Wow this is mind blowing. So good for a live recording back then. I was 12 in 1996, I probably started listening in '97-'98. This music is at the center of my being ❤
@@johnzackarias11 Yeah lol it's pretty rough, and you can kind of understand why he struggled with vocal injuries later on. He strains himself so much, although it does sound very intense!
Look Davey Havoc is a phenomenal artist don’t get me wrong. But AFI’s first couple of albums literally sounded like every other punk band at the time. If I didn’t know any better I would never be able to be able to pin what band this is based on the vocals. He didn’t get his uniqueness until Black Sails in the Sunset.

Jesus, this is making me feel old. I saw them at 924 Gilman.St. in Berkeley during this era. Unforgettable energy at that gig. This really is a time warp. Wow.
I'm so bummed. I lived in Brentwood during my junior year back in 98/99. My friend used to go to Gilman all the time, and I never went with her. Totally could have seen them in their prime.
Was only 12 riding BMX and this album was the reason I met the same friends I have to this very day. Wild. Still riding, still jamming some of the songs ❤
Thanks for posting this man. Always liked their stuff from the 2000s. Was remembering this band this week and became curious of their older material and I stumbled upon your vid. Great footage and quality must’ve been quite the experience actually being there and living in that moment.
I’m not into their more recent work, but after seeing this I appreciate their desire to just want to do something different as time went on. At the same time they don’t neglect their early material as others may do once they assume their new identity. “They” just being Davey and Adam I suppose 😂
97.... I got heavily in to the band shortly after that.... and kicked myself ever since for missing this show. they wouldnt come back to Chicago until 2002 delayed by 911
I don't know how I missed this video. I watched the two song combo you posted a couple of years back. Now, seeing the setlist in the end (would love to see the rest if the set!) and Dave's blonde hair, I would guess this was some time around April 1997. I have a show from April 1st 1997 with a blonde Davey, and a very similar (if not exact same) setlist. That show was in Buffalo, NY, which is near Chicago of course. So maybe it was a date before. Geoff's last show with AFI was April 7 1997. Thanks for the upload!
@@xrsidex I found a flyer from a show I was at in Aug. 1996 at the Fireside that lists The Rejects, Erector Set and The 4-Squares as opening bands for AFI. The footage from this show looks familiar, I even vaguely remember the patter about Frank Sinatra. But memory is a funny thing, I could be confabulating. Do you remember who the opening bands for this show were? Also puzzling is that the bass player says the new album comes out in June 1986, as if it hadn't come out yet, and then the crowd laughs implying that maybe it had. So I dunno. The footage is fantastic whether or not this is the show I was at, thanks so much for it. I'd long forgotten who had played at the show I'd seen at the Fireside and this footage led me to flyer that helped me remember.
in my world, this was AFI's heyday. shows were in the $6-10 range, nobody knew who they were, raw punk shit, and you can get up close and listen to and feel the music with 'like-minded fans'. I've never seen them in Chicago, all shows I went to were all over the Bay Area, and last time I saw them was in '99 :(
The entire feeling of my youth embodied in one comment! I was at Fireside weekly. Multiple times a week. It was usually 5 bucks to get in. The place smelled like old bowling shoes and cigarettes, but it was home! This was one of the best shows I've ever seen to this day!
@@deannadale8287 For me I was The Red Room, vets hall (first floor and basement), palookaville. all 3 were/are in Santa Cruz, and lastly 924 Gilman. Those were the good old days. now I'm in my 40s and old haha.
By the way, there's a video of a later date at the fireside bowl where the guitarist falls and opens his head. There's also another full set filmen from the side of the stage. Did you record any of those?
This is a national treasure and should be archived for later generations.
It will be, kids… this is East Bay Hardcore
Fuck those later generations. The world is lost. All the punk and hc lyrics from the 80s and 90s have come true ;)

It’s amazing how good they were so early in their career. You’d swear they’d already been doing this a decade professionally
So tight. Second real album on Nitro, and their shows were incredible for such a young band
What a relic. Fortunate to have people in this world who recorded shows like this.
I love how you can hear how well he can sing even when he's screaming. What a gem this is
Davey sounds so good here, such a unique voice, young bands in the scene today lack unique vocalists like this.
If that is your opinion, I would say you probably haven't done your research

El mejor a fire inside , sin ninguna duda!! Cuanto extraño esta banda 😢 sonido perfecto para esos años
