Everybody talk about double decker train, but the most important is that it’s a double decker high speed train! A very iconic and beautiful train
Still the fastest train in the world only the Japanese have a few lines that goes a few km/h above
Comment pouvais-je imaginer, en prenant le TGV duplex si souvent et sans y penser, que je réalisais le fantasme de tant de gens au vu des commentaires !
Oui, vas-y, fais nous fantasmer 😚
I took the TGV from Perpignan to Paris earlier in the summer. In Paris I did the two stop RER dash to Gare du Nord then got the Eurostar back to London. Total door-to-door journey time was slightly quicker than taking the plane. And much more relaxed.
A trick to know in France. There are alway some bakeries around train station where you can buy a decent sandwich with a soda and a nice pâtisserie for 7 or 8 euro. Much cheaper than on the train, where food is usually quite tasteless and incredibly expensive.
Rarely open round 5 in the morning though... ;)
You have been lucky to choose the early train that day, for the opening ceremony of the Olympics. The next ones were all delayed or cancelled because of a combined attack on TGV lines. No people injured, just material dammage, and a chaotic day.
It's not that we don't enjoy the views, it's that it's become mundane. This line is the most used line in France, and many people use it regularly ! I'm a Northerner but I still use the TGV every week in order to commute to Germany. At one point, you just don't care about the landscapes anymore.
Also, it was very early and us frogs value our sleep :)
@@Hepad_ haha that's fair enough! Could sometimes do with individual windows like on planes 😂
@@GLovesTrains I would say more of a personal blind...just put a guide rail at seat level.
Interesting. I didn't think that people use the tgv regularly. I thought that people use them to go on vacations or occasional business trips. But how do you use TGVs every weeks ? They are quite expensive. They cost hundreds of Europe.
@@vintagetriplex3728 There exists specific subscription plans for regular users who use the same line all the time. I don't remember the cost since it's a long time since I did though...
@@vintagetriplex3728 my company pays for it. I live in Lille and work the week in Mannheim, or sometimes Munich. That's a comfy 1h ride to Paris, 10 min walk from Gare du Nord to Gare de l'Est, and then a 3h15 ride to Mannheim (add 3h for Munich).
I was recently in Paris for the Olympics and also went on my first double decker train, it was so exciting having seen them plenty of times while travelling through Europe but never being on one before
My first double decker train was a comparatively slower Belgian IC train from Brussels to Luxembourg at the start of my recent Interrail trip. Quite a pleasant ride, but the TER double decker a la SNCF I rode across the border to Metz afterwards was even better. The following week, I got one of the new RRX Desiro HC double deckers between Köln/Bonn Airport and Düsseldorf in Germany, which make a nice sound. Also had a fair share of Dutch VIRM double deckers between Venlo and Amsterdam, which were kinda similar to the Belgian double deckers, but more colourful. I am still yet to ride a TGV Duplex though, so that's still on the bucket list.
Hi G., it's Les (even though I go under my middle names on TH-cam). I'm the fan you bumped into in Cardiff this morning. Thanks for spending the time to chat & I hope you got to chill today. x
Hi Les, I had a great day thanks! Hope you got across the road okay haha 😀
It was so cool to see the Rhône! I love a good bottle of Cote du Rhône. 😎 The French countryside was so refreshing!
Haha!
Loved your video, I'm french and I used to take the Lyon-Marseille train frequently and am now a frequent passenger of the Paris-Lyon line. Taking those trains always feels special and the views are always fantastic to look at!
This could be a new thing for you to ride on trains all over Europe. Possibly you could do the London to Paris to Barcelona route in one day as a challenge, for example.
Went on the double deck NS VIRM and DDZ trains in the Netherlands last year and I certainly found it fun being on a double deck train as opposed to the usual bus counterparts! 😊
I live in The Netherlands and I ride on the VIRM trains at least three times per week.
@@meltrain It was mostly the VIRM trains I rode on during my stay in the Netherlands last year 🙂 only managed one journey on a DDZ which was from Utrecht to Zwolle and that was a pretty ace journey!
Wow I've heard of double decker trains but I've never been on one, so it works like the bus then, that all the cool kids sit at the top deck 😊 worth it just for the views. That 1st class standard class pricing is surprising though if you wanted to eat something
Haha I always sit on the bottom of the buses
Great to see Lucy. Please don't give her any grief. lol
Wow! A double decker train! Now that's something we don't even have in the UK!
Great vlog, G! I enjoyed this!
Ye no room for them over here 😂thanks Reece!
The only double deck trains to run in Britain were two experimental 4DD (4 car Double Deck) units which ran mainly between London Charing Cross and Dartford between 1949 and 1971 in an attempt to find ways of alleviating overcrowding.
However, they had numerous flaws, it took ages for people to board and alight the upper deck, also accommodation in the upper deck was extremely cramped
Two double deck coaches survive in preservation but are both currently stored at a private site in Kent
@@Thornaby37 Thanks for sharing, I actually didn't know about that.
I guess it’s due to the tighter loading gauge of British trains.
It s crazy to see how private trainlines wrecked the UK rail system. Really put it 50years behind the rest of Europe just so that a few could earn a bit more... Sad to see.
honnestly, nice train, and in time for an OK price consdiering the distance and the speed.
Great vlog as always G, really appreciate yours and other trainspotters for getting me into this hobby
Cheers!
Little tip : once people have boarded in Avignon, if there are remaining free seats, there is no further stop, so you can seat anywhere you want and have a window.
Great video G, thanks for sharing, cheeky clip of Lucy sleeping 😂….
😂😂
awesome train that Double decker train looks amazing after watching this i wish we have double decker trains back here in the UK now anyway brilliant vlog
Thanks!
I was on a double deck DB S-Bahn from Berlin Hbf to Brandenburg airport that day.
There were trials of double decks in the UK but the loading gauge is too wee and they found the dwell times got longer because of more people but the same doors.
Glad you enjoyed your first double decker train. I’ve been on one between Belgium and the Netherlands, Switzerland, and on the free train network in Luxembourg:) I just wish our loading gauge was bigger in the uk!
Tres bien 👍
That double deck train looked very impressive.
They did try double deck trains in Britain many years ago (between 1949 and 1971) on a commuter route in south London, but they weren't a success
Had to laugh at the knicker song in French (especially with "Le Wigan" accent 😅
Oh did they.. and ye everything is with a wigan accent 😂
Thank you for making this nice video and showing the detail of the restaurant menu 😋😋😋
Never been on a double decker train in France but I have in the Netherlands and Germany. Great journey G!
Didn't know you been Germany!
@@GLovesTrains Back in 2016
I live in The Netherlands and I ride on a double decker train alsmost every day.
In a single week, my first Interrail trip got me from having ridden no double decker trains to four different variants in five different countries: Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Unfortunately, none of the trains I took in Switzerland were double decker, but I could've added that to the list if I took the slow train from Basel to Zürich or had time to ride the S-Bahn to different parts of Zürich.
Bless you G, you're so excited and I love seeing that smile. 😊
Thanks for the video G,definitely a great looking train and love the loo and grand seats, I would definitely go up top because of my OCD!!😎🚆🚆🚆🚆🇬🇧💚
Sparkling toilet 😂
I'm like you when I take train, i watch to the countryside through the widow , the view is free 😊
We are lucky to have those high speed trains in France
Bienvenue chez nous ❤
Awesome job G as always, just a heads up that most 1st class fares on the TGV do not include any onboard catering services in the price, just the extra seat comfort.
Thanks, wasn't too sure about that!
Love all your UK train vlogs gloves. Great to see you going somewhere different outside of UK. How about the Maglev or Shinkanzen some day??? Pricey, though I would love to do that someday.
Thanks for taking us along for the journey - I take it the TGV was to France as revolutionary as the InterCity 125 was to us upon introduction in the 70's. Very impressive, and the double-deck layout means that an awful lot of people can be shifted on one train. What was your verdict on the breakfast meal you had?
Very expensive for what it was 😂
@@GLovesTrains Oh dear, that's not so good. C'est terrible!
@@iana6713 Hot food like burger or such are ok. It's cheaper if you bought a first class. But it would still be 30-50% more expensive than what it's worth. You pay the fact that it's the only restaurant available to you.
@@ebenezer576 Captive market.
The best part in taking a TGV is watching the cows glide slowly by
The contrast between a high speed train and the traditional way of life is quite something
Traditional? 😂 Do you think japanese have a traditional way of life?
@@martinquessandier3282
The Japanese have a traditional way of life, you just don't know about it
I was talking about the French TGV, BTW
@@varoonnone7159 Do you think so?
@@martinquessandier3282
Are you serious ? Don't you know anything about traditional Japanese culture ? Never heard of Kyoto ?
@@varoonnone7159 Yes a lot. But remember that the Japanese live in modern times and Japan is not at all limited to a tourist postcard
Poor thing it s raining !!! Keep up yr high spirit
It is worth the small amount extra for 1st class just for more room and comfort on the longer journeys - the seats are 2+1 and recline electrically! - but you get no catering. On an early morning train I always go for the «formule petit dej » which gets me a coffee, a chocolate madeleine cake, an orange juice and a yoghurt, for just 7€10. Any other time and I buy a sandwich from Paul, a good sandwich shop on nearly every station including the Eurostar section of Gare du Nord. And I usually choose the lower deck. The view is about the same but it is much quieter as the walkway through the train (to and from the café-bar) is at the upper level while the lower level is closed at one end.
Stena Dutch Flyer for me tomorrow; overnight to Hoek van Holland then Rotterdam to Bordeaux via Paris on Friday but I booked too late and am in the upper deck😞for the Paris-Bordeaux leg.
Thanks for the info, and hope you're enjoying your trip!
depending on the date and time the "small extra" can be double the price. but yeah, when it's 10 to 20 € difference, it's always worth it.
Thank you for sharing G
Sunrise journeys make for the best scenery in my opinion, nice touch on the voiceover commentary for the route display too 😄
Cheers Steggs!
You were lucky to avoid the issues they had with the TGV network that day!
Also, I've only ever been on one double decker train. But it was 10 mins from Düsseldorf Airport to the city centre, and it was so packed I didn't get beyond the vestibule area! So I'm not counting that, lol!
Ye heard about them issues a couple hours after!
Doing that during daytime shows your this gorgeous country side of Provence, Haute Provence and Burgundy to start with.
Another nice train ride. You got that knicker song sorted now
Fantastic video well done you are so enthusiastic about what you are doing ✅✅👍👍
I thought I spoke and understood English well until I tried to understand what you said in this video.
What an accent!!!!
😂😂 its northern accent
I have done that route quite a few times for work. My favourite part is crossing the Rhone at Avignon and seeing the Palace of the Popes in the distance.
Bonjour G fantastic vlog I've never been on a double deck train we definitely need some of those here in the UK
do no railroads use them in the UK?
@@kh-ro5su no we don't have any
Bonjour! The bridges are too little for the big big trains 😂
Pro French tip: If you think you'll be seeing someone again soon (like your loyal viewers!), don't say "au revoir", say "à bientôt!"
I actually did this journey and was quite surprised that Marseille was more interesting than what people told me
Looked very quiet and comfy ride, you could easily fall asleep 😊
Great little adventure that! There was some old French dude behind you when you were singing, I think he was slightly amusee as they say over there 😂
104 steps at Marseilles St Charles. No free food in SNCF first class (at seat service - but you have to pay). If you can get first class for under €10 its worth it for the extra space for you (and luggage.
Thanks for the info!
I did the reverse of this in May and it was a very pleasant journey. I'm not totally convinced by double decker trains though, as getting off them can be time consuming, just became of the number of passengers versus the number of doors on each carriage
Bonjour G and thanks for another great vlog and loved your Tshirt
Bonjour!
Sweet accent and your french was so cute haha
Great vlog G. I’ve never ridden a double decker train but it sure does look awesome.
Thanks Sam!
1:43 It reminds me of some Las Vegas Hotels where they make inside feel like a small outdoor city😅 looks very cool
From Marseille to.Lyon the TGV Duplex does 200 mph (320 kmh). Between Lyon and Paris it does 186 mph (300 kmh). I rode in the top deck of a Duplex from Lille to.Nice ! It was very nice.....
Sadly in 1st Class there is NO complementary food. Just a 2+1 seat configuration.
I remember my first TGV ride back in the early 80s - 180 mph and not a ripple on my beer.!
Bonjour Mme Gloves. Have been on a double decker in Germany. Now, nearly every time I travel in a local German train I encounter a loony. Not kidding. Now there's a research topic.
Great video as usual G! I commend you on your attempt to speak French😀!
@@davejoey cheers! French with a Wigan accent 😂
@@GLovesTrains What do 'le ticket' and 'le bar' mean?
Had a very short first trip on one of these from Disneyland Paris to CDG airport a couple of weeks ago. Took 9 minutes, it still reached 170 mph and felt like you were hardly moving. Going to have to book a proper trip on one some day.
That was a very early start but worth it smooth and quite journey nice train and great blog thanks G 👍🚉🙂
Cheers!
Merci Beaucoup Mon ami G. Un tres bien vlog.
Thanks for the tip about 1st class. I'll remember that. 😊
Thanks, apparently there's no complementary food in first class 😂
@@GLovesTrains Sacre Blue.
That's bad news. I normally attempt to eat my own body weight in biscuits and crisps during any trip in 1st class here.
Double decker trains are also in the Netherlands as well good video as usual
looking great train ive done double deck trains in holland the usa and australia and did you know the uk had double deck trains in the 1960 and 70s keep up the great work my hobby is in safe hands
Awesome thanks!
Great vlog G. Cool train.
Thanks!
Nice vid and thanks for the tip, I will be avoiding seat 88 from now on 😄😄😄
Haha ye 😂
So it's not just me. Each time I traveled from somewhere to Paris before to go to Montpellier. It has been In May, June, July, august, September and October, and always the weather was rainy and even cold compared to where I was coming from. And then I find back good warm and sunny weather when arriving to Montpellier.
Long time ago I was living In Dijon and I don't remember that it was so cold and rainy all the time.
Hot before you got there, Wow looking good on a double decker, no fun not having Knickers hook lol, You must go First class next Paris trip, and thanks again for a great vlog g, the hoodie at the end of your Vlog made you look like the Model for Scottish widows bank, hope your well and take Care G
Lol thanks, hope you're doing well 😀
Double decker train, how swish !
Swish swash
I haven't travelled by train in France at all. If I go to Toulouse next year though, I might consider getting a TGV service from Paris to Toulouse. I'll see.
Both options, the classic line via Limoges as well as the faster route via Bordeaux, are worth it. The first is of course a little slower, but I love the classic Corail carriages, and you go through the outskirts of the Massif Central, a middle mountain range, which is beautiful (and frankly nicer than the rather dull flatter landscape towards Bordeaux), as well as some nice classic stations, including Limoges-Bénédictins, but the TGV gives you an opportunity to visit Bordeaux, lovely town as well, and after roughly Agen, you get the outskirts of the Pyrenees...
Great video, G.
You should come to The Netherlands and ride on our double decker trains as well.
Would love to 👍
Brilliant 👍 a double deck haha.. I count steps subconsciously telling myself not too, but still count em.. haha.. 😂 cheers
Thanks haha!
At least you have had a good time in Paris because of the Olympics. I have been to Paris before and I do remember going on the Eiffel Tower and I was so scared of heights but I managed it very well.
A good high speed cross country service, something the UK is lacking....!
That double decker train looks mint. I've seen double decker Amtrac trains in CA but I didn't realise they had 'em in France ... though they do have a larger loading gauge on the continent. One day you will have to switch it up to G goes freight hopping in Kingsman Cannion 😀 only joking ... freight hopping is a really dangerous thing to do ... and technically illegal.
FYI there are no complementary drinks or food in 1st class..just bigger seats
Many european trains are great fun. I have been on the Swiss double decker trains and they look very similar. I think we need a G Loves Trains does Switzerland. Drop a line to the Swiss tourist board :-)
we used to go from london to nice by train ... eurostar , then TGV down to nice. we used to go First clas for the reason you said .. Ive just booked to from wales to London . ... 72 for 1 ....i did get a deal and split ticketing but it still came to 179 pounds for 3 ... that's just under 2 hrs journey ... lucky if you get a seat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You won't get a complimentary breakfast in 1st on SNCF, unfortunately, not even a complimentary coffee or water like in Italy... Complimentary meals seem to be rather typical for Great Britain, and Great Britain alone. Which also explains why the difference was relatively small in price on the continent, of course.
@@barvdw recentky went to paris on eurstart first class .. had meal ... went to Marseille again first class ... had light lunch and coffee " free "
@@dgattenb on Eurostar, yes, but I'm surprised by your experience on the TGV Inouï to Marseille. Eurostar is its own company, even if SNCF is majority shareholder.
i guess you were lucky, as there has been a lot of issues on the others lines this day, yours have been saved from malicious acts.
show us first class now!
At the end it is Around 700 km in 3h18
Hi G another cracking vlog. You should go to Japan and have a go on the trains there. Amazing experience. 🚅
Thanks, maybe one day!
If it was for Olympic opening ceremony, you were right to take the first train. Because the rest of the day was a mess because some people decided to sabotage the high speed train lines.
9:37 for some reason if I shout something in a different language, I’m 10 times more willing to say it even if everyone around me speaks the language I don’t 😂
😂😂
TGV inOui, il more a premium offer Vs TGV OuiGO, which is more low cost.
Only recently began daily commuting by train here in France. This plague of the mobile worshipping brigade has almost completely taken over society now. Never mind the grand views swooping by of magnificent countryside and the world at large, almost every passenger is glued to their little rectangles and doesn't want the distraction of the real world.
I only do a short twenty-minute journey but still enjoy the views every day. The majority of trains now have window blinds shared by two rows of seats. I can understand closing them when the sun is beaming in permanently, but most people want them down all the time so they can obey their miniature oblongs. Worst thing is when I'm already in my seat and somebody comes and sits down in the row in front or behind and pulls the blind down without even asking.
Many carriages display a little sign suggesting mobiles should be on silent mode and if you want to speak you should head out to the areas between carriages and behind the sliding doors. This used to be respected and understood. Nobody cares any more, they watch things on their tablets with the sound blasting out.
A few services still use the old Corail (equivalent of InterCity) carriages. Some have compartments with a corridor down the side and little lamps on the tables, others are fitted with rows of old bench seats like big bouncy sofas, with dated orange curtains at the windows and low lighting. Those carriages are not so popular with device-addicted folk as they don't have power or USB sockets, so there's more empty seats and it feels spacious. I love travelling in those trains, but they were supposed to be scrapped ten years ago and are on an extended stay of execution.
European railways really splash out on the seats, don't they.
9.32 Looks like you made one person's day at least!
👍
Very good language 0:14
Tip : if you say I like CGT you'll get free tickets
Imagine living in a country with nice trains which don't require declaring bankruptcy afterwards.
Let's be honest, I would've a Vlogger doing their video near me in a 5 a.m train and not even trying to whisper, I would've been very unpleasant.
0:14 What did you do to the poor bloke?!
Do you work??What do you listen to on your headphones??And do you know with your vlogs youre documenting history???
a typical Paris-Marseille journey...Departure in the warm, sunny weather in Marseille, arrival in the rain in Paris . 😂
😂😂
Next step is TGV special trains for TH-camrs, with extras pretending to sleep in the next seat. And this after the multiple complaints that the company received from travelers who had to share their trip with noisy TH-camrs. The result will be the same: all train fans will be ecstatic about their first time on a high-speed train in the summer rain as if they had just discovered a new sexual position or toy that would introduce them to unsuspected pleasures. “I tried the double-decker three speeds all-in-one and strawberry lubricant, it was unforgettable.”
No complimentary food in TGV first class.
