- One hundred years ago, Christmas was just as anticipated as it is now, by children and adults alike. Around Thanksgiving, the Atlanta Journal would ask for children to send in their letters for Santa Claus to not only be published in the paper but to be flown to Santa Claus at the North Pole! Rich’s didn’t have the Pink Pig yet, but they had sales galore to accommodate all levels of financial ability. Furs and finery for the richest of citizens to handkerchiefs and hosiery for everyday Atlantans to put under their trees. Refrigerators and radio sets were at the top of any wish list back then.
Reindeer Rest was home to Santa Claus and was located at the intersection of Gilmer and Cortland Streets, now the location of Hurt Park. It was an annual tradition for years for Santa to arrive there with his reindeer. It was open for school field trips and weekend visits with parents.
Merry Christmas from me to you!
