  • (July 2023) Camino Baztan Day 1: Bayonne to Espelette, 27km
    Lodging: Chambres d’hôtes Andy Le Sauce, 25 euros (includes breakfast)
    My first day on the Camino Baztan and it’s good to be back! This day’s stage was entirely in France; the food was excellent, my pack was heavy, my lodging was unique but mostly I was so happy to be walking again.
    A big thank you to all of my current patrons, your support continues to mean so much to me! And if you’re thinking about joining our group there… come on over! 😊

    I walked the Baztan towards the end of July this year. I absolutely loved it. And I started walking from the beach west of Bayonne after a lovely swim!

    The 4-cloved leaf as a Basque sign is called "Lauburu" (4 heads) which represents "earth, wind, water and fire". It is a typical Basque symbol which many Basques use as a necklace. You might also see "eguzkilore" or sunflower which is adorned on many houses to protect from evil spirits.

    Hi Nadine, thx for posting this...a couple of things, can I get my credencial in Bayonne?(I'm assuming cathedral) and I'm thinking of Baztan to start, Frances to Leon or Astorga, then bussing it to the Sanabres... I'm sort of hoping this will offer up a bit of everything...A relatively peaceful start, the social aspect and Meseta of the Frances, and avoiding the mayhem from Sarria into Santiago... It looks like you've done the lot and would welcome your view.. Thx, SJ

    • @NadineWalks
      @NadineWalks  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you should be able to get a credential in the cathedral- I’ve read that you can, though I already had one so didn’t have to pick it up at the start. I love your plan: a quiet start on the Baztan, the camaraderie of the Francés, and a less crowded finish. The Sanabres was great, but if you want to avoid taking a bus you could stay on the Francés until Ponferrada and then veer off onto the Camino de Invierno, which is another really great option! A beautiful route, enough albergues, and it’s becoming more popular in the last few years (which just means that you might see a handful of pilgrims, rather than none). Good luck with your planning!

    • @stevenjames9974
      @stevenjames9974 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm so glad I asked the question, that's an option I will certainly look into and tbh the thought of jumping on a bus and breaking stride didn't sit right.... Plus I get to do the descent to Molinaseca again, the Cruz de Ferro and visit the little family cafe in Ponferrada where I had the best coffee and pan de chocolate on the whole Frances😊... Thanks for the reply and happy walking 🙏

    Hi, another great video. Next week I am restarting my camino from St Quentin north east France. Started from Brussels, but had to stop for five weeks after stupidly injuring my leg jumping down from a gate wearing a too heavy pack. So now I have reduced things down to 8.5Kg excluding food and water. Maybe could cut more by leaving my umbrella behind, but people say that it’s good to take for shade and short showers. Will keep going till mid November, hopefully that will take me into Spain, but probably will not finish. Originally planned to do the Norte, but in November & October maybe the Francaise will be better. But if I need to come again to complete things next year, I will want to avoid the crowds- maybe March? You mentioned a heavy pack, was that many kg’s?

    • @NadineWalks
      @NadineWalks  ปีที่แล้ว

      This sounds like a great Camino!! (and now I will be extra careful to not jump down from a gate while wearing a pack- ouch! I’m so sorry that happened!) My pack was maybe 8 kilos? I don’t weigh it anymore, but it felt heavy (for me!)

    @pamelasotelo7307 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @NadineWalks
      @NadineWalks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm I don’t weigh my pack anymore, but maybe 18 or 20 pounds, if I include all the extra food I carried for this Camino?
