Thanks for this really helpful video, Elissa - it’s really clear and supportive. I went to a (rather unfriendly) ENT who said I have a tight larynx, over top of my vocal folds (a form of Muscle Tension Dysphonia.) He wanted me to see a speech therapist, but it’s not something I can afford at the moment. One of the things he mentioned the speech therapist would do is laryngeal massage. Is this sequence my best DIY alternative for now? Or are there any other known exercises that help improving things? Thanks!

And if you check out my whole playlist of warm-up exercises, there are other tension release practices you can do too. Hope things are improving!
This was really helpful! I've had a really demanding training period for a musical and have experienced some tightness in the root of my tongue after a long day of singing. This is helpful, thank you! I was recently diagnosed with muscle tension dysphonia. I am not able to see my physical therapist for another few weeks, unfortunately. I’d like to try this massage, but I’m having a hard time locating my hyoid bone. If I have a lot of tension, would it make sense that it’s harder to find? Any tips on how to find it when there is a lot of muscle tension? Nothing seems to want to move around in that area under the chin. Thank you!
Hi Meli, it's hard to find for many folks so don't feel bad. Do your best for now with the steps that are clear to you, and you can gently keep encouraging that tissue under your chin to move. Another good simple practice is to gently massage upward with your thumbs under your chin - those are your tongue root muscles. Hope things keep getting looser for you, and that your PT can help!
Hi Elissa, thanks so much for all your great videos. I have a question…… for a while I have been suffering with mouth breathing especially when I’m sleeping. I wake up with a parched throat and voice. Seems to be terrible blockage in my sinus areas. If I close my mouth and try and breathe through my nose, there is a real strong whistleling sound. Could you advise at all?? Thanks so much Sean. Ps keep up the great work
Hi Sean, so glad the videos are helpful! I'm not a total expert on what you're asking about. I have recently been experimenting with taping my mouth at night so I breathe through my nose. It's helpful! But obviously if you feel a blockage in your nasal passages that won't feel great for you. I'd recommend going to see an ENT about all this. You can also read the book "Breath" by James Nestor, which has great info. Hope that's helpful!
@@VoiceBodyConnection Thanks so much for your reply Elissa, I’ve been mouth taping for a while and also read the James Nestor book. Just within the last couple of weeks this seems to be paying off!! Your advice would be correct then !! My singing voice has returned, I’m so happy. Keep up the good work, all the best Sean x
I went to my ENT doctor today cause my voice is constantly horse . turns out I have nodules on either side of my throat and my acid reflex makes it worse this massage really helped. I’m all at work with it.
Hi just seen this video as my wife told me about larynx massage and maybe I should try it as I have had no voice for 2 years since COVID and COVID vaccine and previous to that I lost my voice for 5 months solid a number of years ago and saw ENT with camera and they showed nothing wrong and saw a speech therapist who suggested I see a shrink as maybe I didn't want my voice to come back at which point I walked out as I like talking even with a whisper of a voice. My daughter is 6 and non verbal with autism and she makes more noise than me
I’ll try these and hope they help my throat. I did some hard throat clearing in March and now when I swallow my throat makes a grinding noise. ENT and endoscopy didn’t show anything abnormal but I feel I did some damage to throat with the hard throat clearing. May end up seeing a speech language pathologist since I’m not finding answers through doctors.
I've never heard of this and don't suffer from hoarseness, but I do have an exercise I do that releases vocal strain that I do after a gig. I think this is a great video. Thanks.
over the pandemic I was loosing my voice due to trauma. And lack of interaction with people. Will these exercises help me at home with hoarseness and shallow speech?
Once you get the hang of things, the whole sequence shouldn't take more than three minutes. You don't need to overdo it! About ~30 seconds on each step is good :)
Thank you so much!! I sing in residencies for people who lost half of their autonomy or who lost it completely. It is 1 or 2 hours of show and it is demanding because I often sing without a mic(with my guitar). I will try those!! thankss!!! :D
Wow that's a great question Emilia. That's a tender spot, of course, but I think it's important for your voice too. I would say really gentle slow stretching and breathing.
Very very informative. I’m going to add this to my my neck and jaw massage routine. I have TMJ and haven’t sang in over 9 years because of it. Thanks for the video!
Another question a year later😁 is this something I should just be doing just once a day or can I do it at the beginning and end of the day, for example. Thank you!
So do you think that tmjd disorder and tight neck muscles can cause throat tension? My tension is so severe that I can't swallow at times or feel like choking. Also I suffer LPR so that's silent reflux

@@hanf71 That's a great report - yay!
I went to my ENT doctor today cause my voice is constantly horse . turns out I have nodules on either side of my throat and my acid reflex makes it worse this massage really helped. I’m all at work with it.
I'm so sorry you're dealing with that! Definitely keep following your doctors' guidance, but this can help too!
I’m curious what ended up happening with the nodules? Did you get surgery? Did they heal on their own… what helped
I have been diagnosed with globus and this helps alot
Thank you show much mem
Hi just seen this video as my wife told me about larynx massage and maybe I should try it as I have had no voice for 2 years since COVID and COVID vaccine and previous to that I lost my voice for 5 months solid a number of years ago and saw ENT with camera and they showed nothing wrong and saw a speech therapist who suggested I see a shrink as maybe I didn't want my voice to come back at which point I walked out as I like talking even with a whisper of a voice. My daughter is 6 and non verbal with autism and she makes more noise than me
Hi Blair I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through. Is the massage helping?
@@VoiceBodyConnection Hi I have not noticed any difference. Maybe it will just take some time for it to come back
@@blairtaggart5243 yes have some patience and feel free to reach out again if you need more support!
Thanks so much! The knot in my throat improved after following your directions!!!!!!!!
I'm so glad!
I’m hoping to use this for my spasmodic dysphonia.
I grind my teeth at night which leads to all sort of tension - your videos have been so helpful and I’m feeling more freedom - thanks you
I grind my teeth too Bairbre! Frustrating I know. So glad the videos are helpful 💕
@@VoiceBodyConnection Ah this makes sense as I feel your videos are targeting directly at me! Really appreciated
Thank you so much Elli mam ❤️
You're welcome!
I hear you on not getting answers yet Nikki! I hope these exercises help! And feel free to check out the other videos on my channel.
This is an incredible video!
So glad it's helpful!
I've never heard of this and don't suffer from hoarseness, but I do have an exercise I do that releases vocal strain that I do after a gig. I think this is a great video. Thanks.
So glad it's helpful Donna!
Thank you Elissa!
I felt a HUGE difference in my voice right after doing these 5 exercises. Would recommend to everyone!
ok i wont
these exercises are still great
@World Peace I"m sorry to hear that. Don't put your faith in me, as I'm only recommending this, not guaranteeing it will work.
Thank you Elissa, I was doing warm ups and all but tension in the throat keeps getting in the way. Quick results with this. Thank you so much!
Yay you're welcome!
Thanks for this! And great smile bye the way!
You're so welcome and thank you!
Wow this made my voice feel so nice thank you so much
You're so welcome!!
over the pandemic I was loosing my voice due to trauma. And lack of interaction with people. Will these exercises help me at home with hoarseness and shallow speech?
i have laryngitis currently and this helped make it not painful to swallow. at least for rn. idk when it’ll start hurting again if it does lol
Now u recover from laryngitis??
How long do you do massage or each step?
Once you get the hang of things, the whole sequence shouldn't take more than three minutes. You don't need to overdo it! About ~30 seconds on each step is good :)
Excellent videos please keep them coming!
Will do!

Your explanations are so clear and to the point..brilliant! Thank you so much
Thank you so much!! I sing in residencies for people who lost half of their autonomy or who lost it completely. It is 1 or 2 hours of show and it is demanding because I often sing without a mic(with my guitar). I will try those!! thankss!!! :D
Great exercise routine! Found it really helpful. Thank you.
Do you have any exercises that help to release muscle tension in the groins?
Wow that's a great question Emilia. That's a tender spot, of course, but I think it's important for your voice too. I would say really gentle slow stretching and breathing.
Thank you for your kind reply.
You are amazing and beautiful. Thank-you so much for this very helpful video! I will definitely be using it everyday.
Aw Joanna thank you! I'm so glad it's helpful to you
my gosh thank you so much for this you are honestly amazing
You lose ya voice quite a bit I'm guessing hehe
Very very informative. I’m going to add this to my my neck and jaw massage routine. I have TMJ and haven’t sang in over 9 years because of it. Thanks for the video!
Oh yes add to your routine! And start singing again!!!
Another question a year later😁 is this something I should just be doing just once a day or can I do it at the beginning and end of the day, for example. Thank you!
Twice a day is okay Madison!
@@VoiceBodyConnection thank you so much!
Hi I have a chronic hoarseness of voice.. Please suggest some treatment
Thank you so, so much! This really helped to ease the tension in my throat 💜
I'm so glad to hear that!
Helpful! Thanks.
Is this good for Globus sensation????
It might help! Is it working for you?
So do you think that tmjd disorder and tight neck muscles can cause throat tension? My tension is so severe that I can't swallow at times or feel like choking. Also I suffer LPR so that's silent reflux
It sounds like there's a lot of tightness in that region for you, NJ. Definitely worth trying this exercise - be really gentle.
thanks💙
My pleasure!
