    The rule of thumb I've always heard is that you can leave any container perennial outside overwinter on the ground as long as the plant is rated at least 1 hardiness zone below your region's hardiness zone. I believe Asparagus is something like a zone 3 plant, so anyone living in say zone 4 or 5 wouldn't have to worry about the plant dying in the container over winter.

    My mother and dad, were just so smart into gardening. They always had plenty for neighbors and family. You are definitely the next best thing for knowledge. Thanks for your positivity and love of gardening, it makes it easy to enjoy learning more!

    I’ve had the same original sedum plant for 15 years.
    From that plant, I’ve made at least 10 other plants, which are all huge.
    I live in NYC & have never done anything to them over the winter. I just deadheaded them and left them outside.
    I feel like if it’s not broken I shouldn’t fix it but then again, sedum is incredibly hearty. It’s the plant that proved to me that I wasn’t necessarily going to kill every single plant I came in contact with. You can literally do/not do anything to them and it will still grow and grow and grow.
    This year, I have a few diff kinds of perennials that I want to make sure come back. Lol

    This may seem a bit silly, but if one is worried about insulating a pot over the winter, what about wrapping it with household insulation? The insulation factor (R factor) of insulation is many, many times that of straw or leaves etc. The major problem I see with this is that it would be pretty darn ugly, but perhaps the pots would be in areas that appearance would not be an issue. Also, if one uses insulation, the time to wrap a pot would be only a few minutes.
    This may be a stupid idea, but just wondering if this might work better than other solutions that were presented.

    I have several really large plants that I bring into the garage (they take up to much space in the house) over winter. Since the garage is attached to the house it is a tad warmer than outside, not much though and they do really well. We use a dolly to move them. When you reach 70, moving those big pots is more challenging. :)

      Do they need light if you put in the garage?

      @@annecarbonel588 No additional light, just the sunlight that pours into the garage most of the day.

    Good stuff Luke! It's actually getting cold where I am (Zone 10b) so this is actually a great help :).

    Do you continue to water them throughout the winter. And does it need light in the winter if it’s in the shed.

    Perennials in containers over winter is tricky business... Tightly packing the pots together seems to give them a little thermal mass... We leave the tops on our asparagus to help sorta break up snow pack from settling on them... Wind can really rob heat off them as well, so sheltering them some helps... And making sure you use a really well draining soil helps avoid winter rot... A final watering with epsom salts can help avoid solid freezing too... That's about all I got... LOL

    • @howtogardenwithhammerinhan2427
      @howtogardenwithhammerinhan2427 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bumble Bee Junction I agree with your assessment, sometimes I actually will use a little insulation around my pots for the cold parts of winter!!

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sounds like a plan... We have gone with raised boxes here on the homestead for most of reasons that make containers challenging, but we understand containers are the only option for some folks... And in that case, it's still better to grow something than nothing... For sure...

    • @howtogardenwithhammerinhan2427

      Bumble Bee Junction I also have raised beds and I use chopped up leaves to insulate around my spinach and also excess mulch that I have from spring that I put around my asparagus and spinach also! Give it a try! Remember, chop up them leaves! Also, mix in some chopped grass!

    I have 3 110 gallon containers outside. Everything that I have planted in it this fall has been established garlic that is. I used EZ Straw to mulch it. About 4 inches. I am planning on planting asparagus in the spring. I just went out and it is pretty much frozen, The top anyway. Do you think that these plants will make it through the winter here in Pennsylvani Zone 5-B?

  • @lepidlover0557
    @lepidlover0557 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've also read you can just trim the plant down, and cover the soil with a good level of mulch to help keep the temperature under control.
    I did this for my butterfly milkweed and they came right back up towards the beginning of spring.
    With the plant having sensitive roots, I thought it was good as dead, but I was wrong thankfully.

    Liked your video. Listen to all of your videos..informative and focused. My question is about overwintering strawberries. I have been told that you can keep them in an unseated cellar. My cellar is around 50 degrees. Do you think this would be a good idea or not?

    what about cold climates? I live in southern Ontario. We have lots of fields of asparagus and strawberries in the area so I know that field crops overwinter. My location is clay soil so if I want asparagus, pots may be best. Can I leave them outside in the pots, even though it gets well below freezing every winter for months.

    do you think i should repot my plants to larger container now? Or would it bring them out of dormancy? I have bought a few berry plants in september, and they were sold in very small containers, i thought i would repot them in spring, but now im worried a bit that may not survive winter... :-/ what do you think? I live in zone 9. thank you

    I'm not sure if I left my Callistemon Bottle Brush outside too late, since it was in the 35-40^o range when I brought it inside.
    The leaves are almost completely dried up but they are still attached and not totally crispy.
    Will it recover?
    I'm going to keep it until it looks totally dead, or if it doesn't start new growth in Spring I'll compost it.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for this! I overwinter in my shed. How should I take them out of dormancy? Do I treat them like when I harden off seedlings...brief times in dappled sun to gradually longer times for a week? Or can I simply pull them all out when no danger of frost and water them? Thanks for your help!

      I'm not the most educated so please dont take my advice as law but I believe you should slowly introduce them to the outside again because you could shock the plant, I'm overwintering my pepper plants and bringing them inside but my kale and mint is staying outside with a clear tarp over and around it

    thank you for the video. Was that an artichoke plant beside the pot while on the ground? What type is it, how do you get it to survive, and has it ever fruited? what zone are you in? I have planted artichokes three times. They will grow, die off in winter, and come back a few years but never fruited. I am going to try growing in pots. Do you have any advice?
