The word “decline” is doing some undue heavy lifting when talking about the fate of the anti-treaty IRA. The narrator neglects to mention that immediately after the negotiated “independence” of the south of Ireland (the terms of which included the partition of Ulster), the UK directly backed the collaborationist pro-treaty forces who favored partition (the Irish Free State) in a civil war against those still committed to the liberation of the whole nation. Their influence “declined” because the British government backed collaborators who facilitated their continued direct control over the north and meddling in Irish affairs in general even after the nominal “independence” of the south.

The sequencing of events is wrong here . The Provos were formed in December 1969 and they declared their intention to kill as many British soldiers as possible and make Northern Ireland ungovernable through a bombing campaign of the major cities . This at a time when relations with the Catholic Nationalists was reasonably good . Once the IRA started shooting and killing soldiers coupled with bombing and killing and maiming civilians, the army responded and this inevitably led to the deteriorating relationship with the Catholic Nationalists. It was the IRA who initiated the terrorist violence that led to so much misery in all communities. Then after 30 yrs if this nonsense they end their campaign on British Government terms by accepting an internal solution and the Principle of Consent , something they swore never to do . What a waste of lives .!!!
@JacktheFilmFanatic-vu1nk the plantations of Ulster? I'm pretty dalm sure the locals had their land stolen and were given to protestants juring that period.
Yes the land was stolen by the proclamation of King James. He tried to solve the Border problem of England and Scotland by promising Land in Ulster to those Scots and English Border Region families Land in the Ulster region of Ireland. Most of these Border people Protestant. The Church of Ireland is a branch of C for E. The important thing to remember is that with the establishment of the 6 Counties and influx of the Plantation persons, this created a majority of Protestants in what became Northern Ireland. Today the majority of voters support the Sinn Fein. Michelle O’Neill is the Leader of the party and both parties are working together, which is fantastic. The residents of Northern Ireland realise that they are much better off financially as part of the Uk. The Health and medical benefits, Pension etc would be gone of a United Ireland occurred.
