Stingray is a British children's Supermarionation television series, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and produced by AP Films for ATV and ITC Entertainment between 1964 and 1965.
Its 39 half-hour episodes were originally screened on ITV in the United Kingdom and in syndication in Canada and the United States. The scriptwriters included the Andersons, Alan Fennell, and Dennis Spooner. Barry Gray composed the music, and Derek Meddings served as special effects director.
Stingray was the first Supermarionation production in which the marionette characters had interchangeable heads featuring a variety of expressions. It was also the first British television series to be filmed entirely in colour over its production run.
tingray, a highly sophisticated combat submarine built for speed and manoeuvrability, is the flag vessel of the World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASP), a security organisation based at Marineville in the year 2065.
It is capable of speeds of up to 600 knots (1,100 km/h), while advanced pressure compensators allow it to submerge to depths of over 36,000 feet (11,000 m), enabling cruising to the bottom of any part of any of the Earth's oceans. Marineville is located somewhere in California, on the West Coast of the United States. In the case of it being under attack, battle stations is sounded and all the buildings and vehicles are sent down on hydraulic jacks into the safety of underground bunkers, protected by enormous steel and concrete shutters.
The base lies 10 miles (16 km) inland, and Stingray is launched from "Pen 3" through a tunnel leading to the Pacific Ocean. The alerts "action stations", "launch stations", and "battle stations" are sounded by a rapid drum-beat (composed and recorded by series composer Barry Gray) that is played over Marineville's public address system.
"Anything can happen in the next half hour." It has been 55 years since I last heard that- I must have been six years old. Amazing to see it after all these years. And in color! And the "Maria" song. So many of us share this as a vivid early memory. The Andersons made magic.

I really enjoyed all the violence in these shows. Loads of missiles, explosions, bad guys getting blown to bits, puppets heavily sweating, drinking scotch and smoking. Simpler times.

Yes C1V1L WAR could not stop laughing at the above comments yes all true as above and it is amazing a kids TV programme in 1964! Explosions, sweating puppets, drinking scotch and smoking love it! All natural during simpler times. I am still around decades later and enjoying it in 2021.

Stingray was the coolest looking sub ever. I had one for the bath as a kid.... wish I still had it.
Anderson's use of music was a world away from other kids shows. Hugh productions with orchestras and catchy songs. A couple of them made it to the Top 40 radio playlist. Having Hank Marvin and the Shadows as part of the shows was pure genius.

AWESOME opening.........Gerry Anderson had a talent for creating opening sequences that would hook kids right away. This opening was almost an episode in itself. Loved the show as a kid.

As ex military when I hear those drums, it reminds me of a call to station. If you have ever served in the military you know what I mean, when the call goes up you move. Gerry must have served or knew ex mil. I at 60 still twinge when I hear those drums, I want to grab a weapon & cover my buds.Wow you & Sylvia created a Dynasty that is unforgettable.

One of my earliest memories was watching Stingray in 1964 aged 3.
When I was around 8-10 years old, used to watch it in a 14" B/W TV way back in 1979-81 in my hometown in Malaysia. This was our evening 5pm show with Tea and anything my mum prepared for teatime. Those were the best years of my life. No more Aqua Maria, no more the teatime, no more mum preparing for teatime and mum is no more .. Enjoy your childhood and parents, please let your children have a childhood memory. Childhood doesn't last forever ..

I was born in the 1950s and loved all of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson’s stuff. My dad, 97 when he died, still used to say: “anything can happen in the next half hour”. A great tribute to the Andersons!
Supermarionation is woven into the very fabric of my life, nothing but warm feelings any time I see any of the Gerry & Silvia shows.

I was born in 1990 but i used to watch all the re runs of Stingray and Captain scarlet as a kid. I used to absolutely love those shows, of course Thunderbirds as well, but watching clips of Stingray bring back so many memories.
I'm 68 years old and grew up with watching stringray and the ThunderBirds miss both of them
I have several albums of Stingray and Thunderbirds from my childhood living in England from '65 - '67. Marina is one of my favorites, but I collected all things Thunderbirds from ages 7 to 9. The music and talent of Barry Gray were exquisite. He captured the era beautifully. I would love to go back and live that time again.

It definitely stirred serious excitement in this impressionable former nine year old kid when the series started airing in my hometown Cleveland about 1966.
I defy anyone not to get excited by that opening titles music...... It's amazing.
I was always amused that a military's Red alert alarm was belly dancing bongo's! I actually performed the closing song in my singing act years later. I just changed the words slightly and people thought it was a real song
You need to watch this on a week day at about 5pm, the time i would have watched in the early 70's.
I bet we can all remember the theme tunes, yet wouldn't have a clue what was on tele yesterday.
Has the pleasure of visiting the APF studio in Slough on a few occasions. The live fish seem swimming in the underwater scenes where in a huge, thin tank that was only an inch or so between its sides. Everything behind it was done in dry conditions.
The next thing you'll be telling us is that it was made with puppets but who'd fall for that ?

I saw Stingray in 1965 & 1969 and finally when it was screened in 1976 I saw it in colour.

I’m proud that John Livesey Eccles aka Barry Gray came from my hometown. I grew up watching and listening to shows created by the Andersons with music by Barry. Stingray was one of my favourites. Black and White television in those days.

I loved this show as a kid and would rush home from school to watch it. I am told that I would sing Aqua Marina around the house; I had pretty good musical tastes even at six years old! And, you know, it still sounds good!

Barry Gray's music was superb and it was a huge part of the success of these 60s british puppet shows. The Thunderbirds march has a life of its own and it's on the top level of popular British march music. The best music associated with films and TV is so much more durable and evergreen than the films themselves.

Wildwood -- Yes indeed! As a kid when Stingray came out, I was besotted with things like Saturn V rockets, and Telstar bringing Mr. Kennedy live to our living room in London. (Yes, why did we always put the telly under the window where a fault in the high voltage circuits would set fire to the curtains? But I digress).
Stumbling upon Troy T. and friends fiftysomething years on, what stuns me here is the sheer oomph of the musicians! Wow, I'd love to be able to hear and SEE these guys performing. While not dissing the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's groundbreaking Doctor Who theme, I'm blown away by this performance on traditional instruments.
BTW: From about 1:00 -- Love the music's "Simon Templar meets the Pink Panther" feel!

I remember first watching this late night/early mornings on my mom's tv with the sound off so I wouldn't wake her up. I've been recently been watching it and couldn't believe the awesome opening music! So swinging!
Great opening and closing sequences and themes! Making Sam a paraplegic was a stroke of genius too.
I loved watching this when I was a kid. That theme song and the opening sequence was so exciting. I am surprised to recall how much it still gets me going!

I don't know if I imagined, or dreamt it, but I believe that when the BBC showed this in the UK, they had to over-dub the intro dialogue to "anything can happen, in the next 20 minutes", because of the lack of adverts (so the total running time was shorter). :) First time I've heard it in "stereo". Brilliant.
No, it was always " in the next half hour " and it was never on the BBC it was broadcast on ITV
This and the rest of the Gerry Anderson's series are a tribute to British ingenuity and the ability to make brilliant things on an absolute shoestring budget !
Obviously it was in black and white on television when I was a kid,{I'm 60 now} my elder brother had a painting set of stingray and to watch the colours come to show what it was like in colour was pure magic for me.
What memories! This was my favorite of these shows. I remember acting out episodes with friends in the playground of my elementary school. I haven’t seen anything of it since, nearly 55 years!

One of my earliest memories is of watching Stingray on a 17-inch Zenith television while playing with a wind-up toy train in Sioux Falls, SD. My other early memory is looking up the isle of a North Central Airlines DC-3 when my dad was transferred from Sioux Falls, SD to Lincoln, Nebraska. The flight was from Sioux Falls to Omaha.
That brought back some great memories! I loved the show when I was a kid. The Andersons' attention to detail was amazing.
can not describe how influential these shows were to kids back in the 60s, me included. So many kids went on to become engineers, astronauts, etc. Me I got a BS and MS degree in engineering and math. Was always curious how things worked. Was a captain in the Air Force. And my story was not unique
When the Sci-Fi Channel first aired in 1992, I recorded the episodes of Stingray and Captain Scarlet in the middle of the night, b/c those shows would aired 6:30am EST (and I'm in CA). I could always hear my VCR click on, and rewind back to the start of the recording so I could watch it while I ate breakfast and got ready for work. And I'm a teacher so sometimes I would take the recordings to school. My kids loved them!

I think the Stingray series came closest to being mini-movies. The quality of production was second to none, and the editing and music had obviously been done to high standards. Even the credits & titles looked expensive. Bl**dy gorgeous! Thanks to everyone at APF.

Aquara Marina is still a hauntingly beautiful song. Thank you for the upload. I used to watch this and Thunderbirds as a child. Fondest of memories. Very grateful. These are classics. And I could listen to Aqua Marina day after day. Wish I could go back in time.

@@_Too_Late To the best of my knowledge, he wasn't married. Marina and Atlanta were friendly rivals for his attention and affections, and supposedly, he couldn't make up his mind...just yet(lol). The theme over the end credits certainly seem to indicate that he decided in Marina's favor, though; I felt a little bit sorry for Atlanta, when she was looking at Troy's picture. Tugged at my heartstrings, although there were probably plenty of men in the WASPs who craved some attention from her. 💖😊

I'm 45 and heard it for the first time. I'm a sucker for those kind of tunes! I vaguely remember watching a puppet series back in 1975 in the military channel in Panama as a boy, but can't pinpoint which series it was. The thing is, when I saw this on Pluto TV it caught my attention completely and my mind sort of picked up on some reminisce from my childhood. I plan to watch a lot of these puppet series until I finish them all.

I watched these shows when I was in elementary school back then. The Aqua Marina song was hauntingly beautiful. Sometimes at school I would get a bit homesick for my mom and for some reason I would think of this song. To this day I still asscciate it with her. Lost her last year at the age of 91. First time I had heard this in years. Sometimes you tube is a very good thing.

loved Stingray grew up with it as well as Thunderbird's and Captain Scarlet. As a young kid how I wanted to be one of the Thunderbird the coolest I think was g TB1 but even as a small child was envious of Jeff Tracy because he was clearly had a thing going with secret agent Lady Penelope.So thank-you Gerry Anderson for making me fall in love with a damned puppet aged about 5 years old.

Gerry Anderson was the Walt Disney of the UK, back in the day. I watched Stingray as a kid. I often watched it at a friend's house. She had a color TV, I didn't. Amazing what they managed to do with puppets, models and water tanks, no CGI. It look a lot of creativity to pull this off. It still looks good after all these years. Later, I was a fan of the Anderson's other shows, UFO and Space 1999. The models of ships started looking fake though, especially in Space 1999. By now, American TV and movies had caught up with effects, and had put out Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. Audiences no longer had the same suspension of disbelief. Probably why Anderson and company quit. They couldn't compete any more.
Nothing to do with not being able to compete at all. His divorce and other issues had a lot to do with things, not like he suddenly gave up or anything. Take a look at his works after Space 1999 to see he did many other projects. Better than just guessing shit.

Love the Thunderbirds and xl5 but this one you and all the way back into the time machine for this one I totally forgot about Stingray I used to love to hear the theme song it was such a cool show to watch I haven't seen this since I was 7 it's just so weird to see it again...
As a child this show fascinated me , humored me and creeped me out all at the same time. Were they marionettes? Were they bobble heads? Animatronic? All three? I certainly appreciated the creativity...

I loved all of Anderson's creations. Decades later, I was astonished to learn he created so much in his garage! His creativity was unbelievable! He enriched my childhood.
