It makes my silly heart warm and full knowing that there's the Blaqk Audio/Sisters tour happening after seeing how much Davey gushes over them in this.
Lover this interview. Gives you insight into Hunter and Adam. Usually AFI interviews are just everyone sitting there silently while Davey Havok takes 3 minutes to try and articulate a sentence as well as he can.
Jon That's why WIMB is awesome, because they just want the musicians to sit there and talk about their picks and not lead with questions only aimed at the singer.
AFI brought out some great horrorpunk records in the late 90s. I haven't kept up with them for a long time, but they still seem like a good bunch of dudes with a solid taste in music.
Since Im confined to my home due to Covid, Im playing a lot of guitar and re discovering music. AFI is one of these bands I used to listen to when I was 16 and just yesterday I returned to them to find that I still like them!
Love Sisters too. I actually met these guys, I worked a show they played in Albuquerque. Such great guys, totally cool and very nice. They killed it that night. ❤AFI
AFI to me by now are like great old friends I've never met. Had a big ol grin thru this whole sitdown and got a bunch of music to check out. Bcz if my homies like it ........
Really enjoyed seeing these picks from the guys; 3/4 of my favorite band. I had a feeling Adam's collection was mostly psychedelic and trippy rock stuff. That space song was cool, I will be looking further into that one. Hunter's record case was a great loophole in the series sequence, and I'm glad he mentioned Onyeabor. I expected a Sisters of Mercy record to pop up, but didn't think a picture disc would. Oh Dave! It would be interesting if he tried singing in his Andrew Eldritch impersonation voice XD
I love hearing about the influences/interests of bands I greatly adore. I actually bought that Rod Stewart album in Japan based on the cover, also their choices are very akin to my musical interests, so thank you so much for this.
not surprised these dudes have awesome taste in music one of the few bands out of the early '00s "emo scene" that i think were actually talented.i know they were doing punk in the '90s before they changed their sound that era of their music is also very solid.
We'll just forget the whole screamo bullshit they tried to pull. Black Sails forever. And don't get me wrong, I love screamo and still listen to a lot of that garbage to this day, but their take sucked.
I realize on the 16 years I’ve been listening to AFI that I have severely underestimated Adam because he just brought up my favorite Spiritualized album and everything I love about it.
Sisters of Mercy HAS to be criminally underrated because little known fact about goths is that they actually hate their own music so the best way to know how good a goth band is is by how many goths hate them.
@@automatwinslaytracks Andrew made it abundantly clear that the Sisters weren’t goth. I would say most bands from the era that fell under the goth umbrella resented the label. Peter Murphy, Robert Smith, Siouxsie, Jaz Coleman all rejected the notion they were goth . Even Rozz Williams worked the rest of his career to shed the goth attachment, and he’s about as goth as it gets. This sentiment trickled down to fans as well, so I’d say he does know what he’s talking about. Maybe you don’t??
@@matthews852 I was referring to "the best way to know how good a goth band is is by how many goths hate them." Sisters is in the holy trinity of bands beloved by goths
Can't agree enough on the Blue Cheer, Suicide, and A Tribe Called Quest selection. Do need to check out to check out the Nigerian artist they were talking about. He seems very interesting.
William Onyeabor had a bit of a revival in the last few years, and a greatly renewed interest in his work. It's a shame he passed away, but at least his work was given new life in the last years of his life. SUPER worth checking out in full (and I do mean in full).
Holy shit, I never knew about Blue Sheer, but Summertime Blues appears on '68 record "Two Part Viper", and I never knew it was a cover, such a rad song! Thanks AFI! And you should definitely bring Josh Scogin to Amoeba.
I can’t say I’m a fan but anyone that picks Bobby Hutcherson, Suicide, Blue Cheer and William Onyeabor is cool in my book. Oh yeah Sisters of Mercy slaps too
Fuuuck I never expected to see Blue Cheer on an AFI video. Especially considering AFI's "straight edge" attitude. Great choice Adam. Their second album's even better tho :)
Little disappointed Gray Matter wasn't mentioned at all. I swear I hear the influence on some of their earlier stuff, but maybe not... _Take It Back_ is one of my all time favorites. Classic.
Nick Cave did a piece that made the movie Until the End of the World. Sort of a dire detective do or die piece. Without that song the movie , well anyways. Love the vibraphone, Lionel Hampton.Back then you had Wes Montgomery ,Little Jimmy Scott, Sony Rollins .Most of that music I didn't understand until I listened to Thelonious Monk's Brilliant Corners. Since then,.... Blue Cheer yup. You can't forget Blood Rock. My Brother got me into Sisters of Mercy. Bout the same time my friend got me into Christian Death. My musical tastes have never been the same. Bolshoi's Sunday Morning , Gene Loves Jezebel ,.... kiss of life.,,, Got to see David Byrne when he did the rei momo tour. Great show. Got to meet him briefly the next day. It's kinda weird when you meet someone that you've admired for sometime, but very cool too . There just normal people who like coffee to. I just love this whole what's in your bag . Really good musicians sharing their musical likes.
Davey fangirling over the Sisters of Mercy is making my day.
I love Davey's brain. He is always so thoughtful, with beautiful descriptions. He seems like such a lovely human.
Do you know if the despair faction still exists
It makes my silly heart warm and full knowing that there's the Blaqk Audio/Sisters tour happening after seeing how much Davey gushes over them in this.

Jon That's why WIMB is awesome, because they just want the musicians to sit there and talk about their picks and not lead with questions only aimed at the singer.
i notice Davey tries deflecting questions to their bandmates a LOT. some interviewers get annoyed and direct Q's to Davey specifically.
Adam had some amazing picks!! And Davey knows his goth ;) No wonder they create such beautiful music
These guys seem like super cool dudes! And their picks were awesome
they had some good choices there, afi is one hell of a band, davey's got such a unique and great voice....cool episode...
AFI brought out some great horrorpunk records in the late 90s. I haven't kept up with them for a long time, but they still seem like a good bunch of dudes with a solid taste in music.
Geez horror punk? Micro category
Since Im confined to my home due to Covid, Im playing a lot of guitar and re discovering music. AFI is one of these bands I used to listen to when I was 16 and just yesterday I returned to them to find that I still like them!
++ for sisters of mercy and the choice of Walk Away. Favorite stuff!
Love Sisters too. I actually met these guys, I worked a show they played in Albuquerque. Such great guys, totally cool and very nice. They killed it that night. ❤AFI
Really loved seeing the albums that Robert De Niro picked
Thank you for another great episode of 'What's in My Bag'. Such an interesting and enjoyable show.
+CaliPoppyRocks thanks for watching!
AFI to me by now are like great old friends I've never met. Had a big ol grin thru this whole sitdown and got a bunch of music to check out. Bcz if my homies like it ........
great episode. Over the years I've been introduced to lots of bands from Davey especially. Would love to see one of these with Wes Eisold.
the fact that davey havok is a spandau ballet fan rocks my world
fauxmosmexual you can totally hear The Cure and The Smiths on Crash Love, not surprised at all that he is heavily influenced by that era of music
Doesn't matter if you make good music or not, if you pick Nick Cave I already like you.
Lucas Garibaldi Same.
Lucas Garibaldi same here. My all time favorite songwriter
Same
Birthday Party - Nick the Stripper
Totally. Same here.
Was not expecting that Suicide record! i got very happy seeing Davey pick it!
I love it when people have eclectic taste in music.
I love this so much. amoeba is where I bought my first AFI record ❤
Davey having the absolute best taste in music. 🥀

Whoah...Davey picked Suicide and Sisters of Mercy...That's rad
Hunter has the best taste AND is practical. Coincidentally, his bass lines are the best part of the band.
Not an AFI fan but they have some kick ass taste in music...pleasantly surprised.
I'd be interested in seeing Al Jourgensen, Marilyn Manson (I know you had Twiggy) or Trent Reznor on WIMB
zachdahmer yes to all of them.
zachdahmer definitely trent. I know he would go straight to David Lynch movies lol
The moment Adam pulled out Nick Cave's The Good Son, I knew this was going to be an awesome episode!
I love hearing about the influences/interests of bands I greatly adore. I actually bought that Rod Stewart album in Japan based on the cover, also their choices are very akin to my musical interests, so thank you so much for this.
They have great taste! Can't wait to see them in Pittsburgh in June!
Shout out to the Tribe. Glad that one made this video. One of the better hip hop albums ever, imo.
This was really nice; I enjoyed their picks and they seem like nice people.

Sisters of Mercy and Bobby Hutcherson! Good picks here.
Love the Sisters of Mercy album

You can tell they are floating in the space. What an album! God bless Jason Pierce.
Davey has an amazing voice! Wow
Would definitely be interested to have a peak in Jade's bag, too.
Yoooo I hear the Influence on Davey from Sisters of Mercy 😱
LOVE THEM.

This song about Andrew Eldritch dealing with being forgotten by so many people touches on that exact theme.
What!? All the goths I hung out with back in the late 80s/90s loved and still love The Sisters Of Mercy.
Why are you acting like you know shit when you absolutely don’t?

this was such an amazing episode. they all have good taste.
love them & their picks made me love them even more 💙
Saw Sisters Of Mercy in around 2004-05 @ Roseland Ballroom...Killing Gig
Can't agree enough on the Blue Cheer, Suicide, and A Tribe Called Quest selection. Do need to check out to check out the Nigerian artist they were talking about. He seems very interesting.
Living Abstraction he is great, checkout atomic bomb by him

These fellas are insane talented musicians... Love this Interview ! :)
im so fucking glad he picked shit he was interested in rather than knew. refreshing af!
and his picks were amazing and equally as refreshing
Wow, everything the guys picked is awesome!!! Eeeeeh! I love Spandau Ballet! Tony Hadley looked so hot in that video :D
Wow ... Prob my favourite "What's in my bag?!" So far

Best Spandau Ballet song EVER!!!
This is why AFI is such a talented band because of their influence
Thank you Davey for turning me on to Spandau Ballet

Sisters of Mercy, great album and a seriously underated band.
I love Adam's picks
i love them!!! but wow time has flown by.
*hear them introduce themselves and say, "we are AFI"*
my reaction: no your not, WHERE THE FREAK IS JADE?!?!
I said the same thing!
Afi hasnt been afi since geoof and mark left actually since all hallows ep loo
The best part of this is being able to hear from EACH member and not just one. If only Jade was included! :)
Fuuuck I never expected to see Blue Cheer on an AFI video. Especially considering AFI's "straight edge" attitude. Great choice Adam. Their second album's even better tho :)
Adam's not edge

Me and Davey have so much in common. Dark goth music for life
5:55 this moment makes me feel alive 😂💕
Yeh Sisters of Mercy, them and old Xymox really brings back memories
I think Davey Havok was wearing a snuggie with a zipper on it.
Aaron really knows about heavy metal origins: BLUE CHEER. Period, cheers, thanks
I thought it was Adam?
You ask Tony Iommi or the rest of Sabbath where Heavy Metal started, they'll say Blue Cheer.
Electrickoolaid A I think his middle name is aaron
Aaron... good job.
His name is Adam 😊
"before Sabbath there was Blue Cheer". Love it.
Nick Cave did a piece that made the movie Until the End of the World.

The sisters of mercy....great stuff.
That tribe record is awesome!!!
their music taste is great, they should make a album that sounds like all that
basically what they do, a little more on a nuance level than direct
I never liked this band. I didn't expect to be such a huge fan of their pics. I never would have guessed they like Bobby Hutcherson. Very cool
happenings is such a great record!
I liked hunter's picks the most. I figured as much about Davey picking post punk/goth.
Davey has excellent taste!
Adam Driver at 0:36
Steven that's kid congo powers
