I get the Boss hate. They're affordable and your average joe can own them. I'm an average joe who has played through Boss pedals for 17 years now and they've always done right by me. I really have enjoyed using this pedal and it gives a great representation of the Marshall sound. I suppose if I had the disposable income I'd try the high priced ones. But I'm a family man with not a lot of bread and Boss pedals are a godsend for me.

Rock on, there are many times that great sounds have been achieved with simple pedals. This pedal produces some of the best harmonics and tone which has this British bite, while others 3 times more expensive fail. And since I've been there and done that, the only thing to trust is YOUR EARS. Sounds good for you ? then it is good for you and that's all.

I'm by no means a guy with a lot of disposable income, but the pedal world is not divided into boss pedals and expensive pedals. The beef with boss is that they're too consistent, sometimes sterile. And they alter your tone.
Electro-harmonix makes awesome pedals which are cheap and true bypass. MXR also makes decent and reasonably priced stompboxes.
You don't need to go Fulltone/Strymon/JHS/Suhr to achieve great tone. Also, no need to be contained in boss' walled garden. Open your mind, bro!

Danilo Almeida If you see the pedals Orince used live, you'll see mostly Boss. I believe there is an article in Tone Report that shows pictures of his setup and a diagram of the effects chain from guitar to amp. Edit---It's a Proguitarshop article; Andy wrote it.

So many of the greatest guitarists ever used Boss pedals heavily. I get it if you're not a fan of rock music. But rock fans have heard boss pedals thousands of times on all different types of albums, so there's a reason we love them. Affordable, yet even the pros use them. It's hard to name one of the all time greats of rock since the 80s who _haven't_ used a boss pedal in the recording studio or live.

I am an 80's hard rock/glam metal player, and I have been too long caught up in a quest to find the "holy grail" tone from those hot-rodded Marshall amps that all the big guys in the 80's used to play, since I can't afford a Marshall amp myself (for now). If you, reading this, are obssesed with that beautiful 80's crunch as I was, look no further. This pedal does it. How?, well that's because this is a pedal especially designed to emulate the Marshall sound(s). It models several Marshall configurations with it's "sound" knob. "Crunch" = Plexi character, low to mid gain distortion, "drive" = JCM800 character, mid to high gain distortion, and lastly "Ultra" = JCM 2000 or modded Marshall's distortion. Keep in mind that not all amps are good pedal plataforms, so I recommend you to use this pedal in front of the clean channel of your amp and think of it as another "amp channel", but in a box (pretty much Pete Thorn's words in his review for the ST-2). Trust me, I bought a lot of 80's related affordable accesories looking for the infamous "holy grail" sound. This pedal delivers it best. Sometime, things that we want are closer than we think. Rock on, my unanimous friend!

Been playing metal since '79 and the best pedal I have found to replica the jcm800 is the NUX plexi crunch pedal...amazing marshall tone for $50

    • @eze8024
      @eze8024 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I too want, but can't afford, a jcm800 or silver jubilee stack, so I ended up finding a 1988 Marshall Lead 12 and have been pretty stoked with it. Especially after putting in a Celestion greenback. Still might pick up this pedal too

    • @MrRFasters
      @MrRFasters 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@dagony7383Hmmm. Disagree. I did buy theNUX and the Marshall pedal itself. Both miss out on dynamics and depth in tone. And the the ST-2 delivers a gig worthy reliable Plexi, JCM 800 AND 2000 in one go. I gig it. Looking for Gary Moore and JoBo sounds. My Guitar teacher, a serious death metal head, gigs using true Marshalls, but always brings his ST-2 as a backup. Brilliant pedal. Best 200 bucks ever spend.

Its funny to hear people say Boss are affordable, I'm 51 and have been buying pedals for years. I earn a pretty good wage, but have only ever had 2nd hand Boss pedals, never a new one.
These boutique pedals that cost $500- $1000 bucks, who in their right mind is paying that when you can get Boss (or even Behringer) pedals that sound decent for much less.
Tbh the Boss Waza line of pedals and their X line are quite expensive in my opinion, quite aspirational for the hobbyist.

This pedal sounds fucking GREAT, no other pedal comes close to this amazing tone. Granted you don't have the same level of eq settings as some other pedals, but the actual distortion effect is so much better than literally anything else on the market, and it's CHEAP!

You are 100% right. I'm a blues player, i mostly use the overdrive signal and it's warm and sweet (playing with more bass and less treble). It's a really neutral distorition wich is good, you can get really annoyed with distortions with too much personnality. This one goes places.

  • @gordontubbs

Recently test drove one of these at a Guitar Center. Unlike every other video for this pedal that keeps the knobs at or around 12 o'clock (and never past 3 o'clock)... I went ahead and turned everything to max, and I was blown away. It sounded like a modern Marshall halfstack in every respect (think Van Halen's 1984 tone to Megadeth's Endgame tone and everything in between). Highly recommend this pedal to anyone who wants to add a de facto Marshall channel to their amp or use with a cabinet emulator (such as the ADA GCS-3) to direct-in record to route to PAs for gigs.

  • @davidwantsahug

I think this is one of the few new BOSS distortions/drives that actually sounds decent. Got a wide range plus the EQ really helps when changing pickups.

I can pretty much guarantee this pedal has the same basic circuit topology as dozens of 'boutique' pedals, differing only in the choice of component values. There simply aren't that many ways of generating distortion.
When a circuit is sold for $300 by a small manufacturer, it's great. When the same circuit is sold for $100 by Boss, it sucks. If you study circuit schematics, you might realize your ability to listen objectively is affected by knowing the price, but not the internals.

I know there's a lot of bad feelings toward Boss pedals because they are rather generic. I think Boss has been trying to change that of late but they'll never have the reputation of, say, Lovepedal or Wampler (to name two of many). But one of the holy grails of pedals is the ability to get a marshall stack tone out of an inexpensive Fender-like amp. This pedal does a fair representation. AMT (and others) are better. But you're looking at 2-3 times the cost for the boutique pedal too.

This is a great pedal but one thing the guys wont say in this video (but I will) is that if you buy this pedal and you have crappy cheap stock pickups this effect is not going to fully give you the stack sound that you are looking for so please change your pickups!!!!
I've tried this effect through Fender Strats and Gibson Les Pauls, SGs and Firebirds and a few PRS guitars. Since all of these come standard with high end pickups it really made these guitars sound fantastic but when played through a cheap $300 or less electric with subpar pickups it sounds rather amenic. So again I say change your pickups, you'll be glad you did.

For playing 70s-80s hard rock (GNR - Aerosmith etc.), BUT ALSO willing to find a sound close to 80s melodic hard rock (Danger Danger, Winger etc.), would you suggest Boss Power Stack ST-2 or AMT M2 to be used as a "preamp like" base for my tone? (I already have an MXR 77 Custom Badass Overdrive that I use trough a clean channel for rythm and as a booster when playing through the ovedrive channel of my MG30 Marshall. I also have some effect pedals necessary for the 80s poser sound).
    Thanks everyone!

Balistic Gunz I personally thin you're better off with the Marshall stack. I have this pedal and it sounds awesome. But I use it with a Fender Deluxe Reverb. You've already got the marshall sound with that stack.

Could it be? Boss made a good distortion?

Is it the pedal or laney, it think it sounds to dry, maybe with a little bit of reverb ...

My ONLY beef with Boss pedals - and I've used a ton of them over the years - the build quality doesn't hold up on the road. The case/switch set-up they use breaks. The AC jack shorts out. The knobs fall off. My 30+yr old MXR pedals have stood the test of time - still have them, still use them. OTOH I'd get a couple years of one-nighters out of a DS-1. You get what you pay for - BOSS is $100 for a reason. That doesn't make them "bad"

If Boss is known for anything I think it would be the ruggedness. I have a few pushing 25 years and they've always worked.

For the most part I agree with Yawyck, however I have a DS-1 on my board that I use just for quick dirt and at lower volumes it isnt too bad. Now having said that I would trade it for a Tube Screamer or a BB Preamp in a heartbeat. I also have a un modded Blues Driver that for lower gain OD is really my first choice (I primarliy play bluesy rock, jazz, some country-fried boogie type stuff but very little metal, for the metal guys I dont think Boss is the way to go IMHO)

Is this one of the pedals for the free pedal Friday or not, and how do you know when you win?

Hi, I would like to know if the Les Paul in the vid has been equipped with treble pass filters or is the clean up staying bright because of the pedal.

I don't get everyone's beef with this pedal. It sounds like it's supposed to and that's all I care about.

C'mon folks, this really doesn't sound bad, If I remember correctly, Marshall amps are very bright...
People are just biased against digital technology. If PGS demoed this, but in stead told us it was a boutique pedal they are demoing, nobody would be ranting that it sounds "sharp and flat". Hell, what does that even mean?

True! I would say boss makes some decent modulation effects, but if you want a marshall in a box tone, Boss simply do not work for me.
