there are exiting vehicles on the slip road. For the very reason shown in this video, namely they change their mind. Other drivers might interpret my actions as lane hogging (aka "why aren't you in lane 1?") but honestly, I believe in these scenarios, it's often safer to stay in Lane 2 until clear. Of course, there's also the upcoming consideration of whether there's a corresponding On slip with vehicles merging onto the motorway, sometimes not visible till quite late.

    • @davidjones332

      Agreed; at busy periods it's a pound to a penny that something will come down the slip road on the far side of the junction and need to merge into the nearside lane from the blind spot over your left shoulder, so it makes sense to stay put until you know it's safe to move back.

    Clip 2 What road planners put pinch points so close to the junction I wonder when it's a bus route etc, this means here it would delay right turners from getting off the main road causing traffic delays.

    To answer you question about drivers not wanti g to yield their right of way and turning events into non-events is that I don't think everyone was either taught to read the road very well or just ignored those lessons once they passed the test. For years there has been an attitude that you don't really learn to drive until after you pass the test. Which is true upto a point. That point is you won't have driven in all possible circumstances. But the counter argument is if you learn the basics of reading the road from day 1 behind the wheel then whatever conditions you face then you will act more appropriately then those who haven't learnt those lessons.

    Some impressive stuff in that video, apart from the early scene where that car overtook.
    That car pulling out w/out looking….for novice drivers, in my experience that happens a lot more often than it should - so check check check for that. This is what we mean when we say, Driving for them.

    There's a tight spot island in my village that arctics have to get round, I always try to stop and give them room but the amount of people that can't see past their bonnet and overtake me then suddenly have to stop because a 40 footer is halfway through a maneuver is shocking at times.

    4:37 clip was literally a non-event.
    The two vehicles were on different roadways that did not intersect.
    Each lane is a different roadway.
    Cammer was required to keep to the left lane and car on right was required to stay in the right lane.
    Some, in the cammer’s position might not realise this and overreact.

  • @radishpea6615
    @radishpea6615 ปีที่แล้ว

    1:03 as the bus was entering the road the cammer was exiting and turning left from, I don't think the cammer needed to stop. The bus would have been slow to turn and the cammer could have moved away without causing the bus a problem. 1:50, again, I don't think the cammer needed to stop.

  • @kenbrown2808

    I often drive things that are longer than the lane is wide, and if I'm turning onto a two lane road, I will make sure both lanes are clear enough before I emerge. I consider causing someone to flinch to be just as poor driving as forcing someone to brake or swerve. unless it's my wife when I'm turning into our driveway, because the alternative would be to take off the driver's side mirror on the gate post.

    Hi, how is it with the cyclist in the 1:22 clip? I don't get why the cyclist would have priority over the driver.

    • @smilerbob
      @smilerbob ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cyclist would have priority once they emerge onto the road as a cyclist has priority over a vehicle turning left into a junction. The speed they were approaching it was possible they were going to emerge and not see the left signal and assume it was clear to proceed

    • @gregc9344
      @gregc9344 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he means because if there's a cyclist coming up the left side of you on a road when you want to turn left you have to wait for them to pass

    • @user10184
      @user10184 ปีที่แล้ว

      The argument is that he could establish himself on the roundabout before the driver needs to turn left by emerging between the car and the kerb. This isn't giving way. It's similar to someone turning left onto a major road and claiming that side of the road when a driver on the main road needs it to pass an obstruction.

    • @user10184
      @user10184 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @lozyoung4110
      @lozyoung4110 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the cyclist has a Give Way line, and they can't cross it without causing the driver to take avoiding action... I understand that its good for the driver to be cautious, but the cyclist would only "get priority" by doing something dumb.

    (0:30>) The black car was lucky in that the Evergreen truck driver saw him moving into the straight ahead lane. Relying on the truck driver's mirrors covering the space you are in is risky. If I was in the black car I would have hung back and moved into the RH lane after the truck had moved through.
    (2{00>) With that many sheep in the road on a standard rural area then the likelihood is that they have wandered out of a field. Don't just drive through the flock look for the local farm (RH entrance?) and inform the farmer. He will be grateful that his sheep are not lost and that no accident has occurred, a sheep is remarkably stupid and can cause a lot of damage if hit.
