  • Want to expand your knowledge of mohair cinch making? In this video we explore the many types and methods of making mohair breast collars. This will introduce you to the idea of matching a breast collar to the cinch. For an average breast collar you’ll need 44’ of 8-ply plus enough 2-ply for whatever design you choose. Hardware includes a 3” O ring, two 2” dees or O rings and one 1” dee. Tugs are also needed to complete the project. See end of the video for a materials list.
    CORRECTION: The video says you need 10.5' for each side. You actually need 17' for each side piece. I don't know where I came up with that figure! To figure you need 11 x 14" plus 24" at each end. That equals 202" or 16.8'. Round that up to 17'. So....17 + 17 + 10 equals 44'.

    Thank you so much!! I've been looking for so long for a tutorial like this and I truly appreciate the time you put into it

    Well i am sad. This is my first attempt. I measured 3 times and cut 17ft. It didn't seem like i had much left over for the end weave. Sure enough, i barely have enough to make it across let alone move onto the next step. I measured my strands length between my rings and i am at 13.5inches.
    I dont know what i did wrong.

      I only have 11in left for the end weaving. I'm hoping I can tie extra 2ply onto these to make it work

      Hummmm.... if you cut 17' you should have had 2' at each end to weave back in. I measured between my rings and had 13 1/4" so we are close. Are you pulling your yarn pretty taut as you're stringing the warp? Since you only had about one foot you may be able to make it halfway across. I think I'd run those yarns as far as I could and then run the ends back in. Then add on your two ply and see if you can tie them in.
      Maybe I should make a video on how to do that as someone just said they did a cinch and ran out of yarn at the ends!

    Hi caroline
    How tight should the larkshead knot be and what about the tension on the panels for the breast collar
    Thanks

      As with all your weaving, the tension should be even. It's easier to work on if it's fairly tight but just remember to be consistent. The panels on the breast collar are like the cinch - tight is easier to weave on but don't strain yourself trying to over tighten it. I like to make the knots tight so they don't loosen up.

    Do you start with 100 ft of 8 ply for the breast collar? Do you have a standard breast collar horse sized pattern you go off of?

      There’s a materials list at the end of the video. There’s several TH-cam videos on sizing a breast collar to fit your horse. I just do the average size.

    Where do you get your mohair?

      The eight ply I get from Panhandle Leather. I get the two ply from UBraidIt.com as Panhandle only has undyed two ply. Hope that helps.

    How do you hid the ends on the roper style?

      About 9 minutes in I demonstrate how to hide the ends. You weave a few rows and then with the end, go back through the previous row or two.

    How much meters or
    feet do I need ?? Or how much you recommend me to buy… I just want to start trying to do a breast collar 🙏🏾 and thank you so much

      At the end of the video is a materials list. It looks like a few words were left off. You need two pieces 10.5’ long for the chest pieces and 10’ for the piece that goes to the cinch. So you need 31’ of the 8-ply to do a breast collar. Plus enough 2-ply for whatever design you choose.

      Is that measurement for an 11 strand… it doesn’t seem like enough of the woven distance is 14” long. Or am I missing something?

    • @carolinespurgeon6016
      @carolinespurgeon6016  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yvettetowrie7338 yes that’s for an 11 strand. You really aren’t using much as the pieces are so short.

    • @yvettetowrie7338
      @yvettetowrie7338 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carolinespurgeon6016 but if the woven section is 14”x 11 strands, that alone is more than 10.5 ft, and you need length to weave in the ends. I’m not sure how that can be enough mohair? Do you stretch it that much? Or is the 10.5 only the measurement for the lower center arm and not the sides?
