Tired of fumbling around trying to find your winch controller in the back of your Jeep? Need to use your winch quickly and don't want to get out of you jeep? However you use it an in cab winch control comes in super handy! Being able to control control your winch without ever leaving your vehicle saves time, it allows you to be in control and focus on driving instead of winching, and its just plain cool! In this video Matt and I will show you how to wire an in cab winch control switch for a winch and controller that uses 5 pins. These 5 pin winch controllers have been out for about 10 years or so and is a safety feature over the older 3 pin style. But the 5 pin is a little trickier to wrap your brain around. Let's make it simple for you! Wire: amzn.to/2YOmBpo Aircraft Safety Switch: amzn.to/2Ajqrg0 Inline Fuse: amzn.to/2Lg4v7P 6-PIN Switch: amzn.to/3blZMvN Bolt Light: amzn.to/2Z04rRo WD-40 Locator: www.wd40.com/products/ Here’s a link to WD-40 Specialist Long-Term Corrosion Inhibitor at The Home Depot: www.homedepot.com/p/WD-40-SPE... : The Home Depot is currently offering free delivery of more than one million online items with limited next-day and two-day delivery services. I would take those wires out and un twist them. They create electromagnetic interference being twisted. I learned that when i bought a car with speaker wires twisted that way. I bought new speakers and it still sounded terrible. I bought a new head unit and that's when i found twisted wires. I un twisted and sound quality was fixed.
You can simplify the wiring by using an on/off switch with an embedded LED. Eliminates one hole and one wire. Not a big deal, but I think it makes for a cleaner install on both 3 & 5 wire winch setups. Aside from that, I followed your method last night and got it working and it looks great. Thanks for the tips!
I did this same thing about 5-6 yrs ago for my Cherokee. I also wired in a switch for TC lockup and 1st gear hold. I used to love doing this kinda stuff, but my body is getting older and I can't do it as easily as I used to.
Thanks Matt for the information how to hook up a 5-pin Warn winch in Cab I will have to pick up the switches and wiring and hook one up in my XJ for my 8,000 Warn winch ..
Thankyou for putting this video together, been wondering how this was done and totally get it now, luckily I have the same winch you got there next to do on the endless list. So for your next video could you show us how to wire a Jeep JK Rubicon how to run my lockers turned on in 4 wheel high in the transfer case. I need more tire speed for 38's in the snow and mud!!
Nice work. Having an in cab control makes sense. It would be nice if you could wire up a relay to detect when the hand control is in use to interrupt the in and out signals from the in cab control. This would prevent conflict between the two controls.
ajm8127 I think this would over complicate the circuit for little gain as you wouldn’t normally be trying to operate the winch with both sets of controls at the same time.
That's a great video, really clear, but also entertaining. I'll be checking out more of your videos. One question, wha5 does the additional bunch of wires do for the waterproofing of the winch?
I used an extra winch controller I already had, all I had to do is take the handle apart, and hook it to a rocker switch, added a bypass switch to send power to the rocker. That way you dont have to lose just plugging the winch controller in.
houston we have a "winch" problem, my best story is fishing trip remote area of Canadian Rockies, going down a cut line ( bulldozer freeway ), stuck in little gully - winch cable pinched my remote wire, no tape literally used first aid kit bandages to avoid shorting out , btw luv my warn m8000 on yj!
I have always thought that in situations where a lot of movement is possible (as in a Jeep), crimp connectors are less likely to break than soldered connections. Am I wrong?
There's actually an easier way to do this on a 5 wire that I found when I did mine and it only requires running 3 wires from the winch through the firewall. There's no reason to run ground and +12 through the firewall from the winch because you already have access to those inside the jeep. Set up your enable switch to control the solenoid ground and then your winch switch terminals to +12 to the 2 solenoid wires. Really simplifies the switches wiring as they are not tied to each other in any way.
why isnt the relay permanently grounded? whats the advantage of warns system and can you just permanently ground it? i did my smitty bilt into the cab couple months ago and just ran a in wire and an out wire from the winch into the cab, grabbed power in cab and sent it out either one of those wires on a momentary DPDT switch
I wouldve just cut the handle controls square off and run that cable straight in the jeep to my inner controls and obviously the the other end would just plug into the winch where its supposed to . But Im guessing you still want to maintain the option to control the winch from outside of the jeep?
Another video that solidifies my theory that there's some unwritten rule that says you can't make a Jeep offroad related video without using "Howling at the Moon" playing in the background. Within the timespan of a week...MischiefMakerTV, LiteBrite, Flex, Rocks & Rollovers & now Bleepin Jeep, all used "Howling at the Moon" in their content. I think it's a Jeep TH-cam Illuminati thing.
I winched off a shrub once. I was buried in clay up to the axles and the Jeep wouldn't move in any direction. The shrub was the only thing sticking up out of ground within reach of the winch cable.
Awesome video but I just throw my wire up over the hood and straight through into the cab since I don't run a windshield anyway. I just leave mine plugged in not for me of course but for everyone else LOL
About a month ago went wheeling with my daughter. Came across a dead tree across the trail. Was able to get around it fine. On the way out i snapped the front drive line. My stupid self didn't bring tools so i couldn't remove it. It only bound up under load so i was stuck winching out about a mile. This is also when i learned i need to swap out the 249 for a 242! No 2wd option and a blown vicious coupler... anyways i got to the down tree and learned that there's no trees to winch around it. So over the top i went. Learned the weak points on my home made bumper as i bent it down at the brackets. But i got out and managed to pull the tree out of the road in the process... also managed to run out of gas 500 feet from the road so that was done with battery power only. And the battery died completely right at the road so i literally made it by the skin of my teeth! Bumper brackets are reengineered and the drive shaft replaced so all's well that ends well!
Winching out my tj from a residential canal 7/4,after consuming rum n coke pinching the cable n not being able to unwind the cable to do my next pull 😳before the popo came to ask why what n how 😣😞
@@bleepinjeep I did notice that yours is the newer style winch with the solid state albric solenoid . I upgraded mine to the that from the old starter relays.
I got stuck in a monster truck hole thinking I could make it I had to wich a almost 300 feet took down three trees double wing and a side be side pulling lid up to my mid window shield took three hours finally got it out washed it off in the river keeper on wheeling will never forget that one
Could get EMI when twisting wire pairs that aren’t designated to be twisted. Maybe something to consider if any issues should arise. Love the videos. 🤘🏼
good luck with that! I cant tell you how many times I've had to deal with someones bluetooth winch... the sound I hear is always "Hold on a minute, I cant get the bluetooth to connect"

I’ve decided to hard wire it like this because my first week living on utah someone stole my remote

I love these more detailed technical projects, you should do a york conpressor video!
For those of us that are "electrically challenged" this video is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
You guys make me wantvto build a crawler but as my dad would say "with what? Your good look" yea need to win the lottery!
Hey Matt, that was really clever to get an engineer to wire your in cab winch controls. It looked like you and Matt had fun making this video...
I feel so dumb now 🤓

i cant stay up for the premier. I live in Germany. I'll watch tomorrow as this is the next mod on my list!

Matt, did you make the in cab switch throw direction match the remote switch, up in, down out etc... or vicey versa !
In cab, up is out... we both decided that made more sense logically.
Love the vids Matt.

Hey Bleepin Jeepin splicing the wires from the control wouldn't work?
I have always thought that in situations where a lot of movement is possible (as in a Jeep), crimp connectors are less likely to break than soldered connections. Am I wrong?
what are the advantages or reasoning behind this new system and the relay not being permanently grounded?
mentioned near the end of the video, its safety
I would like a video on a luanchable harpoon winch, of course in cab operated
I lost the original remote for landcruiser winsh and I get wireless remote. so how I can refix and wire connected?
Jump which holes to work without controller?
What gauge wire do winches need?

@@AndrewBrowner Safety, If the power gets stuck and the winch wont turn off and your're reeling in you can kill it by ground disconnect.
I attempted this once.. Thankfully we have a good wiring shop nearby, he's bailed me out more than a few times.

Yes. You'll need both options. You can buy 4 or 5 wire in one sheath at home depot or online.

that is correct!
I winched off a shrub once. I was buried in clay up to the axles and the Jeep wouldn't move in any direction. The shrub was the only thing sticking up out of ground within reach of the winch cable.

I added wire looms after we finished up, just didnt feel it was a necessary part of the video
Not to rain on your parade "love your channel by the way " but i this years ago with a in cab in/out switch in my jeep and just needed 3 wires .

Why didn't you just cut up the Warn cord?
its important that you can still use the original way as well, many times you might need to winch from outside the jeep too.
My cable was stolen -
Add a secondary in/out toggle near the winch so you don’t need the “ambilical cord” when your respooling after winching 😉
Thats a good idear 🥴
This is a good idea,BUT it would have been a lot better and easier to follow if you had the correct colored wires.
Why everyone gotta add more pins and wires and electronics into everything and make it more difficult?
It used to be so easy 😕
Five sided triangle
