My Chaste/Vitex tree just died this Spring. Similar to yours we have two small branched split, but since only small branches split, splitting itself must not be what killed the tree. The sudden cold/prolonged cold is certainly what killed it, but the splitting must only be a symptom. My tree was sold for cold hardiness 6 (Ohio - Columbus city), but if cold coming soon after the tree comes out of dormancy kills these trees, clearly zone 6 is questionable. My tree was 2 years old after a 5 gallon purchase, about 8 feet tall and with a main trunk about 2 inches in diameter. If the tree can possibly be saved, I have no interest in worrying about the same problem every spring.
Dang, I am so sorry! They are such beautiful plants, and it hurts to lose them! I am very worried about my 2 year old tree. I found 1 branch has split, and it hasn't started coming out of dormancy yet. I think if this one dies, I might try the Blue Diddley. It's supposed to die to the ground every year and come back from the roots like a perennial. That may help it survive the colder winters.
Thank you for the video... shame it died. I have two budding plants from seeds and I’m excited! Only thing is that you mentioned Roundup with an explanation ... if you know it’s horrible why use it. If there is no better option, create one. Your amazing I’m sure you can!
I thought mine were dead too, but they started coming up from the ground about mid May. Zone 5 here. Definitely try again, because they are spectacular!
I am so glad your came back. I agree, they are truely spectacular. I did get a new one that is just about ready to bloom! More people need to grow Chaste Trees.
That is a reasonable expectation. Unfortunately, I have been pruning mine to be a tree that form a canopy over a garden area next to a patio. So I'll need to find something else.
I had to dig up some Coppertop Viburnum that didn't survive the very hard 3-4 day uncharacteristic zero temps last Christmas. I'm in USDA zone 7b-8a. I was very upset! My husband used his truck to pull up one of them, and i was standing about 20 feet away and I laughed so loud and clapped my hands when it finally came out of the ground. These bushes grew enormous in just 3 years and then one really hard winter and they die?! I was so mad! I got a thrill out of seeing it come out of the ground. LOL 😂 I thought i may have heard you laugh when your Vitex finally came up. I thought I'd share my story with you! So sorry about your chaste tree though. I just bought two... Hoping they survive our unpredictable weather, and yours too!!! ❤
Is it in full sun? It won't flower in the shade. Also, look at how often it's getting watered. It does need a little more water than some other drought tolerant plants.
Thanks for bringing this up. I have not heard of them being invasive in Utah. It's too dry and cold here. I just looked it up and it sounds like Texas is a good environment for Chaste trees and they are becoming invasive there. That is worrisome! Where are you located?
Thank you for sharing my sadness. I did plant it knowing it was a zone 6 and had the potential to die in adverse weather. I was just hoping it would miraculously survive.
That is great! They are gorgeous trees and it's so sad to lose them! I do think they are pretty hardy. I think the reason mi e died was a combination of a deep freeze just as the sap started running and possibly some wind while that was happening. It was enough to split each of the trunks on my tree. Remove any one of those elements, and I think it would have still survived.

Round up is terrible for the environment

I love that you laughed when it came out 😄. Thanks for sharing your story! I hope your Chaste Trees do well!
@@gardenwiseadventures thank you! ❤️
Vinegar, soap detergent & salt works better than poison round up. Or to kill grass lay some card board over it & cover w/ mulch
and It wasn’t a lot of grass, cardboard would have done the trick. I hate when people use poison. :(
Great info
My chaste tree is not flowering any tips please?

I'm sorry you lost your tree. I just planted 2 of them. But just found out that they are invasive? Is that true?

Mine didn't die when we had heavy freeze
