Am thinking if he's referring to Sumatra squalls, whose winds I heard can reach 140km/h. Interestingly it seems that winds blow more regularly only when it rains, causing it to fall @ up to a 45° angle

I lived in Singapore for two years. Flannel button-up shirts are very comfortable and ideal for the weather. You can roll up the sleeves and loosen a couple of buttons on the few days it hits 33°C, and have them fully buttoned up when it drops to a frigid 27°C when it pours with rain.
Very informative. Never knew all that stuff when I visited Singapore in 2018 and where to the domes. Was merely marvelling at all the different plants, foliage and greenery amid the impressive waterfall. Thank you!
I loved my trip to Singapore and gardens by the bay in particular. We went right at the beginning of Covid in 2020 as a stop over to get to Sri Lanka for a wedding. Because of Covid it was so quiet and barely any lines and we were easily able to get around and see all the beautiful sights.

Wow that's an absolutely impressive design. They spared no expenses on it. I don't think they'll ever be able to recoup their costs so whoever fronted the money for this did it out of passion rather than profit. I guess it could drive tourism but I don't think it will be a major factor.

The fact it has garnered so much attention internationally means they have achieved their goal, i.e. to attract tourists. If you know anything about our (Singapore) government, is that money comes before anything else. It's a common theme here and while not necessarily wrong, it does hurt us in some areas socially.

@@wisteriang9491 I cannot remember. But it was like a coffee table big book. Hard cover. It has many pictures. I read it at Bedok Library. It is a highlighted book on display. Same level as the entrance and next to the lift.
@@wisteriang9491 Although I find it technical, It is not an engineering book. It doesn't give formulas. But it describes the challenges in the construction to make the project happened. For example , no two curve metal beams are of the same dimensions. Each one has to be individually crafted.
This is an amazing feat of engineering for sure, but there are questionable choices as to the environmental impact with this project. I talked to one of the curators of the Huntington Botanical Gardens a few months ago and they brought up the idea of limiting plant collections that need additional tech to survive. They used the cloud forest dome as a questionable example, being that it's so huge and houses cold growing plants in one of the hottest regions of the world. Just a little something to be aware of, though I still love the place.
@Hellequin Maskharat well from a technical standpoint, greenhouses are meant to keep heat in and need additional parts to house cool growing plants that would require regular maintenance. In addition, Singapore is a very humid country, making evaporative cooling not a good option, which means that you’re going to need a lot of energy to cool down the place compared to say a similar sized greenhouse in a less humid and cooler habitat. That extra energy usage and additional resources needed to maintain a greenhouse of that size in a less than ideal environment is very costly. I’ll double check with the curator about this but this is what I remember from my tour of the private greenhouses with him.
Yeah, Americans are always skeptical when it comes to seeing other countries’ success, especially Asian, non-Caucasian country, little do these “expert” knows the garden by the bay project has a special requirement by the Singapore government that the entire Garden by the bay include the SuperTrees and the two Domes cannot consume more energy than one commercial office building in the CBD area. Singapore is an actual first world country unlike United States, and their government is way more trust worthy with exceptional track record in sustainability and being environmental conscious, couldn’t say the same for United States

I remember taking a tour of those domes when I lived in Singapore. Apparently the botanists don't fully know how to keep the bigger trees in there alive, so they're basically on life support until they die, after which they'll be replaced. A bit sad really.

It was a great place to work at. I used to work there before going into the army and it was fun working there. Its cool sometimes to learn about the new flowers showcased for their seasonal events and plants showcase.

They should have included plants from Antarctica, such as the two land (no idea if a seagrass grows there) angiosperms, which would be the most impressive. That way they can say they have plants from every continent.

Yup. Singapore, apart from being hot and wet, has very mild weather really. Winds don’t get that strong and no typhoons.

@@capuchinosofia4771 I think it's partly due to the fact that they were transplanted there, instead of just growing naturally.
I wonder if they got the seeds and just dropped them near the trees and just let them grow. Maybe even some companion plants too 🤔

Those big mega flowers things actually gather solar energy, which is primarily powers the machinary in the domes and around the garden.
