Good summary and tips to help people get on the water. Agree on the JayLows, the best of all the ones we looked at for bars between roof rails where it isn't easy to lay two kayaks side by side. On wider bars I just use simple foam cradle ones as they are cheap and mould to any bottom contour. We did around 10,000km with two heavy roto-moulded sea kayaks on our JayLows. They never missed a beat and always felt secure, with of course bow and stern lines. The bow line in particular is important as mentioned to counter the updraft from the air pushing up from the bonnet and windscreen, especially when the likes of oncoming trucks pass and particularly on roof racks which hook into the door frames. I've heard multiple stories of kayaks along with their racks disappearing over the back, not even worth contemplating. Another option people with high vehicle's here are finding good is the Thule Hullavator. And the Yakima straps are the best ones I have come across. Long to give plenty of options, stronger than the rest, and with gutsy cam buckles (I've seen lighter weight Thule ones for example break), and best rubber protective covers which means you can toss them over the kayak and not worry about your paint. In my experience it is good to tie off the loose end of the strap at the outlet of the cam buckle as over time the webbing and cam polish and the webbing can slip through. The extra slack I tie back and forward to the other strap and use it to add a bit more tension as well as absorb the slack. In fine weather for short trips the slack and be slammed in the door frame but during rain water will wick down the webbing into the car. Myself I prefer a rope for the bow line, starting at one side of the bonnet loop and looping around each bow under the decklines or through the saddle and with a double half hitch for friction to keep it all in place, and then a truckers hitch for tensioning at the other end. As things settle and loosen up hooks can slip free and then you have a steel hook flying around on the end of the webbing. And you can make your own bow loops for nicks from a loop of some good quality webbing and bolt down through a hole made with a small soldering iron or awl / nail / what have you using the bolts which attach the fender to the body just under the edge of the bonnet. When not in use they can just be folded away under the bonnet.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for having the young woman load the kayak! Our state is still in lock-down and it's tough to find a recreational kayak to purchase.(A good thing that people are outside!) I did worry a bit about getting it home once I got one. Have been watching your videos (so helpful!), so when we open back up, I will be much better informed for when I shop for the kayak. And I now feel confident that I will get it home safely.!
This has been such a great video. We just got some secondhand kayaks, and over the past few days my husband & I have basically rehearsed this setup so we're proficient (and saving ourselves from any frustrations!!) loading up for adventures. You guys did such a great job, thank you for sharing!!
Wow!!! Nice! What a helpful video! VERY well done and answered every question I had. You guys are great. Also nice to see Abba (a woman...who knew they could be so helpful 🙂) being so helpful and knowledgeable!
I had the Malone drawings years ago and would run the strap through the holes and under the crossbar for extra security to reduce stress on the drawing bolts. Currently I have the Yakima SweetRoll (waaayyy over priced now in 2023). I was able to integrate a Malone stingray load assist into the rear sweetroll saddle. Works great. The stingray is a great design.
BATH MAT!!! Thank you for mentioning that. I load my 17.5 ft Perception Sea lion and its Wilderness Systems Cape Horn (15') onto a mini van from the rear by lifting one end of the 50 pound boat then sliding it up rather like your last boat here (I have round racks and pool noodles)... The stern often slides, especially on pavement or gravel... WHOOT!!! BATH MAT ...adding to gear
I finally am able to purchase Kayak after few month searching it everywhere with no luck.. It's mid. September now and delivery will be in the middle of winter LOL😂 I just saved this video and I will be back here when I am ready to purchase one of the rack from this video. I like that lady is showing she can do it by herself. That means I can do it too!
Fold down J Racks if you have a "GARAGE". Put trash can or large object in your garage bay before leaving it's a good reminder not to drive into the garage with kayaks on the roof.
That is a good idea. I hang a very small safety orange flag from my rear view mirror to remind me that I am using the roof rack (or bike rack on the back). Other places that might be too short also: some independent drive-through windows, parking garages to name a few. I make a lot of mistakes but that one i have not made but a coworker did and it was not pretty. As i recall it was while driving a fairly new car. He was just sick, damage to car, house and of course whatever he was carrying. Money out of pocket for insurance deductibles was particularly painful. Never a good time for that to happen but the stars seemed to be aligned "just wrong". If there are other "reminders" from others love to read about them...
I'm installing a "stop sign" that flops down in front of the driver as the garage door opens. I like the trash can idea, but I'd probably forget that just as easily as forgetting the kayak racks anyway.
I love the look of the 1st option but the 2nd option is probably my best bet since I'm only 5'3" and have a lifted hummer. Oh yeah and I love the step stool idea!
Hood loops are the best! I used to have eyebolts mounted in my bumper, but the "new" van is all plastic so nope... then I found these beauties. Pretty sure they'd work on the hatch too
I'm so excited. Getting a fishing kayak soon so I am trying to learn as much as I can before I get it. I always said once I get a truck, I'd buy a kayak but no longer waiting for a truck!
Today I learned what hood loops are, and for this you guys got a like :P I just got some bars for my prius c and I have no clue how to do any of this, thank you for the in depth video!
I've been seakayaking and transporting my boats on the vehicle top since '99. With this kayak and sideways J cradle configuration, the bow and stern lines are unnecessary. Just extra fussing at the end of the day. I take the 6' or so extra tiedown strap and chuck it in the boat cockpit. Then I put on my neoprene cockpit cover. Keeps out bugs (spiders!) and jokers that toss in trash at the gas station or rest stop. Alternatively, just run it in the car door opening and shut the door over it. They wind won't pull them out and water never seems to leak inside. Again, less fussing. I always make sure I run the front strap right under the lip of the cockpit coaming. I also loop it thru the loop on the cockpit cover. A little detail that adds security to sudden vehicle stops or impacts. And that little step ladder? Always carry the very same one, lol! Especially for the taller SUV.
Wow! Not only have I been deciding on kayaks, I have been figuring out how to carry them. Trailer, car top, just use the St. Lawrence Seaway? I really like this demo. I knew that Yakima and Malone would have something that would work with our Honda CRV. Thanks for this VERY HELPFUL demo!
Great vid but the only comment I would make is the bow line is not for a little added sequrity it is the most important tie down that you will ever make one big reason is insurance if you dont have a bow line you might not be covered by your car insurance WORTH CHECKING ?????
Great info here!! We have been putting our kayaks in the van but it's time for roof carriers and I think my wife to do what you guys did so it's time..
I’m currently car topping an ascend H12 hybrid fishing kayak and a sundolphin SS Journey 12.... both relatively heavy boats especially to car top. My Malone Multi Rack has been amazing so far for both boats. If I’m carrying just my ascend, then I lay the racks flat and pretty much carry it like a canoe. If I have both I flip up the center cradle and have them both in the cradle. Definitely a two person load with cradles up and on my Subaru Outback it can be a little bit challenging. It works fine on the factory cross bars however definitely would work better with aftermarket cross bars. Overall I love the Malone multi rack though. Especially for the price point
would the malone racks accommodate a perception 11.0 hi life (paddleyak)? The malone rack says it will accomodate up to a 32 inch wide kayak, and the perception is 34 inches, but i'm wondering if I could make it work? If not, do you have another recommendation for transporting the 11.0 hi life? Thanks in advance.
So I've been looking into kayaks I think I'm going to get a pelican mustang 100x. One issue is I live in an area where there's a lot of theft and I'm worried about leaving the kayak on the roof of my car in case someone steals it. Are there systems you can get that will lock it on? I see the lock you point out but looks like that's just for the mount itself. Some people on reddit suggested using bike locks looped through the mount and a place on the boat but it doesn't look like the mustang has anything like that. Thanks for the video!
Aww dang it! Wish I would have seen this yesterday lol well... still useful information though 👍😊 I'm expecting delivery of the lifetime tamarack which I'm sure I can lift as I've done so with my dogs huge 50+lb bags but its still a lil heavy... i got J racks today :/ I'm getting another kayak (recreational; not purchased yet) and wanted to make the best of my space on top of my 2014 jeep cherokee latitude. I guess its not too bad. Will see how it goes when I go pick it up lol 😅
Dan, what's the proper angle for the kayak on the roof? Leaned inward or straight up on its side? I have Swiss Cargo kayak racks for one or two yaks. I'm never sure of the proper angle.
sweet set-ups; J-rack and Malone...I used to use Quick N Easy with 2x4's...am looking for a change cuz my ole 1986 Volvo 245 is toast and my car has no rain gutters but does have a factory rack. do you ship these to AZ? thx heap!!!
I have a Mazda CX-9 suv and am wondering if I can fit 2 Malone Sea Wings & kayaks on my factory roof bars? I am getting a Pungo 105 kayak that is 30” wide. I am undecided on the other kayak yet, but imagine it will be something similar. Do you think that is possible, or will I have to do a setup similar to yours in this video?
so if you find good deal on a kayak a few days before your rack arrives, can you just strap it to the cross bars that the rack would mount to and go 50 miles without much concern? my last 'friend' was 4-10... tried to get this brand of rack, but they went up and/or were out of stock at places I went to..
By the end of this week I'll have two kayaks (a Wilderness Systems Ride 115 and a Tarpon 130T), and I'll need to carry on top of a Pathfinder. I have a Malone j hook that I plan to you use. My upper body isn't as strong as it used to be and I find loading from rear easier (last time I side loaded and broke a mirror off). Can I mount the J frame facing inwards so I can load from rear, then load the 2nd yak flat from the rear?
Love the idea of the seawing for Eddyline but for rotomolded kayaks I was told it should be hauled hull up so that it doesn’t oilcan. Any truth to this? Love your channel, I’ve learned a ton of stuff. Keep up the great vids!
Thanks for making great reviews and how too’s. Wish you were local. I’m actually looking for an appropriate roof rack for a fishing kayak. I’ve seen some people use different load assist devices. What’s your opinion?
Fancy setup. I used to carry two 15 foot canoes on a Grand Caravan factory rack, lashing them in to 2X4s. Now that I’m older I put canoes and kayaks on a Malone trailer - no overhead lifting. Big plus is that I can back the trailer into the garage, retract the tongue, loosen the straps and I’m set for the next time.
@@HeadwatersKayak I was looking for this question, but that answer won't do! I just bought a 2015 Wilderness Systems Tsunami 125 (my first kayak!), and I swear to you there is no place to attach any sort of a line at neither stern nor bow, except the carry handles, and that seems to me about as sketchy as using a vegetation handhold when scrambling up a mountain. My dad advised me to drill holes fore and aft and put in eye bolts. I'm not listening to me dad.
Do you think the Big Fish 120 is going to be fit on top of the RAV4? I’m planning to buy a big fish 120 but thinking it’s maybe too long for my RAV4. Any suggestions?
We have a Rav 4 and Jeep Patriot. I actually want to get both of these racks, but not sure it'll fit a canoe + kayak. The kayak is a simple 10' that will go on the Yakima Jaylow. The canoe is an Old Town Discovery 119 Solo Sportsman which would go on the Malone. Do you think it would work? Is the canoe too wide at 32.5 inches to fit both of these on the roof? Thank you!!
I noticed that with the J-Rack you wrapped around the crossbar and with the Seawing you did not. Is there a reason not to in the middle of going through the seawing slots?
I have factory cross bars on a Toyota Prius Prime. I just bought the Yakima BowDown Rack and am having trouble securely fitting it. Should I swap my BowDown for a JayHook? Or do I need an adapter? Would some guidance from anyone who knows this stuff. Thanks, all!
I have a rav4 and unfortunately this approach wont work for heavier kayaks like hobies. The rear spoiler wont handle the weight so i load it from the side.
I love to kayak but don't have a SUV I have a 4 series BMW Sedan what would you recommend. I am female and worried how to get it up on top of my car without scratching and what racks equipment I should purchase?
BMW dealer can get you one that works for your 4 Series. Also Thule makes one and also Carid carries them at this link ... www.carid.com/bmw-4-series-roof-racks/
As long as it's tied down properly the front and rear ties are pointless. I have never tied the front and rear down, and I am yet to lose a boat. I have only transported Play and Comp Slalom boats .......................... not exactly heavy like a sea kayak, but I have had them stacked up high - six one time, but mostly four up.
Great video. I have a couple of questions that I hope you can answer. I have an older model RX300 with a factory install roof rack but there is a label on the bar that reads maximum weight capacity of 70 lbs, if a Hobie Compass weight 69 lbs without all the gears does this mean my roof rack can barely hold the kayak’s weight. Ideally, should the weight capacity of the roof rack be 10 + lbs more than than the kayak weight ? Lastly, for something as wide as the Hobie Compass do you recommend a jaylow or something else. Btw, I love the video you did on how to choose the right paddle. Thank you
While Yakima might have a Keylock system, i wouldn't put much faith in them. They are pretty sketchy wafer locks, anyone with a jiggler key could pop them in a second. No clue if you can re-core them with a different style lock.
Do you see any issues with attaching j-racks to the factory roof rack on a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser for hauling two kayaks? I just wanted your professional opinion on the strength and sturdiness of the factory racks. Thanks. Love your channel!
Wow, some people take things a bit too seriously. I found no misconception of what defines "factory racks". Kayak carriers or cradles are separate items, still using them on factory racks.
DO NOT put the sticky side of the bathmat down on the parking lot pavement!!! "Sticky" means it will pick up stones, sand, broken glass, nails, tacks, staples etc., that you would rather not have imprinted into the surface of your car when you drag a kayak along it. Put it in a clean bag until needed and keep it off the ground! Otherwise a helpful video except I have older Thule square bars that I bought for my old 09 Matrix and had to resort to ebay to buy Thule Crossroads 450 towers, the only solution to make the bars connect to the rails of my 2018 Rav4 XLE. Hopefully the towers are now winging their way from a reseller in Sweden, as no North American online retailer has them in stock and Thule has stopped making them.
The Malone rack works great for my Malibu Stealth 12 SOT fishing kayak. It's a little over 12 ft long, about 32 inch wide, 80 to 85 pounds without seat. Step stool is nice to have. Getting the straps over the kayak was a bit challenging. I throw the loose end over, reach under and put it thru the buckle then pull the buckle over the top. I've never used the bow line stabilizing strap. Everything seems stable enough. Would be a good addition. I use a bathmat across the back of my camper shell on my F150. That stinger would be great. I plan to make a similar attachment from pvc this Spring. I tried the daisy chain for extra strap but, at 60-70 mph they didn't fare well. I found I can put the loose ends in the windows of the camper shell. I have side windows that swing up giving access to the bed from the side.
you can go to your dealer and purchase the factory cross bars. It's usually an option, even though you have the side rails installed from the factory for the roof rack. I've had a few SUVs in my lifetime and they all had the roof "rack" and the cross bars from the factory, but the cross bars were shown on the factory window sticker as an option upgrade. But they are worth it. Seems like the manufacturers would just build it into the price of the roof rack, installed from the factory and be done with it!? LOL
Abba is just a pure delight! Thanks Dan for great info as usual.

Wow!!!
Would have loved to see how you load 2 kayaks with the single Yakima J low rack.
Fold down J Racks if you have a "GARAGE". Put trash can or large object in your garage bay before leaving it's a good reminder not to drive into the garage with kayaks on the roof.

Thank you for this. Super informative and solves my mystery of tying down a kayak.
I love the look of the 1st option but the 2nd option is probably my best bet since I'm only 5'3" and have a lifted hummer. Oh yeah and I love the step stool idea!

Very good information. I had never seen the extension on a kayak rack before.
Great video Dan. Appreciate you and your crew.
thanks so much for this video. I have been doing so much research and this answers all my questions.

@9:27 I'll take that Tip of the Trade for my dog in the back tankwell, thanks!
Going to put two kayaks on a Mazda 3 4 door. About 48 pounds each. Weight capacity is 165. Excited
Thanks for showing me other options, made a trip out to the Ozarks. Had to stop every hour because the j racks kept sliding around.
*Top Tip*
Always put a twist in the straps - it stops them vibrating at speed, and making that loud "farting" sound.
🤔... 😂
But, some people *like* that "farting sound" ... my kids, for example.
@@AndrewOvenden LOL grandkids too!!! ;)
Thanks for the tip and laughs lol
perfect video, thank you very much.

You should back up the webbing with a couple of overhand knots. I have seen the webbing slip
Yes I agree a knot after you pull down on the clamp.
Exactly what I needed thanks

Abba you're a kick. You both do a great job. I have a truck cap without rails, do you have any kayak hauling solutions?
Jillerbop id just add Yakima tracks and build up from there.

No real truth to that. Just have to be sure to support the hull.
Would the stinger be good for 21 nissan rogue with lifetime teton pro 116? Or would a j shape one work
on the Malone system is the straps not long enough to go around the cross bars 1st? plus it is safe and secure just using the wings of the rack?
Hi guys,
I can’t find on your website the rack.
Can i get more info please? Thanks
Thanks for making great reviews and how too’s. Wish you were local. I’m actually looking for an appropriate roof rack for a fishing kayak. I’ve seen some people use different load assist devices. What’s your opinion?
How did she do that daisy chain thing? Black magic?
007 bobby lol exactly. Now if she could just do it again...slowly...and like 200 times for us males to try and figure out how to replicate it.
Is either more safe to transport?
Does the cradle style cause any damage to kayak when tied down???
Would the bow line just be for high speed like freeway speeds but if you're just driving on back roads for 20 miles to get to the lake unnecessary?
Could you show for a FISHING 12 foot model ?
Any recommendations for a kayak and a stand-up paddleboard on a 13 Highlander with factory rack and crossbar?
i like your vids!
Where do you secure the bow and stern line if you don't have metal rings on the kayak?
Wakara101 every kayak will have a space to loop a strap. Usually the same place you carry it.
Can this be used for a surf/ longboard?
I have the same car, but no Yakima racks. Can you show us how to strap my kayak to the roof without racks?
Why did you not use the front tow hook instead of the hood to secure the kayak? The wind can bend the hood overtime.
Where can I buy all of this stuff?
I drive a 2008 ford escape, it has a roof top rack but the crossbars are at the front and back and non adjustable, do I need separate crossbars?
I have factory cross bars on a Toyota Prius Prime. I just bought the Yakima BowDown Rack and am having trouble securely fitting it. Should I swap my BowDown for a JayHook? Or do I need an adapter? Would some guidance from anyone who knows this stuff. Thanks, all!
Which straps did you use that have the rubber guard?
Thats awesome about the j rack lock to avoid someone stealing it!... I just bought the malone j rack and it doesnt have that :/ right? Thanks 🙏
Yakama items are usually very well engineered and have thoughtful "extras"....
I have a rav4 and unfortunately this approach wont work for heavier kayaks like hobies. The rear spoiler wont handle the weight so i load it from the side.
Very informative tutorial. Thanks.
I also use a few old couch cushions to rear load my boat by myself...on a mini van...it protects the top car
I know this is a really old video so I doubt this will be seen, but what do you do if you have an older car with a naked roof?
I am not the video poster but I have seen some racks that go between the door and door frame
Are they Malone stingers
I love to kayak but don't have a SUV I have a 4 series BMW Sedan what would you recommend. I am female and worried how to get it up on top of my car without scratching and what racks equipment I should purchase?
BMW dealer can get you one that works for your 4 Series. Also Thule makes one and also Carid carries them at this link ... www.carid.com/bmw-4-series-roof-racks/
Does one really have to tie down front and rear nose for a short trip down the road?
Thank you
It might be 70 lbs front 70 lbs aft, 140 lbs equal loads.
2011 Kia Soul. It doesn't have a roof rack. Any ideas? Can i get a roof rack?
While Yakima might have a Keylock system, i wouldn't put much faith in them. They are pretty sketchy wafer locks, anyone with a jiggler key could pop them in a second. No clue if you can re-core them with a different style lock.
Good to know!
Question????? I have a Chevy express. Any suggestions????
can you put longer expedition sea kayaks on a roof rack ?
Yes We transport our 16' kayaks on the same rack.
Do you see any issues with attaching j-racks to the factory roof rack on a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser for hauling two kayaks? I just wanted your professional opinion on the strength and sturdiness of the factory racks. Thanks. Love your channel!
Anchor 20 no problem. We rack that car often. I think it holds 150lbs but check your manual and use bow and stern lines.
Wow, some people take things a bit too seriously. I found no misconception of what defines "factory racks". Kayak carriers or cradles are separate items, still using them on factory racks.
I see jaylow $209 on Amazon and a Jayhook $149 Amazon. Which is this?
And what was the name of the second carrier?
Can u please tell me where I can get these same latch ons
Thank you. Excellent Video and very informational!
Can you use the seawing with sit on top fishing kayak vibe sea ghost 130
My 2017 only had side rails, what do I need ?
you can go to your dealer and purchase the factory cross bars. LOL
where can I find these bow and stern straps?
Found some at Walmart last week for $7
5'4 throwing that kayak around. LOL
My wife does that...at 5' 2" ;)
I have a grand caravan with factory rack and two bonafide rs117’s. What do you recommend?
Ricky Fennecken I’d do two sets of YAkima J Lo’s. They would fit nice and support your hull.
I’d go with two a j style rack. Those Bonafide aren’t to heavy to load up there.
