I live just down the road in Stoke Poges. Yeah, and the old roundabout pictured gone as well. They built big offices &a new bus station on that old Bus station site. Tesco Superstore was a rebuild of the old Tesco, which was originally school grounds I believe. As you will be aware, the new bus station was burnt down a couple of years ago by a 15 year old girl. That's Slough for ya :-)

To really get this you have to remember that the premise is a tv company have decided to make a fly on the wall documentary at this office and David Brent is behaving like it’s an audition every time the camera is pointed at him. He wants to be a star… he wants to be loved… not just by his staff but by the nation watching the show when it goes out. That’s why he’s constantly trying to say the right thing and, in doing so, he’s overstretching and ending up saying the wrong thing. It’s so cringy to watch him make a total twat of himself but you can’t help but laugh 😂

The UK and US versions become two completely different shows when the US goes it own way, the UK is more ‘real’ as it’s set like a mockumentary as though it’s a real fly-on-the-wall with character that are so true to real life (which makes it funnier imo) the US becomes a typical US cartoon like sitcom with shouting and over the top US comedy

Back when this was airing, I remember the general comment I'd hear was: "The Office is the last thing I can imagine an American remake of" although weirdly i'ts been remade by about 30 different countries (so Ricky and Steve must have made a pretty penny). Took me a while to get into it personally -- I thought it was 'alan partridge lite' on initial observation and dismissed it. I was a fan by the time it ended though in 2003.

The fly-on-the-wall, day in the life of a typical workplace docusoap was big at the time, with shows like Airport and Driving School producing breakout "characters" who then had their 15 minutes of fame.
The Office is presented as just another one of these docusoaps right up until the end credits, from the opening titles and theme to the casting of then-unknowns, with Brent as the guy who thinks he's going to be the next breakout Reality TV star.
I don't know if the US show had the same context but it went in a slightly different direction, keeping the documentary conceit despite there being no chance of mistaking it for anything other than a sitcom.

Great laugh thank you guys. With the older style of telephone, my first number when I left home, was the outback town name and the number 79D. Even predating a basic rotary dial, with a 'coffee grinder' looking thing in the middle, that you could use a single long grind (ring) for the operator. Or you could use the Morse code letter for that line with little long and short rings for your local call... Either way it didnt really matter what number you called. Once dialled, you could hear many discrete clicks as EVERYONE listened in for all the local gossip and news. Mid 1980's, so not totally yonks ago. And although only audio, was said to be the finest daily 'soap-opera' ever! Also with the added bonus of no need for an answering machine.

Episode 1 of the U.S. Office is joke-for-joke exactly the same as Episode 1 of the U.K. Office. Watch them both and see who delivers the lines better... (hint - it's the U.K. version)

comedy is very subjective,,, and you cant like everything as some comedy is very lame to one person and the greatest thing ever to another,,,, coming from across the pond where comedy can be different your now old enough and wise enough to get and understand just how good some of the uk comedy is,,, and the journey is not over yet which is great
and if you have ever worked in an office this show strikes so many chords,,, and as a show its genuinely up there with the best ever

This show was very popular in Australia too when it came out. You guys missed the joke when David Brent was talking to the staff about him treating them as though they were his little children and if anyone was going to interfere with the children, it was going to be him, not head office. Also remember that Gareth is a phychopath - his true character builds up a lot over the episodes.

Both versions are good but I prefer the realistic tone of the UK version.

I agree, you guys have definitely developed a keen British sense of humour over the years. You get all the subtleties now. You're almost Brits!
