I've worked corporate IT in a mac-heavy environment for over a decade. This overview is exactly correct - for the large majority of users, they would be issued this laptop and be thrilled with it. And then for a select power users - video editors and photo retouchers, they would get the MacBook Pro 14/16 or Studio, because they are heavy, heavy users requiring maximum CPU output. This is a fantastic laptop can't wait for mine to arrive.

I agree with your comments about the thermal throttling and I’ll add that if you do happen to edit a video or whatever once in a while and the machine does get hot, it’s not going to stop you from finishing your edit, it’ll just take a tiny bit longer to export or whatever. It’s not a big deal. Even after sustained load it can still perform 85% as good as it does when it’s cold.

Good info 👍🏻 I’m in UK and even though I’m no heavy user, I do consume social media, movies, youtube like a nutter so I’d still upgrade the Air, however with UK prices, I can get the 14” MacBook Pro with it’s incredible screen, speakers, etc for £1,735. So I’d have to be mad to spec up the Air to £1,679 (the extra is for 16Gb, 512 SSD and the charger plug 😠) when I can get the Pro with it’s amazing spec’s for ‘only’ £56 more. there seems to be two sides to the story on M2 MBA. some TH-camrs have pointed out performance issues, while others have said it wont affect the majority of users. The real question everyone should ask is this. Does the whole package do justice to the price tag this laptop has? While design has changed, the issues around slower SSD, and thermal issues are worth taking note of. I personally waited for almost a year for a new MBA with a new design but I dont feel the price tag is justified,. This would have been a perfect laptop if it was offered at the price of the M1 MBA.

    • @patricebutler321

Outside of these "benchmarks" though there is no thermal throttling or noticeably slower SSD, which is the whole point he's making. He had to perform the tests back to back 8 times before it throttled. Bottom line is most users that this machine is targeted at will never push their machines to that limit. If you are a user that needs more than 16gb ram in daily usage or a large hard drive then buy a MacBook Pro. It's honestly that simple.

I do that in a separate video, specifically comparing the M1 to M2. I know that there is some differing opinions among the AI staff but I think the $200 difference is worth it to get the M2 MacBook Air.
      - Better speakers
      - Better camera
      - MagSafe
      - Dedicated video engines
      - Higher memory capacity and bandwidth
      - Faster CPU and additional GPU cores
      - Thinner and lighter
      - Better keyboard
      - Bigger display
The M1 is just fine but I think that is a lot of new for $200.

@@AppleInsider fair points, although not sure if mentioning a separate video is fair when u are reviewing the product standalone here.
I only brought this MBA M1 vs M2 up because u do mention about upper tiers like MBP or Studio (i.e., if a user needs those demands, then go for those) -- this made me think: why not mention the lower tier M1 (when apple is still selling officially even) for those basic everyday things u so adamantly argued for with this MBA M2 use case. Seems only fair. (i.e., M1 more than capable to handle everyday tasks)
And yes officially $200 diff. But with the available discounts MBA realistically comes down to $850 for the base model in which case the $$ diff is at about $350.
Just want to make sure these points are made and have a broader understanding for the general consumers, like your viewers.

    • @battenburg6089
      @battenburg6089 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Storage is for things saved on your laptop/pc. So for example downloaded movies, programs, apps, games, files etc.
Memory is how much the laptop/pc can run at once. A lot of programs dont use a lot of memory, but games do. An example, if your laptop only has 8gb of memory, a game might need to use all of that to work smoothly. If you have other apps open while you play, it wont perform effectively. If you have less than the recommended memory, it will likely not work or cause problems

I’m surprised this video didn’t cover any of the honest major issues in this new M2 MBA: The 256GH single SSD NAND which affects most users, the midnight color problems and the overheating since this new one doesn’t come with a heat sink like the previous M1. I 'll let you know what I think: Apple charges more for less. Once again. The base model has a slower SSD and its thermals are worse than the previous model. If you want a machine that is not crippled by design you should pay $400 more and if your in Europe about 2000 euros.
But somehow you are enthusiastic about it, although measurements have shown that for certain tasks M1 is faster than the base model M2. Enough is enough with the apple shills all over youtube... Now I know you gonna delete my comment so go ahead.
Another big myth that you and others are using all the time is the construct "the average user". Well, if the average user doesn't need the performance, why would he/she buy this to begin with? Why not M1 or even a pad or a significantly cheaper Windows machine? Why is the average user always an excuse? Let's look at it the other way: Why should the average user spend 1200+ for a laptop only to write texts and browse on the internet? Are there not any cheaper and equally effective solutions for the average user? Stop apologising for apple's bullshit. It's a trillion dollar company. Unless you make money off of them, just think why should anyone cheering for their scammy prices.

What is most annoying is that any machine that is newer and comes with a Μ2 instead of M1 in its name is thought to be an upgrade. And Apple advertises it as an upgrade. Don't forget the base model starts at a significantly higher price than the previous generation. Now we learn SSD is slower and that the thermals (which is a huge thing for laptops and a big selling point of the apple silicon) are significantly worse. I'm sorry but once again, Apple tries to legally scam its customers. That's all. Isn't the first time, won't be the last.

The numbers do not lie. EVERY CPU throttles. If it was not for physics, CPUs could run without limits. Every chip is designed to heat to a maintainable, safe level. If you keep the CPU at that temperature, without any active cooling, the CPU will eventually have to lower clock speeds to keep the temperature in check.
You can see the results in the video. The CPU scores and frequency did not drop until quite the sustained performance. The MacBook Air is Apple’s most cost-effective machine and its users are not going to be performing 10 minute, 20 minute, 60 minute, 90 minute operations or renders that will cause the CPU to throttle.
The M2 MacBook Pro is only slightly more capable thanks to the active cooling and certainly not enough performance boost to warrant people upgrading to it. If you are referring to push people to the M1 Pro 14-inch MacBook Pro, that’s also ludicrous. The M1 MBA was more than powerful for most users and the M2 is demonstrably faster and more graphically capable. If anything, it will leave more people on the M1 Air rather than giving them reason to upgrade.

All said, I do use Geforcenow service and would also like to play World of Warcraft and if possible Final Fantasy 14, and that is about it.
Should I get a MacBook Air m2 24gb ram 512 storage with 10 core gpu (I just prefer maxing out my computers to avoid buyers’ remorse). A fully maxed out MacBook Pro 14 or 16 is also an option as I have saved a lot for this purchase, however, I am very hesitant on buying the 14 or 16 as a refresh might come out in a few months which will be hard to swallow. On the other hand, the m2 air has just been refreshed, which is a safer choice.
    P.s.
This is my main computer, and I don’t mind portability, and the most taxing thing I can possibly do to the computer is world of Warcraft, final fantasy 14, and geforcenow. I do not do any form of photo or video editing, not even as a hobby. Also, I do not like using windows devices as I find them overly complicated. I am perfectly okay with an iPad, but some of my friends tell me that geforcenow works better on a Mac.
