great video Joe but I thought it was worth mentioning that powering the camera via usb-c is just that and doesn't actually charge the battery while inside the camera. I think this might be a bit of a common misconception and a bit misleading by Nikon in their marketing for this camera.
Yes, I too thought that the battery was being charged when I connected a powerbank to the USB-C port. It simply prevented the battery from draining. To charge the battery via USB the camera has to be turned Off
Thanks, Joe. All this is a foreign language. I have difficulty following what people write and this is the only thing I have seen on TH-cam to help. The only thing before I buy a powerbank, however, is to ensure I can fit it to my rig, which is based around a Smallrig half cage. Thanks again.

Hi Joseph, great video. I have one question, so as I understand we can not shoot tethered (for example Capture 1) while we power the camera via usb-c. Or is it possible to do?
Hello Joseph, thanks for the great tips. I recently gotten a second hand z6 ii and i can't get it to charge via USB. When I connect a USB C cable, the light on the camera turns on and off for about 30s then turns off and the camera doesn't charge (being off). Im not sure if the option can be fixed if i take it to a fixer. Thanks
Thanks for the info. It Sucks that the camera can not be charged like a phone through the usb-c included, but that but I shouldn’t be surprised that Nikon isn’t going to pass up money making opportunities…
A photo, I found in a Google search, shows the EH-7P power adapter (which Nikon Claims will work to charge EN-EL15C batteries in the MB-N11 grip on my Z6 II) has a 5V 3.0A output. Several 5V 3.1A (Amperage is current drawn so more is just headroom and the MB-N11 should remain within its amperage draw range or result in slightly faster charge) wall warts are readily available and inexpensive in the USB-C output configuration. I have an Anker 20000mAh power pack that I bought to charge my phone or iPad while camping but it is USB-A and 5-6V at 3.0A output. The voltage is what concerns me since I am not sure if the MB-N11 circuitry can take the extra volt? However, it seems to me that any male USB-A to USB-C cable, also available online should work since it would not be solely limited to data like the cable that came with my Z6 II. Or did I miss something here? Also note that the EH-7P seems to be in very limited supply, most of which are “used” on eBay and Adorama has them back ordered with no receipt date posted. B+H doesn’t list it either. Does anyone out there know how much of an electrical fudge factor we actually have with our Nikon equipment?
On the Z9 is there something on the camera display that actually confirms that it's being charged by an external power source? I'm thinking like on a Macbook when you plug it into the mains a lightening bolt appears over the battery ico.
What I want to ask is this: Can I shoot uninterrupted video for 4 hours without experiencing battery drain problems when this power bank is connected to the Z30?
What is the max volts from a external power source requirements (v mount batteries or power bank) that is safe to use to power the z series (specifically the zfc) without frying the camera?
Look underneath the camera. The manufacturer logo used to state a range in volts. I believe all el-en 15 cameras are 7-9V limited. And flash ships were up to 12.5V even 13.5 but that was the early era to account for 8 1.5V lithium AAs.
@@alpaalpaalpa Yes. Option #2 works. It's a Dummy Battery powered by an AC/DC adapter with an appropriate DC voltage required by the Dummy EN-EL15 Battery.

Keep in mind that the USB-C is just the connector. Thunderbolt 3 (and 4) use the USB-C connector and the communication standards are backwards compatible with USB 3.x. You should be able to use a quality TB3 cable on TB3 ports as well as ports with USB-C connectors supporting USB 3.1 Gen 1, Gen 2 and USB 3.2 Gen 1, 2, 1x2 and 2x2. I myself am using a TB3 cable for power and data on chargers and for data connections and it works great.
Do you know what the minimum power output delivery on the PD port of USB-C power banks is to be able to use power delivery to power the camera? Would an 18 watt PD port work?
Considering the Nikon EH-7P Charging AC Adapter only outputs 5V@3A (15W) if that combo is listed on the battery, it should. As an example, I have the Anker PowerCore Slim 10000 PD and it claims to output 5V@3A, 9V@2A or 15V@1.2A (PD negotiates) and it works with the Z6 II to charge/power it just fine.
You certainly can power your camera with USB-A to USB-C, just make sure it's a data-sync type cable not just a charging cable. So you don't need usb-c to usb-c
You can not power your camera with usb-a - what you are doing is using the camera battery. You can slowly charge the battery, but it isn't enough while the camera is on. The difference is in voltage and amps. USB-a does not carry the proper amount of voltage or amps.
The only problem with usb charging is that it prevents tethering. The z8 has two usb ports that eliminates this limit. The batery grip also has a usb that can be used.
@@ShutterSpeak I have had two En-el15c replaced due to problems, one only flickered when put into the charger. The other drained when in the camera when camera was off.
It does work, but the usb-a port has to support QC 3.0, then it can deliver up to 12 volts. QC 3.0 negotiates the voltage with the camera and Will deliver the appropriate voltage, mostly 8 to 9 volts. Not many powerbanks support QC 3.0, Anker does not in the powercore 3. It just has PD on the usb-c port. Then there are some restrictions on usb-a with QC; if you make timelapses with longer intervals, the port shuts off to save energy because of no demand of power is detected during the interval. I don’t know whether usb-c PD has this issue.
Hey Joe, great, clear, helpful video. Can the Anker battery pack be used if I also have on the MB-N10 Battery Pack? Or is that redundant? Thanks so much.
That isn't covered by any Nikon documentation but I don't see why it would change anything. I would think you could still use an external battery pack.

Спасибо большое 👍
thank you!!!
You're welcome!
@@ShutterSpeak Anko power banks can output 6v 3amp through usb-a. I have maintained power shooting video on my Nikon Z6ii many times
The only problem with usb charging is that it prevents tethering. The z8 has two usb ports that eliminates this limit. The batery grip also has a usb that can be used.
Or you could use the EP-5B - amzn.to/3sDpkTt
I can't find this option in my Z50 camera. Can someone please help me with this 🙏
On my z6ii the USB power is grey out - this option is not available... Why/how?
See if Connect to PC is on
Unfortunately, the USB-C from the camera to the USB-C on power bank is not an option on the Z6.
That is correct and as stated in the video and description. The Z 6 does not have that functionality.
@@ShutterSpeak I wrote to Nikon and suggested that this be changed, if possible. It seems rather petty/silly that the capability isn't there.
I have a Z9. Why would Nikon want me to "Enable USB power delivery?"
Just so people know. usb-c QC power delivery can supply 5-9volts...
Z cameras charge on 9volts. That is why usb-A will not work
Tether tools has a good dummy battery as well
Thanks for watching - that's good to know.
Have you heard from any one about the En-El15c battery draining when camera is off? Or a problem with the En-El15c batteries.
I have but I believe that was fixed in firmware a while back.
@@ShutterSpeak I have had two En-el15c replaced due to problems, one only flickered when put into the charger. The other drained when in the camera when camera was off.
Why is it not on the z6 but on the z5? Why does nikon always do things like that
Agreed. I just discovered this problem!
Does It work in z50?
No - It is a different battery. Just the Z 5, Z 6II, or Z 7II, Z fc,
I have my Firmware updated to 3.40 on my Nikon Z6, but I don't have the Wrench Menu option of USB Power Delivery. So... dunno
It is not availab le on a Z 6. You would need a Z 6II for the USB power option.
z6 doesn t work with USB- C?
I heard the z6 doesn’t support USB c charging in camera
it only works with EN-EL15c batteries
what is the use of this when you cant have continious charching ? you have shut camera down .. no help for timelapses and astro.
Ok...but why can't it use the usb-a to usb-c cord? That doesn't make sense, considering I've used a phone charger/cable to run my camera
That type of cable does not carry the proper amount of voltage - thus it will not work.
I´m working with an power bank and USB-A Output, together with a cheap USB A-C cable from Ikea. It woks fine. (Z6 II) producing videos for hours...
Evalo slow ah da soluve... Kena funda
Why does it need the camera battery, if it's running off the power bank? Srsly? Nikon surely likes to fuck over their customers a lot!
