because he IS distinguished, it's his career and he's blatantly good at it, the heckling never refers to his skill level just that they find his occupation boring. whereas music is an artistic skill, its reception is in the eyes of the beholder, so the reception of Phoebe's friends matters more here.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think Phoebe is so awful musician. Lisa Kudrow has a great voice and the little she learned playing guitar is enough to make the songs have a good harmony. The lyrics are bad,of course, but then it’s just for the humor can work (and it works very well).

I just finished binge watching Misfits of Science, which starred both Courtney Cox and Max Wright - I always wish Max Wright's character in Friends would have had more appearances.
